Email Marketing- Worth an attempt?

9 replies
I have an ebook that I sell online now. It makes me about $600 a month with no active promotion of any kind. Many of my customers have been defense attorneys.

So it makes sense to attempt to target this group. I am thinking about buying a list and sending a brief email. I have been quoted $375 for 1.2 million defense attorney email address.

Anyway, where can I learn more about email marketing? How do I send a million emails? Is it illegal and will they just be deleted anyway?

Any suggestions as to where to begin are greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

    Buying lists? most auto responder services are against that.

    Jonathan,
    I'd be very, very careful of buying any list. You could end up with your hosting account shut down and/or with your target market a lawsuit for spamming.
    Why don't build your own list of potential buyers by giving a chapter away of your ebook then directing traffic to your site. They sign up for your autoresponder and get the freebie. You could also offer your current buyers an incentive to recommend your ebook. Maybe give them 75% of any sale generated. These types of people probably work in close networking groups up and down the US!

    Jonathan,

    Your $375 can be used for better things.

    No one really knows where that list came from. Plus, most of them are going to be really annoyed that you would send them an email out of the blue trying to get them to buy something. This type of email marketing is equivalent to cold calling people and we all know how annoying those guys (telemarketers) can be.

    Rich hit it on the money. There is a saying,"give something first and you get 100 times in return." Nothing is further than the truth.

    Also, having them be an affiliate for you is even better. It is great to have an army of people trying to sell your product. That means you get more exposure for your product.

      Thank you for the responses. I will be offering a paperback in conjunction with the ebook soon so I can't use clickbank for affiliates. Can anyone suggest reliable affiliate software that will allow me to set up affiliates, track and then manually pay out once a month?

      It is quite tempting to just send a blanket email, but maybe it is a shortcut that I shouldn't take. I was also considering post card mailers to defense attorneys. For some reason junk mail is still a little more accepted than junk email...

      Thanks again.

    You would be better off using your $375 for an Adwords campaign, and offering your target market some (free) incentive to join your opt-in list.

    I agree that a targeted, well-researched ad-words campaign is the best use of your money.

      Jonathan,

      there are several reasons why buying email lists is a bad idea. There are:
      • there's no such a thing as a good email list for sale - most of such lists are ripped to shreds by those who have already purchased them. So, most likely, your emails will either be blocked or end up in a spam box;
      • reputable email marketing vendors don't let you use purchased email lists (most of them insist that you use opt-in email lists);
      • even if your emails reach someone, that will be people who don't know you and are not your target audience. So sending emails this way is like shooting in the dark.
      • your email deliverability and IP address are most likely to be harmed, as you can be reported as a spammer.
      So, I'd rather agree with the previous commentators, that it's better to spend your $375 on a targeted ad-words campaign for your ebook.

        Hi

        I think traditional email marketing is on the way out for the following reasons
        1 solo ad vendors crucify their lists just by keeping on selling solo's to the list
        2 Gmails new filter system is a killer for email marketing
        3 People use throw away email address's to opt-in making most lists useless.

        To build a targeted and responsive list the technology has moved on to cell/mobile phone verified leads --- If someone goes to the trouble of verifying their cell phone they become a serious lead then with a good software you can communicate via sms.

        Thanks Shaun Pm me for information on a software that does this for you today.
