I am looking to learn how to do Photo shop but not willing to pay the full price. In otherwords is there a way to find an older discounted version or a program that is very similar that will allow me to learn photoshop editing and use?
I am not interested in hacks or anything like that I would like a fully functioning program that is legit.

    Hi, reapr --

Here's a question for you, first: Does it HAVE to be PhotoShop, or would free alternatives do? They're pretty full-featured, and most often easier to use!

Ever heard of Gimp, for example? It's open-source (read "free"!) software, and very good -- "raster"-based like PhotoShop (at least, as I understand PhotoShop to be). There's also lots of free tutorials (video and written) that can be found with a quick G-search on the web.

In addition, check this page out: 10 Free Web-based Alternatives to Photoshop

Maybe not the answer you were originally looking for, but then again...?

    Hope this helps --

      Thanks for your response.

Yes I have heard of GIMP but I tried it last 2 years ago.

What I need is something close enough to photo shop as to be able to transpose those abilities and skills to use. Can Gimp do that?

      • There a photoshop like program out there called Paint.net. Not as powerful as photoshop but it is based on layers. You can find it at Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing. It is fairly user friendly and uses a lot of the same short cut keys as photoshop.

I have actually just completed my first e-guide based around this software. . If you think Paint.net will work for you and would like to be one of the first to review my e-guide send me a private message with your e-mail address.

        Hi --

I'm not a true PhotoShop expert, and so I don't want to mislead you with my belief that they're "similar enough" for a lot of purposes...

I've just started learning Gimp recently -- it was recommended by a fellow Warrior here (during site-flipping training, he mentioned to "learn PhotoShop or Gimp"...). I'm pleasantly surprised by all you can do with it, and from what I've seen of / read of / heard about PhotoShop and others' experiences with it the two are pretty close. But obviously, PhotoShop and its hefty price tag will be at least a little more full-featured.

Anyway -- I can direct you to some sample training videos or books if you'd like to make a more informed decision -- PM me an email address if you're interested?

      Reapr,

Adobe also sell Fireworks which has a number of the same features for about half the price of PhotoShop. The latest version CS4 also lets you use a number of the older PhotoShop filters that you can find online. That's what I use and I picked it up, along with Dreamweaver in one of their web design packages.

Another option is to pick up an older legit version of PhotoShop (any of the CS versions) and then pay the upgrade fee ($200 vs. $700) to get the latest version of PhotoShop CS4.

      Hope that helps,

      Mike

I too like GIMP but just like anything it takes a little time to learn. Youtube offers some video help with it.

I guess I have been using real Photo Shop for too long. I downloaded a trial version of Photo Shop Elements and was completely lost.
That is why I like Paint.net, it works very similar to Photo Shop CS and it is free. Granted I already own Photo shop and prefer to work in that but for someone just starting out give Paint.net a try.
In my e-guide I give step-by-step photograph illustrated instructions on using Paint.net to crop photos as well as knock out the background. making great product pictures sure helps you in selling products online.
Plus the experience you get with Paint.net can directly apply to photoshop. So when you do finally shell out the cash for it you will not be completely lost.

look on amazon sometimes you'll find software there with license codes under the "used starting from...." section. Or use Elements and don't pay as much. I actually just sold a copy of elements on amazon or else I could help more, sorry.
