Thesis Theme, really that good?

by Joseph Then 37 replies
I was looking at a couple of themes and it seems to me that Thesis theme is a pretty powerful theme.

I looked at the different implementation and I must say that I'm impressed.

Has anyone used it and would like to give this theme a thumb up? Or thumb down?

I use it. I will say that is may be different than many other premium themes that you have used in the past.

It operates more as a framework than a theme. It provides a lot of functionality that you may not find in a lot of themes.

That functionality comes at a price of a learning curve though.

Make sure you download the plug in Openhooks. It makes life much easier.

Also their support forum is very active and they provide a ton of help. They also release a new version on a regular basis to improve the functionality of it.

I use it on nearly every blog I have. Out of the box it looks good but can always use some customization so you stand out.

      Hi,
Much the same as what Scott says above, you will need to tweak it a bit to get the look you want but you can use it for anything, web pages or blog posts.

I also use it on everything, it's that good.

People really like the 33% commission on all sales and the 60-day return cookie. That's what makes it an outstanding theme and why it comes so highly recommended.

Since none of us have even offered an affiliate link, I doubt that is the reason for it.

It is a rock solid theme/framework with an excellent support team in place.

      Is it for everyone? Nope.

      Does everyone love it? Nope.

You can do about anything you want with it but it does require understanding what you are doing or finding someone who does.

Probably because the rules here don't allow it.

But, that is the main reason why it was and is promoted so heavily. It's excellent marketing on their part and it's great that they're backing it up with good service (unlike some blogging and IM products). My problem is that it is oversold by affiliates as the "be all, end all" of WordPress themes and, because they have such a generous affiliate program, it's overpriced by a least 33%.

I know that an affiliate link in here would be deleted. That was the point.

While people outside of the Warrior Forum may promote it for the commission, inside here I expect to get an honest answer.

Many people may have bought Thesis because of their marketing...but the product lives up to its reputation. The support backs it up?

It is a great framework/theme but isn't for everyone. If you want something to through up an easy affiliate review type site, you can find others that are custom designed for it out of the box. Can Thesis be made to look like that? Yes but it takes work.

I will admit to not having a lot of experience with other themes. I found Thesis early and it has done everything I needed it to do. If I want to change the look and layout of my blogs and sites, I don't need to switch themes.

I prefer to find something that works, make it part of my system and get on with life. When people ask if Thesis is a good theme, I always answer yes.

If it didn't work many of the top bloggers wouldn't use it. They also use other themes.

We just shouldn't treat a suggestion for a product as only because of the affiliate commission. I won't suggest a product regardless of the commission if I don't think it is beneficial.

It is my contention that the primary, and in some cases the only, reason they use it and promote it is because of the theme's generous commission structure. If it was a free theme they wouldn't use or promote is so heavily. You don't see them using/promoting Justin Tadlock's Hybrid Theme Framework or the very flexible Atahualpa theme. Why? simply because there's no money in it for them.

I'm with you on this one. I'm a great fan of Hybrid, use it for all my sites, it's free and I would put it up against any Premuim Theme out there. Justin provides great support and the forum members are just as helpful, they support each other without any monetary incentives.

I have not used thesis, but I would suspect that since design elements are built into the theme this will cause some overheads, not so with Hybrid, it's all css.

I personally use the Thesis theme for over a year now. I am very satisfied wit hit and with the support you get.

Every question gets answered and usually you will find answers to just about anything on the forum.

It is highly customizable without even touching the css files and playing with the code.

      I can only recommend it.

I have Thesis and I can't figure it out.

I can't even change the Header!

Of course I found someone in the forum that was more that happy
to do it for me for $200! That didn't happen.

I don't have any problems making major changes to other
      WP sites.

And I understand programming, html, PHP, CSS
I've tried Firebug and everything else to figure it out.

      I finally just gave up.

I must say that I bought it almost two years ago.
I have not paid any attention to their upgrades
      so maybe it's easier now.

The thesis theme has gone through the ringer lately with Chris Pearson (the creator) battling with Matt Mullenweg (WordPress founder) over GPL issues.

Some Thesis users are jumping ship like Copy Blogger aka Brian Clarke who was formerly a minority partner of Chris Pearson. Brian Clarke mentioned that he didn't think the Thesis theme played well with WordPress.

Then there's Chris Brogan who recently switched to the Genesis Framework.

For most people with Thesis, you'll need to buy a Thesis skin unless you're proficient at web design or are happy with the standard Thesis look--basically looks like the old neoclassical theme that Chris designed years ago.

The Blogussion skin does look pretty sick if you need to find a great looking Thesis skin.

Other themes to consider would be the Genesis Framework which I've heard great things about from my designer friends. Genesis is also much cheaper to use since you can buy a theme and run it on as many sites as you like. Also you get the child theme or skin with the Genesis Framework for about the base price for Thesis.

    I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING IT.
From my past experience in blogging, Thesis is the best and the most SEO-friendly theme in all aspects. After all, it's unique customization options are just astonishing.

    BTW
there are a lot of themes to use if you are unable to customize it yourself. That's the best advantage of using Thesis. In total, its worth your bucks.

I have used it a bit and found the options and customization great.

The first time I tried it I hit the learning curve and bailed.

A couple months later I tried it again and made good progress in a few hours.

I have a new site to setup soon, and am debating on using Thesis, which is why I visited this thread.

      * If you do not use Thesis regularly, you might forget how it works and need to refresh yourself a bit on it each time you dive in. I experienced this.

      * Look and feel customization is easy, and I got the result I wanted using the fairly intuitive admin interfaces and watching a tutorial video.

      * Most problems I ran up against were solved through search of the support forums.

      * It's another thing to learn, on top of WordPress, and another thing to admin (updates mostly) on top of WordPress.

So, pros and cons for me to consider. I'll look into Genesis as well, thanks for the tip.

Using OpenHook and CSS I've been able to match just about any design and functionality needs via Thesis. I've pumped out over a dozen sites with it and I fan of the control you have - but having some CSS, jQuery, and PHP experience helps tremendously. I use it primarily when I need a CMS to give to a client.

I bought it about year and a half / two years ago. I regret giving them my money. I find the support forums hit and miss and one of the mods over there was getting rude to people who she thought was asking 'stupid question', but the questions weren't stupid and there was no easy answer for the solution.

The theme is easy to customize if you like the basic 'blah' look. If you want to do intensive customization to look 'different' and 'stand out', it's a big challenge, and there's very little help... unless you want to pay more $$$.

I wouldn't recommend Thesis. I would recommend Studiopress, they make solid themes.

Here's my Thesis, I still can't get it to fit on standard screens or standard pixel screens properly. I made a thread on Thesis support forum, but was told to wait til the next version because it might work 'better'. Gah! I've been waiting 1.5 years for the fix... heh, what's 6 more months?

Support is awful, theme is blah, customization is difficult if you want it to stand out, SEO benefits are no better than the All In One SEO + free theme.

    Save your money.

Thesis has good support. And due to the sizeable user base, there are ample tutorials floating around from the community.

Version 1.8 was just released, and introduced some particularly cool features. My favourite being the ability to add your own headline and custom content to category pages. Thesis also now supports the Google Font Directory, which adds another 28 fonts for you to choose from, which are served directly from Google so everyone can see them. The favicon uploader is also pretty cool...

I just updated to 1.8 and must say the support is awful. Since I purchased Thesis (and i regret it more than anything), it's been nothing but problems.

It's very complicating and time consuming. Support is the worse that I've ever had to deal with. I would consider myself 'average' for coding and styling. I've done a couple of dozen websites from vBulletin, SMF, Wordpress to Joomla software and themes, and I can't get over how complicating it Thesis is. It's been a nightmare since I purchased it.

Been trying to get support help on one particular issue on their exclusive support forum for over a month. So far I got one replay stating "your issue will be resolved in 1.8, wait for the release". So I waited a month for the 1.8 release and guess what.... the issue is still there. It's not resolved and nobody on the support forum cares to help.

Why did I pay for this? I get better support on free products!!

    Thesis is HORRIBLE!!!!

I use it quite a lot. It's an awesome theme.

At the beginning I didn't like it that much. The design is average, and I know getting annoyed by the settings, but once you know how to use it, it's awesome. Good thing is that if you want to do something complicated you will find help online, because it's a popular theme. I often use it for my niche sites because I think it's very SE-friendly, which is very important.
