    Hello,
the one thing that I have learned about buying hosting is that not to pay for more than one month at a time until you are happy with the services.
I use Bluehost and Hostgator and have been very happy with them.

    Something new soon.

I have hosting accounts with Bluehost and Hostgator. Both are great w/ support.
I will say that Bluehost does seem to answer the phone a bit faster when I do have a support question.

      Hope this helps

This thread has been useless in a real world sense so far.
NO ONE has said what they like more about HostGator over GoDaddy.
I've heard this a lot and I would love some people to post some actual
problems or lack that GoDaddy has or some features or benefits that
HostGator has over GoDaddy. I have about 70+ domains bought from
GoDaddy and hosted there under one Deluxe CGI hosting account and
if I could get the same or better service for 20-30% less, I'd move them.

So, can anyone provide some specifics please?
What's EXACTLY is better about HostGator?
        Cheaper?
They allow you to do things that GoDaddy does not on your site?
Better or easier to use back end?

GoDaddy support has always answered my questions and been a great help.
The ONLY problem I've ever had was when I wanted to use some 3rd party
auto-responder that would not work for some reason with GoDaddy and the
vendor said I'd have to use HostGator instead.

HELP me understand what other reasons I might have to switch.
I'm also not eager to have problems switching over when I have to move the
data over to new servers and spend all that time uploading and configuring
        the new hosting.

Thank you for any help with this.

        ZapAdeeBoom!

I have GoDaddy, BlueHost and Dreamhost.

I personally do not like GoDaddy because:

        1) It is slower than the other two.
        2) Wordpress is a pain to set up on GD compared to the other two.
        3) I get 100 MySQL DB on BH, unlimited on Dreamhost and 25 on GD, for roughly the same amount of $$$ per month.

BH and DH are about the same, quality-wise.

Now obviously, if you don't use WordPress or any other feature that does not use a MySQL DB connection, the MySQL part won't be important for you.

I may eventually also make an account on HostGator, only because I like to spread my sites out -- if a server goes out on one host, I have others that are still up. Not that I've had problems, but more like I want the insurance.

I'd get rid of the GD hosting, but it serves another purpose for me, aside from traditional hosting. And also I'm lazy and don't feel like putting in the work for moving the sites.

        Hope this helps!

Just a question for you guys who've supported Hostgator:

Are you using the web hosting or the reseller hosting?

I'm deciding between those two now and I'm not seeing the power/point of reseller if I don't resell...

I agree Hostgator is my favorite webhost also. They have great support staff who I have called plenty of times 24/7 very helpful. They are all English speaking, so that is a big plus based in Texas. No Indian call centers - lol no offense to you Indians out there.

I think a lot of it just happens to be what server you end up on. I just took a year from Bluehost and despite all the rave reviews it gets - it's virtually unusable. I probably won't see the end of the month out before I move away from there.

So the advice about trying the monthly option is recommended. That's what I'd normally do but this was so cheap that I just took the gamble, and it didn't pay off.

I've found HostGator Excellent. Any problems I have had (and it has been due to me not knowing what to do!) I just use the live chat and it's sorted in mins. They get the thums up from me for service and price is great.

I need a reliable and similarly price UK based equivalent.

    Cheers

      I had problems with lunar.

In any case, I want to change my host. I really want to find a host that is not exaclty the dirty cheapest....I also don't want a host that is going to send me suprise bills...What I want for sure is a host that has good security features for shared accounts..that's for sure. For me that will come first.

So I may go with liquidweb shared hosting for now, it seems they have some security features, and they have the 100% uptime...but it is more expensive.

I just need to research more.

  • Hi all,
What exactly is the problem with GoDaddy? I've been with them since 2000 and I can only recall my site going down twice and one of those times was around 9/11. So I am very curious about what problems others have had. Throughout the years I've run Joomla sites, Moodle courses, chat rooms and arcade game platforms without a hitch. Have I just been lucky? Have I just jinxed myself?

Used D9 Hosting for a while, they were very helpful.

Have been using Host Gator last 3 years, zero problems, support is awesome. The question is not, do they "never" have problems, but when they do have issues how fast is their response time. Host Gator is "Johnny on the Spot"

If I find a good hosting offer, I allways do a search for the company name on webhostingtalk.com...

Id rather pay a little more and get a good host.

Hostgator if you are looking for "Unlimited" sort of stuff.

Steadfast all the way if you are looking for NON over seller type of host. They allow monthly billing.

I work with Goddady as domain registrant and hostgator as hosting.

Godaddy is one of the leader in domain registration services, but not in hosting services.
Hostgator (if not the best) is one on the best on hosting services in the world. It is possible that not the cheapest, but really I prefer pay a little more for services and unlimmited bandwidth, hosting space, domains and email accounts.

I also ear about bluehost, but HostGator work well for me. Why change it (I'm very lazy to do it, and in if something work well. DON'T TOUCH IT.

I been with godaddy for the last four years, and never had a problem with down time and I can call 24/7 and always have my questions answered and the waiting time to speak to a customer service rep. is amount 3min. But what ever work for you stick with it.

I recommend getting a top level service. With hosting, you DEFINITELY get what you pay for. Ring around and talk to people. That is the best way to compare. You can also work out what type of support you will be getting in the process. NOTHING beats having the direct number of a technician that is in the data centre. Nothing.

    - With a reseller account at least.
    - Static IP Address
    - Own Name Servers
    - Be sure to ask about BACKUPS and Guarantees (Get this in writing!!!)

Have had an absolute HORROR story with Hostgator a couple of years ago. Dedicated server, all the trimmings - management basically told me that my data is gone. I had approximately 100 sites - a mix of my web design client's sites and personal sites. A lower level support staff let it slip to me that they mixed-up the serial numbers on the servers and formatted the wrong one. Interesting that Hostgator managers didn't say that - they were very hesitant to say anything!!!!

All the hosting accounts were ALL deleted - Drive was mistakenly formatted by hostgator. Hostgator refused to send the drive to the forensic data restorers. Basically my tough luck.

For this reason, I recommend someone in your local area - or at least within your state. Where the actual servers (the data center) are physically located.

If you are going to take your web sites seriously - pay a bit extra, support your local tech company and get quality. You have no idea how precious your data is until you loose it - trust me.

The Golden Rules: No matter what ANYONE says: Back-up yourself to your own personal drive regularly and get everything in writing.

I don't want to scare you by this. I didn't think that it could happen to me. But it did - and I wish someone gave me the same advice that I am giving you now.

    Best of luck.
    B
