Project or Task Managment Software

I use the community edition of Feng Office, which is great but requires installation on your own server. It's quite a powerful solution, but the reason I use it is because I can give both clients and outsourcers access. It might be a bit overkill for a one man show, but at least you know it'll grow with you!

More recently ive been using "Action Machine" as i found a copy of it the other week and had totally forgotten about it.

Now it isn't really a very good scheduling tool etc unless you can set time limit's on things to lead up to doing a phone call a X oclock but for productivity increase it work's a treat!

I use a very nice free task management tool called clockingit, you can find it here www.clockingit.com once you get used to it you will save a lot of time. Hope this helps you out. Ohh and you can even give your clients access which most of mine love. Good luck, Kieron

are you able to have 30 of your contacts lets say,... view only the tasks they need to do?

Basecamp is all I use. It has reduced my energy and expenses significantly. Without it, I would pay about $1,800 per month in increased personnel expenses.

I've been doing research to answer this particular situation for the last 6mths, myself. I've found some pretty good apps; all of which lacked something... whether it be price not right, missing features, flexibility blah blah.

I looked again at everything mentioned, here and then decided to look at Google Apps one more time to see if they've updated their offering at all.

That's when I found this...

This one looks also very interesting with the integration of google apps. I just read on their site that they will be able to improve their gantt chart and give you the flexibility to edit it and change relationships.

and also MS project....but my research concluded at Collabtive. I love it!!!

I have used this open source version of Basecamp, and Active Colab...
Collabtive - Open Source collaboration
It is free. Open source. And you install on your own server and you keep the total
control. You can give access to your outsourcing staff, your clients and managers...

On three levels of access.
Also comes with time tracking, projects, chat, file management and also love
the user friendly interface.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I had given up on finding something that worked and did not cost the earth.

I was looking for a way to manage the resources for my article writer without having to send her a plr pack each week.

Just finished a trial of Confluence, which looked really good and ticked all of the features boxes, but I spent most of my time ironing out the bugs and when it did start to work, it fell over and refused to work!

The other related options were stupidly expensive, so had given up and continued with folders and zip files.

I will take time looking at all of your suggestions and come back with my thoughts.

  I researched a lot to find the PM system for IM needs and found that either they were too expensive or lacked features or cost per user per month. None of these were acceptable to me and hence I designed my own system.
  
  It is currently under development and is coming out great. It did cost me a lot to get it developed, but seeing how I am planning to enhance it to do IM, it is time, effort and money well spent. I can already see many instances that would make my life easier if I had it in use right now. It is almost there and can't wait for it.
  
  I spent almost 7 months researching a lot of systems and could not believe that there was no system out there that actually will fit the needs of a IM that was affordable. I am big on systems and use outsourcers a lot and hence needed something quick as things were getting out of hand quickly. A lot of the systems described above and the others not discussed are all good for a particular need, but not for project management.
  
  Most are collaboration tools and to-do lists, not PM software. If you are looking for collaboration tool and a to-do list, then basecamp is good, but I see a lot of people using it as a PM tool, which it is not.
  
  It does not help you plan, execute, analyze and improve, which is the whole point of a business. It helps in execution after planning stage is complete, but does not help to analyze and improve the performance of your organization. I am surprised at many people who use this and similar software as a PM tool.
  
  Regardless, all of these are better than using excel, word and email i guess.
