  • NOD32 all the way, very good protection, and very easy on the system resources :-)

    We use the following:

    Anti-Virus:

    http://www.eset.co.uk/

    Anti-Malware:

    Malwarebytes.org

    Anti-Spyware:

    The home of Spybot-S&D!

    Anti....Crap :-)

    CCleaner - Home

  • Avast seems to work just fine. Only had one problem with it ever. That was when they made a mistake to their upload.

Norton is a dog... resource hog. They sell to the unknowing in my opinion.

PC World reviews Anti Virus Software about once per year, perhaps you can give them a look. I've been happy with Avast so I haven't looked in a very long time.

I also like SuperAntiSpyWare. I use it with Avast.

    • I second the notion that Norton is a resource hog. My subscription is about up, and I'm moving away to something else. I had Panda before Norton, and it was good, but if you let your subscription run out it pops up a reminder every 5 minutes. I didn't have my credit card with me when that happened, and that reminder interfering with my work every 5 minutes caused them to lose me as a customer.

  • Spyware Doctor With Antivirus is pretty good for my PC :-)

    • I'd steer clear from Norton, even though I haven't used them lately, my experience with them is they tend to get into everything on your computer and use up a lot of resources. There are some good ones out there, but my personal favourites are: Ad-Aware by Lavasoft: It's an Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus and Anti-Root Kit Software. AVG Anti-Virus: Includes Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Link Scanner, Anti-Rootkit, E-mail Scanner, Web Shield and Resident Shield. Both of those work well together and are very light on system resources, I quite happy with their level of protection and prevention. These both have a free version which work well, except they lack the level of live protection, I'd definitely recommend investing in a full version of each. A third piece of software that I use for keeping my PC running smoothly is called System Mechanic. It's an all in one package for keeping your PC running in top shape, I highly recommend it. I hope these help, Cheers, Connor

    The price is also great.

  • I give a BIG recommendation to Avast. It's free, but it is GOOD! I have run it on every PC I have had (and many friends that I have recommended it to) and have NEVER had a problem or attack of any kind.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • The Great thing about Spyware Doctor is the License which
allows use on 3 different Computer.
  • Norton & mcafee are resource hogs I use Avira AntiVir
but have used Kaspersky on one computer and was ok until it missed a virus
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • AVG has a decent free version... just google "Free AVG"
  • i was actually looking for the best free version of anti virus softwares but iv only had problems downloading almost everyone you guys have mentioned.

i dont know why this is but i really need one now and right now.

pls what else should i do.i am in a tight shoe string budget.

    • I use the free version of AVG on all my computers.

Also, for spyware removal, a combination of super anti spyware -
      Free version

      Malwarebytes anti malware:
      Free version

I used to use Lavasoft Ad-aware - also free, but it failed me when i needed it.
And I also used to use spybot search and destroy, but it also didn't work when I needed it.

    • I also recommend Bitdefender 2010.

I've had them 2 years. Had to restall
on a new computer. Couldn't figure it
      out.

One email and was up and running in 30
      minutes.
  • These are the anti-virus and protection that I've been using for many years

    Lavasoft Ad-Aware
    AVG Anti-Virus
    Spybot
    Ccleaner
    SuperAntiSpyware

Norton, Avast and Mcafee were very heavy on resources for windows xp.

They all are FREE some have upgrades to pro.
  • Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I am looking into Nod32 & kaspersky both of which seem to offer the protection levels I need.
  • Just want to put a vote up for NOD32. I've never once had a virus since I started using it. I've converted my parents, my brother and my girlfriend to using it as well. I've heard good things as well about kapersky but I'm very happy with nod
  • I use Norton, never had a problem that I know of. What is meant by its a resource Hog?
  • I use AVG (the free version) together with the free Zone Alarm firewall.
  • Bitdefender without a single doubt. Been with them now for 4 years and never had any problems and you get a licence for 3 computers.
  • I was using ESET until just today when it missed a bad virus that I guess has been on my computer for a very long time.

The only thing that seems to have caught it was Avira so I will probably switch. It runs well with everything else too.

    I've also tried Trend-micro and it's slow so I don't recommend it.
  • Avast - anti-virus
    Malwarebytes - anti malware
Spy bot S&D - anti spyware
    Eusing - registry cleaner
CCleaner - junk files cleaner (and reg cleaner)
    Revo Uninstaller - Uninstaller

All free and will keep your pc in tip top condition.
  • I use avast and it's super as a free antivirus. It even beats a couple of other paid av's out there. Check out this site for a drill through of comparisons on the top antiviruses. Oh and this is not your average comparison, they know what they're talking about and don't have referral links at all in their site, so you know that they're honest in their tests :-

  • avira for anti virus and malware bytes it works just fine for me.
    • [1] reply
    • I should say NOD (it's made in Slovakia)
but I prefer AVG or AVAST both have free versions.

      Marian
  • I have used Norton and AVG and I must agree with quite a few of the above posts that AVG is the better (overall) of the two, and, as mentioned above, its free version is good
    • [1] reply
    • Like many of the above posters, I've had Norton for a number of years, but it really started bogging my computer down until I couldn't work with it because it became so slow. Also tried MacAfee, but some viruses got into that after awhile. Tried AVG but wasn't happy with it's effectiveness either.

Now we've been on ESET's Smart Security for over a year(same old computer-1.1 Gig Celeron, as well as our new laptop) and it runs fast with ESET and we've avoided any major viruses. Plus we love that it tells you that it's updated itself regularly, but we don't have to do anything! It does all the work behind the scenes and doesn't hold any of my work up. It ain't cheap, but it's the best(see Consumer Reports mag late 2009-sorry, don't remember which issue exactly, anyway it was rated #1 there..)
  • Eset Nod32 Antivirus is a great desktop security solution, complete with effective protection and advanced features. Antivirus from Eset Nod32 is certainly easy to install and implement. The software is easy to use and very secure. Setting up manual scans and scheduling specific scans is straightforward, or you can simply let Eset work in the background and take care of itself (and your computer) automatically.
  • AVG. I found Norton too slow. Also, there has been a lot of occasions when AVG has picked up viruses that Norton completely missed. Has happened the other way but is far less common.
  • you can continue with Norton or you can go for avast antivirus
    • [1] reply
    • I'd never use a "Suite" like Norton or Mcafee again. They use so much resources on my system.

I've broken to 2 sources as it is cheaper than buying a suite and I've found them less user intensive

Avast for all my anti-virus requirements
      and
Counter-Spy for all my spyware protection
  • I love Avast and Maleware Bytes. First I remove everything I can with Maleware Bytes. I then finish it off with a boot scan from Avast. This seems to do the trick for me every time.
  • Wow! I thought this thread would be all talk about - its brand new, completely free, and McAfee tried to stop them bringing it out due to it having potential to cost them millions.

It has also had a lot of positive reviews - finding more trojans and viruses than other programs, and running faster scans without slowing your computer down - I would definitely recommend it

  • i recommend Norton Why? i have tried a lot of antivirus software before including all the free ones trials like AVG, Mcphee, Avast etc.. they become viruses on your computer and start to malfunction making it difficult for you to uninstall.
    • [1] reply
    • just remember

if you unsubscribe and remove Norton from your computer you wont FULLY remove all their programs from your computer unless you re-boot your computer.

      Its a pain!!!
  • Avast couldnt be beaten with a big stick
  • I recommend you Avg and ESET Nod32 because of their wide range of features.
  • I'll add my support to the list for AVG free.
    • [3] replies
    • I suggest Avg paid, covers it all with multiple layers of protection and includes a firewall with it also.

Tried Norton, Kapersky, McCafee, but love my AVG!

    • I've been using Free AVG for years. Also using the Pro version on some of my client's machines.

    • I vote for Norton, Comcast just changed from Mcafee to Norton . My computer runs faster and is just better. Norton doesn't have as many files to download. It updates its spyware daily if necessary. It is more efficient than McAfee. A lot of users like avast because it is free. My daughters use it and swear by it... But they recently changed to Mcafee.

      Just my 02. worth.

    • I concur with lochsloyca.

The AVG licensed suite is great. They have really amped up their antivirus campaigns.

Free version is available but the licensed version brings a lot more to the table.

    • Go for quick heal antivirus plus it is good for removing any kind of malware and it has updates at no cost.

  • I like ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, but Avg free has been perfectly good in the past also.
  • Recommend Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security 2010.
  • I have been using AVG FREE for a few years, gotta to say its better than some of the anti - virus software that i paid for.

  • Hehe....I see nobody mentioned any of the products made by Ascentive. I accidentally ordered some of their software on a whim (fine, I was a little drunk) and they all worked to crapfection. Tried to get my money back and there was no way to get in touch with them. Had to call the credit card company, blah blah blah blah blah, yes, don't use anything by Ascentive.
  • I would rate Kaspersky as the best but after recent false positives with Google Adsense I've switched to NORTON.
  • I've been using avast for years. I love it.

    • Years ago, used Norton. A flat-out pain in the back porch.

Then I switched to AVG free. Great package...and still good. But then came an upgrade, and by monitoring my system resources, I could see that it was eating up more than it had before.

Currently on Avast...and happy. Uses hardly any resources and catches nearly all the bad guys.

For real hardcore pests, I use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. And for routine cleanups, I use CCleaner and AdvancedSystemCare.

If Avast ever goes south or lets me down, I'll look into NOD32, Kaspersky, or BitDefender.

Software isn't like marriage. You can easily get a "divorce," and even practice polygamy.
  • Graham,

I have been using ZoneAlarms for years and rate them very high. Have never had any problems...good service and great protection.

    Regards,
    Lawrence
  • I use AVG FRee antivirus combined with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware.

    • Kaspersky has my vote

Just installed on my XP where I have had Norton 360 for a year, then went to AVG paid version (6 months) and AVG caught and fixed the 2 viruses and 3 trojans that Norton 360 missed.

When I installed Kaspersky, it caught and fixed 4 trojans and 3 viruses that AVG (paid version) had missed.

On my Vista 64 I have been quite happy with the paid version of Avast and when I installed the Kaspersky on it, 2 trojans and 6 viruses were caught and fixed.

I purchased a 3 license, brand new Internet Security 2010 Kaspersky from ebay for $30 but it may cost closer to $60 to renew next year, but it will be worth it with these results.

really? Norton? they were bottom of the totem pole for years and put out pretty crappy software.. their new version any better?

I've been super stoked with AntiVir and AVG
  • Hi

I'm also looking for a new Security Package since installing
Kaspersky I/S 2010.. Previous releases no problem but I
would not recommend the 2010 version it's a real CPU
gobbler. Updates, which happen frequently, just take over
and hog till they are done, resource monitor regularly shows
    high cpu usage.

However never had any virus/malware problems.

Thanks for the advice on alternative products looking at
    Nod 32 now.

I'm even considering going for a Mac.

    • As I said earlier in the thread ESET NOD32 has a very low footprint and is worth a try.

The product to watch out for over the next 18 months is Avira. They've recently had $100million invested into the company.
  • Comodo Internet Security. 100% free
  • Norton 360 bogged my system down.

Comodo Internet Security almost drove me insane with false positives and blocking trusted applications.

Made the switch to Kaspersky Internet Security about 4 months ago and all is well.
  • kaspersky antivirus & internet security all the way
  • I use Kaspersky Internet Security for over a year now.
Powerful, regularly updated (almost everyday) and light.
  • What do you all think of Panda? I had Avast, but suspected a problem, that Avast didn't picked up. Uninstalled it, installed Panda 2010. Panda picked up a worm and virus.
  • I had been using Norton in the year 2002, then switched to BitDefender because of huge memory (system resource comsumed by Norton). I was happy with BitDefender but once it failed to detect and protect from a simple virus. Then I started using ESET Smart Security and was stick to it for the last 2 years. Same thing happened, unable to protect from a known but common virus.

Then again, started Norton reading the rave reviews about its consuming less memory. Now I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010, and seems to be stick with it for long time to come. It's really a fresh and newer than the old huge-memory consuming Norton.

    thanks and hope it helps.

    • I use:
      Avira - Free
      Malwarebytes - Paid

I used ComboFix (free) to find problems that nothing else could and had been on my machine for a long time, including one on my D drive.
  • I am considering migrating to Linux for my business computer , running a few windows specific software on my gaming rig if need be(use sandboxie )

I consider myself very savy when it comes to computer security having worked for many years in IT security (clearswift , centennial software now owned by Front Range) and now involved in Governance Risk and Compliance (Thomson Reuters)
If you thought auditors were dull, have a chat with an IT auditor some time to get some real horror stories!

It is clear from reading the above post that many of you have experienced dramatic failures in their security (learn to use a layered approach)
I myself , I am starting to give up, it's not a week that I do not come across some cross script vulnerabilities of zero day exploit where there is very little or nothing I could do if I fell prey to it.

Anyway for those who will keep using window, here is what I use

    -Avast
    -sandboxie
    -malewarebytes
    -adaware
    -firewall
    -ccleaner

Anyone already using Linux for their IM business?

    • Avast Free is very good. But I've been using Prevx 3.0 for the last few weeks, because it found some viruses that several other AV's missed. So far so good...
  • Norton is a reliable software. I used it before but currently I'm using AVG 8. Even if it's just a trial version, it still keeps my computer working find and free from malware even if I watch videos all the time online.

    • Having found some anti virus software "clogs up the works" and slows my computer down, I use Avast and have had no problems at all.

I once had a virus beat Norton and cause havoc whilst Mcaffee was like pouring treacle into my computer!

      Ray
  • Kaspersky has the best scanning engine and the best virus detection rates.
  • Kaspersky is the best, but if you need a good free version, then I'd suggest AVG
  • Kaspersky is the best you are going to get. Updated on an hourly basis (compared to most that do daily) and they have the best response time out of all the companies out there. Typically under 2 hours to find new threats, most companies are 6-48 hours. In fact many hackers use Kaspersky as a test to see if their rootkit and malware packages are usable.
  • ESET NOD 32 is my best paid antivirus. Before ESET, I tried several others such as Norton & Avira but was never 100% protected, viruses still managed to get into my sytem. For a free version, I would also recommend AVG.
    • [1] reply
    • I have used AVGfree for several years now nd have never had a problem with viruses. AVG is also not a resource hog like some other antivirus programs. I have had to use Malwarebyte's software twice over the last 2 years for removing spyware which AVGfree is not so good at detecting. However, I understand that the paid version of AVG is better in this respect.
  • I'm surprised AVG isn't getting mentioned more. It's cheap and even has a free version
    • [1] reply
    • Avast. By far the best. Even the free version is outstanding (you have to reinstall every 2 months to keep it free). of all the different programs out there my experience is that avast puts the least drain on your computer resources. I could never go back to Norton, McAffe, etc.
