External Drive Recommendations

Hey Warriors,

Looking for an external drive to back up pc files. Can anyone recommend one. I saw a Seagate 250GB at Best Buy for $49.

What's the lifespan of these devices, is it worth the extra to get 1TB for future storage or are they only short term devices?

  • I own My Passport Essential by WD. This is a Ultra Portable Hard Drive and Smart Backup and Storage. This one has an storage of 320 GB and believe it works great and is not expensive at all. I definitely recommend it to anyone and if you need a bigger storage they also have it and is very easy to follow steps given to save your files.

    • I second this, although I own the 1TB version. I previously owned an older 250GB model and I've loved both of them.

      The 1TB and I'm sure all others come with their own software which includes an interface showing what percentage of your drive is being used for music, movies, etc. That software also allows you to encrypt your drive, so that you must enter a password upon each connection to access the files.

      Also, this drive was number two in a product test from PC Magazine. The first one was a Mac only version of a drive (figure that one out... in a PC magazing :rolleyes.

      I would recommend getting the 1TB version of whatever drive you choose, but that's just my own preference. You will probably get plenty of mileage out of a 350GB. Try TigerDirect.com or check at a local Best Buy.

      Edit: If you don't need as much portability I also own and recommend the My Book 1TB from the same company (Western Digital).

  • Just don't get a cheap 500gb Maxtor! Mine broke down for no apparent reason with lots of stuff on it. I still have the physical hard drive as I broke it apart, been meaning to get it restored. You're better off getting a western digital or freecom and pay the extra bux for reliability.
  • Over the years I've used Seagate and Western Digital. Both work well and I've never had problems with them.

    At the moment I'm using WD passports.
