Good Karma Machine clone

Although I like Frank Kern's Good Karma Machine it doesn't have all the features I'm looking for so I started to create my own version of his program. I'm not going to use any of the original code due to the "unknown license" so I'll have to create it from scratch and I think I've implemented about 30% of the code already.

Should work on every server supporting PHP 5 and MySQL (no PHP 4 support as its no longer maintained).

I'd like to get your input on which features you'd like to see in there so I could implement them.

I'm actually planning to release the version for free and maybe offer a very limited amount of PLR and source code licenses later, but currently I'm just looking for some features you've been looking for in the GKM.

Appreciate your input on this

It should work with more autoresponders than just Aweber. Get Response, Imnica, and others.

      Thanks for your input.
As I'm not using any of these I could need your help in getting some form HTML codes and stuff like that. I'll research what exactly I need and come back to you later.

I'll add any suggestions here from now on:
      - multiple levels of rewards
      - AR: Get Response
      - AR: Imnica (Richelo Killian)
      - AR: Mailchimp (RussRave)
      - step-by-step instructional video for installation and use that was as easy to follow as Frank's
      - reset everyone's referrals back to 0
      - easy customization, templates
      - add images to pages instead of just creating page with only text (image upload?)
      - "forgot password" option

Thanks for all the suggestions. Any more?
I'm just listing these here right now - I don't promise to implement all of these but I'll try

lol I was planning on doing these but and add the multi levels of rewards. That should be cool. I will be looking forward to the outcome of this. I'll just wait on this one to be released. Thanks for doing this for the community!

I'd like the ability to reset everyone's referrals back to 0.

I had the idea of using a site to offer multiple free bribes. So when I add a new bribe, I'd like the ability to just reset everyone's referrals back to 0 (without having them to re-register again) so they need to refer X amount of people again to get it.

This would get people referring again without having to set up a whole new site.

My only request is that you include a step-by-step instructional video for installation and use that was as easy to follow as Frank's. He did a nice job on that.

Talking about setting referrals back to 0:
I think this is a good idead but I'm not going to include it in the first version as I only wanted to create a better GKLM product which some important improvements.

It is however included on the "VLM 2.0" list which I didn't plan to create initially but which I think will be very useful.

It could either be setting referrals back to 0 or having a feature where if you want to add another reward (level) or content page to the site to get more referrals, in order for people to get access to it they'd have to refer another X amount of people. (Whatever you set.) This way you could add more content on a separate page and the link would show up in their reward section instead of setting up a completely new domain for the new content.

I think making my second idea would work better than setting things back to 0.

I have the karma list machine and i really think its a good idea to make some improvements. I have just seen the VLM screen-shots and it simply looks fantastic and it is a great job so far. Here are my suggestions

In my opinion many of the auto-response services on the net are a bit expensive especially if you get a huge list and haven't figured out how to make money yet.

It should support autoresponseplus.com which is the one some of the pros use to keep cost down and maximize profits as well as keeping list on their own server. To implement you can just contact the company maybe they are willing to help you.

There should be an optional ad on invite/send to friends button just type in the email addresses on the landing pages.

I dont know how it functions but besides customization of design on product and landing pages it should be easy to integrate/implement flowplayer.org if the referral bonus is a video.

By the way i would like to have one and test it when it is ready for that

I'll look into that. I've added it to my list
Actually you can keep the list on your own server if you're not using an autoresponder which is supported by the software. However, there is currently no way to export the user data other than accessing the database directly.
As I'm a techie I'm actually going to create a small script that imports the users into my own mailing list software but I'm sure this would be of interest to you as well. I'll think about it.

I think this has not been implemented in the GKLM to prevent spamming as you server would be sending the messages. But this is definetly worth a look for VLM 2.0.

You can edit the HTML source code directly and embed the Flowplayer code in it. Due to licensing restrictions I cannot include the GPL Flowplayer directly.

Unless you or have someone else full time working with all of the ISPs, it's not worth it to send e-mail from your own server. Your e-mail will be delivered to the junk folder and the IP address of your server will get banned in a heartbeat. That's why software like Viral Friend Generator doesn't work so well.

Paying $20-$40 to a company like Aweber is a bargain to have someone working full time with the ISPs on deliverability.

Something like GKLM is so great because there's no e-mail sent on your end. The prospect posts your info for you on social media sites or sends e-mail for you through their own account.

Definitely add more space for us to work in...be able to add both text and video, similar to a normal squeeze page. Franks stuff only allows 6-7 lines of 12 font text before everything starts to overlap.

Of course I'll do that The problem occurs with GKLM because it's using absolute positioning rather than the normal "flow of elements".

Sorry, the original link no longer works. It worked for some time even after ListControl was sold out but I think uploading the original GKLM somewhere now might be a "unknown license violation".

It shouldn't need to integrate with any particular autoresponder. If you track thankyou pages it should work with them all.

I think the best feature you could offer is a HOSTED solution so users don't need to install any pesky scripts. Charge a small monthly fee for access. I'm suprised nobody's done this yet.

Technically that's possible but the problem is that the user himself needs to post the signup form to the autoresponder website which then redirects him back to your own site.

Doing this on the "Thank You" page would still require the user to click on a button and submit the form to the autoreponder site.
I think this is because of legal reasons to prevent spamming.

I like that idea but just imagine Frank Kern busting your servers with a single email he's sending to his list. Maybe the website should be "hosted in the cloud"? (like Amazons CDN)

I'm not talking about the emails, I'm talking about offering this as a hosted solution for a monthly fee. If you've then got an internet marketer with a huge list that starts to send out thousands of emails your *web* servers are literally flooded with requests by people clicking on the links in the emails.

That means when offering a hosted solution you need to have a very robust system of multiple servers that can handle thousands of requests per second just in case you've one customer with a huge list even when most of your "hosted customers" send just a couple of users to your site per second. So you need to have a server farm that's capable of handling thousands of requests on standby idling around most of the time just in case this may happen.

And if the HTTP requests come in you just can't stop them so I think it's a rather complicated server farm you'd need if I were to offer VLM hosting.
That's why I'm not planning to offer a "hosted VLM solution".

Yes, I could, but most people don't know what a phar package is and it would be harder for them to install than just unpacking a ZIP file.

For any autoresponder VLM should support I need at least one HTML signup form which should redirect the user after subscribing to http://www.virallistmachine.net/test.php.
So whichever autoresponder you wish to have support in VLM I'd be happy if you could send me some HTML code for.
Otherwise I have to regret that I can't implement a specific autoresponder - no code, no implementation

    Thanks.

Hi Stan, thanks for your input.
However I think that feature will not be integrated in this product, maybe in a later version as this would require a different database and system structure.

However, you can install multiple instances using the same database which is not possible with the original GKLM

Spreading the word is great as I currently only have a very small list as I just started in IM not so long ago. Prior to that I've created many successful websites since 1996 but there was no list building involved.

My goal is to provide a much better and more useful version than the original GKLM is. And it'll be available for free (probably only for a limited time though).

Currently I haven't implemented any autoresponder at all because nobody sent me the HTML code for a form for his favored autoresponder service which redirects to http://www.virallistmachine.net/test.php with the user data posted back to that URL (just like Frank showed how to do with AWeber in the GKLM video).

As I'll be giving away the system for free I'm not going to sign up for any autoresponder service just to add support for it.

        Any help is appreciated!

Richelo Killian offered to help you integrate it with Imnica. You couldn't ask for better help, I think he owns the company or is at least a major player in it.

Just checked out the dev site - and... WOW! I can't wait to get my hands on it. Great job!

I don't know if you are still taking suggestions - but the ability to use the 'machine' within an existing site would be great. For example, embed within a Wordpress blog. Don't know if that is technically possible, but it would be great if it is!

    Thanks,

Oh, sorry, something weird must have happened. I know that I have replied to that but somehow I seem to have forgotten to send the message or something like that.

Well, you can embed the system via an iframe in a WordPress blog. If you modify the templates and CSS you could actually make it appear as if it is a part of your blog.
A full inclusion in a WordPress blog however would only be possible if it would be implemented as a WordPress plugin which it is not.

Maybe I'll support this directly with a later version of the VLM.
Anyways, thank you very much for your ideas and feedback

I totally agree. A WordPress plug-in based on the GKLM would be awesome. I want to be able to plug the process into an existing blog. Not interested in letting it drive the look and feel of my website.

I would if I'd use PhotoShop at all.
I've actually created all the graphics with PhotoImpact and I could include those graphics but I think this only makes sense with a PLR version, right?
There are not many graphics at all in the system anyways - just the signup and login boxes and the buttons in the admin panel (well, and the page background of course).

I think adding the source graphics to the personal license download is not something I'm going to do, but I'll maybe do it in a PLR version which I am thinking about releasing later.

Anyways, all of the graphics are theme-specific and contained in the theme directory so changing them is relatively easy.

VLM supports themes so you'd just have to do some CSS and HTML magic to get whatever you like

I'm currently planning to maybe release a feature-complete beta version tomorrow.
There are just some smaller things still to do and I'm going to release it as a beta version because I cannot find out if it works on every server (with PHP5 and MySQL).
It's not going to be a "20% complete" beta, rather a "95% complete" beta

Currently I can only support AWeber as I didn't receive any more form code that redirects the user to http://www.virallistmachine.net/test.php.
Whoever wishes to have his autoresponder supported needs to actually create a new list with his autoresponder just for me to test and implement the VLM integration.
That's how I was able to implement AWeber support.

I appreciate your input very much! Thanks for your great encouragement and help!

    Here my suggestion.
The edit part. Im not techie person, but I believe it is not that hard to put the editorial on the script itself, isn't it?

So, it would be handy for us, to edit it anywhere even though we left our original coding.

    Just my 2 cents.

In GKLM the referred user has to signup, it's counting signups as well - and VLM does so as well.

To avoid customer service issues from everyone who installs this, I think you're going to want to implement a password recovery option. This way we don't have to get e-mails from people who have signed up asking for their passwords when they forget them.

Ok, as a PHP programmer myself, I'm trying to edit it such that it can integrate on my existing squeeze page with my own custom form.

But I want the form to include only "name" and "email" (like most optin form page) -- the "password" is a custom field for Aweber, which is randomly generated as a hidden field.

This would require the users to create a another custom field "password" when creating their web form.

    Example:
    {autoresponder_field_password} = "custom email"
    {autoresponder_field_password} = "custom password"
    Code:
    <input id="sgnFrmPass" type="text" name="{autoresponder_field_password}" value="{signup_password}" />

And the {signup_password} is generated randomly but a hidden value in the form.
That way, in first autoresponder message, I can personalize the email to include password in the mail I send to them.

Actually the password form is emptied by the JavaScript code prior to submitting the form to AWeber because I though "AWeber doesn't need to know the user's password for that site".

Great that you've found a way to do that.
I personally don't like pages that generate a password that I can't change (yes, I know, that's how the admin password is created ) so I didn't implement it this way.

It would be great if that password was not asked for until the second page. Trust me, I've run millions of impressions through split-testing and I can confirm that asking for email alone always generates the most sign-ups. Asking for something like a password on the landing page will probably hurt conversions.

It would be great if there was an option for an intermediary page after asking for just the email on the first page. It could say something like, "Thanks for subscribing, you're almost done!" "Now just choose a password to access your free content!"

Ok, what's a simple edit so that I can include their "name" in the signup form?

Also, do you mind if I send you a PM for help doing custom editing?

All I want to do is -- have them enter "name" and "email" only...where "password" is a hidden field.

    The password is generated randomly.

So, when they create their account in their auto responder, they will have to create 3 fields -- name, email, and password. But only the name and email fields are required. The password field will be inserted both into the VLM database and also in their autoresponder account.

That way, I can send a personalize email displaying their password.

    In Aweber, it's a custom field...like <input type="hidden" name="custom password" ....

Yikes... I thought that it had to be in the root directory (according to the videos.) Didn't know it would overwrite my existing website. Ouch! Had to do some clean up work. :-(

...now putting it in a subdir.

Sascha, I don't think anyone is going to put this in their main www dir. Might want to put a note in the Installation notes area on your site.

Thanks again for this. Looks like it was a lot of hours on the keyboard. Much appreciated.

      ---Update---

I installed it in a subdir... on a Host Gator typical cPanel install. Here's what it looks like:

And when I click and see where my images are, this is the URL I get:

      http://www.threebestdogs.com/ebook/admin/www.threebestdogs.com/ebook/system/themes/default/admin/tab_setup_active.png

      Can that be fixed?

      Thanks!!

That sounds logical to me, I've written it down though I think this would require many changes. I can#t promise to implement it though.

    Just add this to system/customize/signup.tpl:
    <div class="left">Name:</div>
    <div class="right">
    <input id="sgnFrmName" type="text" name="???" value="" />
    </div>

    <div class="clear"></div>

Use the correct value for "name" for your autoresponder. Keep in mind that the name is not stored in the VLM database though.

To add the password generation code you have to modify the index.php but keep in mind that you might experience problems with updates of the software (might overwrite your code).
I think you can add any name you wish for the password field as long as you don't change its "id".

You forgot to mention that you're using Chrome (correct, isn't it?) That's really funny because it shows up correctly in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. So you might just want to use one of those browsers instead while I'm trying to find the root of the problem.

If you see a form on a page that says "password" most people will think, "oh, I don't have the password for this". It will destroy optin rates. All my products are not in IM but for the general public so it's important to keep things as streamlined and non-confusing as possible. I suppose the next best option would be not to ask for a password at all but to simply auto-generate one.

      Excellent script!

What file do I edit so that my members do not receive an email each time they refer someone? Imagine if one of my subscriber refer 30 new subscribers a day -- that would be too much email.

The same goes for the "Please activate your free account" email which I want to disable. I had edit a bit such that all users status are 'active" by default.

    Thanks!

Also, I got a problem -- whenever I sign up, I get an error message.
"A server error occured. Please try again later.
Got error code 0 from server."

I completely understand that however I don't like auto-generated passwords the user can't change so I'd only implement it if a "change my password" option was available which currently is not.

Only if you set the required number of referrals above 30 - once a user has referred enough people to get the reward he's not going to receive any more emails about it. If he still does it is a bug and not intended.
If you see that behavior please send me an email with your "System Information" included in it and I'll look into it.

I signed up to download the software, but never got the email to confirm my address. (Not in the spam folder either.) I gave it at least an hour, I think 2, and it still hasn't arrived.

Trying to sign up again only says there's an error, the email already exists in the system. (GKLM had this problem too.) There's no way to retrieve a lost password so I can't use that until it's implemented obviously.

I've tried a few more times, once with a different email address that is more "standard" and once with the more "standard" email plus a password with no special characters to see if that makes a difference. (I was using an email that had address+sort@domain syntax which is valid but can break some sites, and the original password had a double quote in it.)

Going on 10 minutes no email, will post back if one or 2 or all 3 emails ever show up.

Sorry, that's not a problem, that's a feature because the email address is the login so it has to be unique! Even Facebook does not allow this.

I'm planning to implement this but retrieving a lost password does not activate your account so you need in fact have the option to resend the activation mail.

I meant problem in that I can't request a new confirmation, not so much being able to create a new user name w/the same email address.

    Congratulations!!
Today I responded to shoemoneyx.com, who has a viral sign-up that integrates aweber. The "referrer" never has to login with a password to receive their reward.

    step 1 they sign-up with a name & email.
Step 2 they are redirected to a page with unique url to refer friends
step 3: refer friends using email client
step 4: receive emails announcing you have referred a visitor when visitor clicks url
step 5: after fifth referral , receive an email with a thank you gift.

I NEVER had to login with a password. This seems a bit easier on the user and the graphics matched the website perfectly.

Can I do this with your system?

I just went and signed up for shoemoneyx.com after reading this and WOW, that's a pretty slick set-up! I wouldn't think it would be hard to change VLM over to something like that though that would be entirely up to Sascha. I noticed shoemoneyx.com doesn't require the user to "accept the terms and conditions" either. Very lightweight and effective script, imo.

"Easier" does not automatically mean better.
And who says that what you are suggesting is "easier" -- you?
How have you come to that conclusion?

It is well known (and tested) that for every field you add in your opt-in form, the opt-in rate will drop considerably (usually by 10-15%).
And: Many *current* tests have shown that adding the name in the subject or in body text of marketing emails does not increase open rates and conversion (and can sometimes even *decrease* conversion).

Well, is then the password field better than first name field?
Yes, in this case it is much better.
      Why?
Because it makes the whole thing much more believable in this case. That's why.
      More believable = more trust = more opt-ins & referrals = better bottom-line results.

So, just because some shoemoney guy does it differently it does NOT automatically mean his system is better.
And yes, I know very well who shoemoney is.

With respect (and I tend to agree with you on both the less fields they have to fill in and the "password" issue) you're doing the same thing. You're saying "It is well known (and tested)". Who says it's "well-known and tested"? You? See what I mean?

          Yes, I am saying that.
And also a couple of well-known and respected marketers like Ryan Deiss and Perry Belcher who tested this stuff to death.
Oh, and why do you think did Frank Kern, the guy who released the Good Karma Machine, left out the name field?
"He must have left it out because he just 'guessed' it would be better or because he was to lazy to tell that to his programmers."
          Right?

Or did he leave the name field out because he wanted that all people using his Good Karma Machine would get less opt-ins?
Oh, no, that would hardly be logical because he is using the same form with the same fields, right?

So, even if you don't know anything about "well-known and tested" things,
you can get pretty far just by using basic logic...

Not currently. Because the GKLM was so well received initially I've implemented the same signup system in the VLM:
    1) no name, only email + password
    2) VLM just like GKLM only supports double-optin subscribers, not single-optin and they have to confirm the signup and login to get the link.
    3) yes
    4) yes, but only if the user has confirmed his double-optin to your mailing list
    5) yes

You can completely redesign the website to adapt it to your design as VLM is theme-based.

      Hi Tony,

I have *developed* the system so that it doesn't have SQL injections and XSS problems. I think the only way to create secure software is to think about security on every letter you're typing, not just checking it afterwards.

Do you have a timeframe of when you're going to implement the password retrieval? I don't know how to retrieve them for people and they get really irritated that they have to re-register with another e-mail address and start over again just because they forget their password.
