AVG will never give you malware if you get it from the official website.

For free, AVG & Avast are probably your best bet. Be warned though - Avast takes up a lot of resources.

I don't know where you got that information about avast! taking up a lot of resources. In fact it uses a lot less than most. Even compare it to Windows Explorer, avast! is using a tiny bit over 3MB whereas Windows Explorer is using 22MB. And I am using the Pro version of avast!

To answer the OP's question, you can go past avast! with their minimum of one a day definition updates, and some days even 2.

I use microsoft security essential and panda cloud antivirus. You need to have original window to use MSE. Both are fast and I have no problem running both at the same pc.

I have used AVG for years, and I find it to be very user friendly and protecting from virus very well. I download AVG and other free software from FileHippo without risking any malware

AVG is not as slow as it used to be. Get the new version.

I've tried Microsoft Security Essentials and it has a lot of holes, I had several viruses in my PC which MSE didn't pick up. As soon as I removed MSE and installed AVG all my viruses were removed.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a reasonable alternative, but personal favourite is AVG. No anti virus software cleans everything, but the most important thing is to have a certain degree of defense against viruses...

It really amazes me that people use free anti-virus and risk everything for the sake of saving less than $40 per year. I have used Nod32 for the last 4 years and have never been infected. Its well worth the money.

I agree with Frodo77, the problem isn't to do with AVG specifically, it's to do with FREE!

Sure there is a following that have used free antivirus for years without trouble but you have 2 scenarios where free simply isn't good enough:

1) During a virus outbreak, vendors focus on their paying products and signature updates are delayed on their free products

2) In the event the user's machine is compromised and lack of internet access prevents the user from browsing for a solution. In this case, who do you call? Free AV isn't supported by it's vendors, unlike paid for AV.

We reguarly receive phone calls asking for help and advice from customers infected whilst using free AV so I can't knock it, it's an integral part of our business! :-)

Try Norton and McAfee but usually free antivirus don;t work that much. Paid ones are way much better.

I use kaspersky and pair it with Malware Bytes. It should do the trick.

It picked up malware and a nasty rootkit that Malwarebytes and my Eset nod32 didn't catch. Pretty nifty software!

Just to clarify for anyone wondering. CCleaner is a System wide cleanup tool. Malwarebytes is an anti-malware program. Neither are anti-virus programs.

My preference is to go with a full security suite that includes an anti-virus, firewall, email scanner, anti-malware/spyware programs all together.

I am in my first year with Norton 360 and I can only describe it as either paranoid or extremely efficient.

Everyday it tells me it has saved me from a viral disaster and yet it won't allow me to run software provided by Mike Filsaime, this is quite a fun game to play.

Try unzipping the software and starting the install before Norton the paranoid, quarantines and deletes everything, never managed it yet!

For free version, i suggest avira personal or avast, but i will recommend to buy premium antivirus with internet security.

One of the reason is that most free antivirus might be weak with keyloggers, worms, cookie stealers...ur details such as paypal and email account password might be stealed...if you use online payment frequently...you better buy premium antivirus.

AVG is definitely the best. It's also one of the most downloaded software programs and read any reviews you'll see that it's definitely at the top of the free antivirus list, closely followed by Avast
