It depends on the type of site you are trying to build.
Dreamweaver and Wordpress are the two I would recommend the most but again, it depends on what your needs are.

I wouldn't really rely on advice from techs at BestBuy regarding websites. They might know hardware but, with all due respect, websites are not their primary business.

There any number of options to get a website up and running. Like most responders, here it depends upon what you want to do? Are you looking to promote a product or service? Start a club or membership group? Post some information? A blog, or a free website creator are 2 very easy ways to get started. I've seen complete newbies use Weebly and get up and running quickly and inexpensively. WordPress or other blog software is another very simple way to get started right away. Traditional "old school" developers and designers will move you towards DreamWeaver or other types but that requires more knowledge on your part of html, and ftp and lots of other acronyms. For the new person, focus on the content and what you are trying to accomplish and you can worry about the design as you go and learn more. With WordPress for example there are lots of good-looking basic templates you can use to put up a nice looking blog/website, thus you can focus on the content as providing value to your readers.

        Hope that helps....

          Hi all,

True story. Not Best B but close enough.

I was in an Office Depot and I happened to overhear their computer tech with a customer.

Customer: So what's the difference between the 4 core and the 2 core Intel?

Tech: Well the 4 core has twice as many cores so it's essentially twice as fast.

I had a nice talk with the store manager about processors and numbers of cores.

I wouldn't even believe Best B about the hardware side. Check everything.

          Steve

There are a couple of different types of Wordpress but generally speaking, it doesn't run on your local computer, it is web based. You install it on your web hosting account and you do all of your formatting and content updates through your web browser.

Wordpress.org is free but you have to have a hosting provider.
Any host company that uses c-panel has wordpress available so you dont even need to download it to your computer you can install it directly on the server. It is very easy to do and it is user friendly.

I recommend using good old Notebook and some HTML.
There are numerous different options with respect to Web Design applications. If you are just beginning web design and would like some type of a drag-and-drop application, then you may like Adobe Dreamweaver. It is commonly used by beginner programmers/web designers due to it's simply, easy to use interface. It is, though, not free.
If you would like a free and/or open source alternative you have many options, such as NVU, which is a similar drag-and-drop web designer. If you would like a CMS (Content Management System) that essentially is a pre-built series of files that allows you to simply post content and have the site run itself, then you may want something similar to Joomla.
A search for WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editors on Google will give you numerous options.

      • Dreamweaver if you have money and NVU if you don't.
      • Joomla is also really good creator of CMS (Content Management System); and it's free and easy to use.
      • If you want web development software that's free and easy to use even for beginners, you can try Serif WebPlus SE. It has free web page templates, and management tools for creating forms, links, palettes, page navigation elements, and more. It also has a drag and drop feature so you can easily be as creative as you want with the layout.
      Hope it helps....

WYSIWYG is only good solution, if you don't care about SEO. If you would like to build a SEO optimized site, then forget WYSIWYG, because it produces crap HTML code, and search engine spiders don't like crap HTML.

If you use Wordpress, you only have to learn the basic HTML elements and their semantic meanings, it is easy.

Wordpress offers a good balance between power and flexibility. If you want to really jumpstart your sites and SEO, the Thesis theme is awesome. There is a modest charge for it but it is well worthwhile, especially if you are going to build a number of sites or, perhaps, get into the site building business!

I tried a number of the free options out there.

I found that Kompozer and others were a struggle. I got reasonable results with Trellian, but the wysiwyg was driving me nuts! Not perfect to say the least.

I was pulling my hair out until I discovered Xara Web Designer, I was amazed.

For $49 you can't beat it. The learning curve is almost non-existent and the wysiwyg appears to be flawless so far.

One word of caution, if you plan to import existing html pages you're out of luck. Xara is not an html editor. When you design pages it uses it's own format and then converts to html when you publish.

From what the validators tell me, Xara produces very clean html and ftp is integrated. I'm new at this and can't believe how easy they make it.

I highly recommend Xara. Best 49 bucks I've ever spent.

    Find it at xara.com/us/

Wordpress, in addition to having a backend that you can learn relatively easily, has built in RSS, which means every time you create a new page or post, it gets sent to "ping servers" that spread the word to the search engines about your new content.

Wordpress itself has come a long way and themes are now available for just about everything. You can build sales pages, review sites, membership sites, ecommerce sites and just about any type of site you want with Wordpress much easier and more quickly than HTML. Also with Wordpress if you decide you want a makeover, it doesn't require recoding the entire site as it does with HTML.

I love Wordpress because of the numerous free and paid plugins that allow you to easily add additional functionality without installing scripts that are normally required with HTML.

Flash sites cannot be indexed by search engines. The engines can't read the code. So, unless you don't care about search engine traffic and are depending upon an entirely different form of traffic, you really don't want to create a flash site. Having a portion of a page in flash is OK, but I still tend to avoid it. Flash videos are fine but make sure you put enough text and keywords on your pages that the engines know what the page is about.

There are couple of really good Wordpress training programs online as well. I suggest you start with one of those. I also subscribe to a Wordpress Tip of the Day site that's very helpful too.

    Hello,
If you are a noob, I recommend using XSitePro, it gives you all you need.
If you want a more "professional" software try DreamWeaver by Adobe (Macromedia).

OR of course, you can rely on good old Microsoft Word You can save anything you make in Word as HTML.

    Good luck

I use Wordpress for a lot of my sites because its so easy to create especially if you're using something like fantastico within your hosting account. Also very easy to maintain and customize it with widgets and plugins, especially for SEO purposes.

But like others have said Dreamweaver is also great. If you're looking to really learn that software, I'd definitely recommend looking at some of the Lynda training material. Just do a Google Search. That's how I learned.

      Cheers.
