I'm still stuck in the manual submission stage...(positively archaic, I know ) but I really haven't come across something that takes the bulk of manual submission out of it.
Is it just me, or aren't you tired by the time you're done inputting your Title, Summary, Article Body and Keywords into the software then creating tons of accounts to all the different directories?
I might as well do it directly; instead of using "automation software".
I won't call any names of what I've tried so far, but up to now, I've yet to be impressed.

I have used a few Article submitters and my favorite is Mass Article Control.

I have never used any software for article submission. Like a lot of things, I think it takes a lot of experience to know the frequency and individual requirements of each article directory. I had a freelancer work for me on about 10 - 15 contracted projects, and she was very specific about the frequency, and some of the more picky sites gave the best results - so it paid to actually take note of what they were looking for in a submission. There's no point in submitting 150 articles when only 10 will get put on in any decent time. If you look like spam - it's pointless. If you look like a straight up advert - it's pointless. You will get listed on the lesser quality sites, but for true SEO worth, you have to tick every box and ensure you meet the criteria that puts you above the rest. Become an 'expert' in the article site's eyes etc.

I agree that there is no substitute in most cases for manual submission. The sites I freelanced out were submitted to 5000+ sites and the article was written for $15. The quality of the work was astounding for the money. It pays to shop around - and if you find someone trustworthy - stick to them like glue & treat them well!

Does Mass Article Control still only submit to ten directories? Seems a bit slim...
I tried Jetsubmitter for a while. It seems like it would be a really slick piece of software, but it's unpolished. It kept sending me back and forth between two different login-pages and there were minor errors here and there.

I have used article submitter and that really works well but still you need to focus on manual submission as you have full control on your submission and can easily make changes if required while submitting.
