Do You Recommend Affiliate Summit?

Hey guys,

Just saw that there is an Affiliate Summit West coming up in January in Vegas.

I was considering attending but I've been to 1 IM event in the past and it seemed like there were so many spammers there trying to sell traffic robots and get rich quick system.

I want to connect with other people in the IM space that provide value and have reputable businesses for future JVs. Is Affiliate Summit a good place to do it?

Is anyone else going?

Thanks,

~Sean

I went to Affiliate Summit East earlier this year. It's definitely a good idea to attend if you are in a position to do so. Regarding Sean's experience with people trying to sell their ebooks and trainings at a different IM event - it is definitely NOT that.

The sessions are pretty solid - some better than others for sure...but they are not like some sort of workshop where you get your hand held through step 1, step 2...

One thing to pay attention to is the different level of passes, which give you different access. Some only give you access to the exhibit hall (meaning you can NOT attend the sessions), where you will find a ton of affiliate networks and advertisers/merchants promoting their networks and programs. This is a good chance to chat with affiliate managers. Some passes give you access to some sessions but not others, and the higher level passes give you full access, including an awesome breakfast buffet each morning where you can also meet some great people just sitting down for some grub.

There will be both public and private, invite only parties. I'm sure since it's in vegas there will be more events than the NYC event.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to get yourself in the mix, introduce yourself, engage in conversation, and find some "show buddies" that you can hang with. I was fortunate to hook up with a cool guy right away who i met online prior to the event, and that led to more introductions and someone to meet up with for lunch and parties. If you are an introvert and don't see yourself starting conversation with strangers (who, for the most part, are open and happy to chat), then stay at home.

I wouldn't encourage anyone to go so they can just pitch their own agenda.

It allowed me to get a much better perspective on the big picture and learn about aspects I had no clue about and people were doing. You may want to start another thread in the CPA forum here, as I would bet you'll get many more responses from the folks in that section from both affiliates, affiliate managers and network owners.

Also, do some googling as there are usually some free or discounted passes floating around. Check on some popular affiliate bloggers sites, even some networks.

    I hope that helps.

I'll be there in Vegas. If you come - look me up. I'm only getting an exhibit hall pass. I don't really attend these events for educations but for networking.

The great thing about affiliate summit is its not like a traditional internet marketing event, which is usually just a giant pitchfest. These are the big boys... they're much more professional... and often draw people who fly under the radar to these events...

So you run into lots of people who are doing things in a big way who aren't gurus or who don't sell the techniques on how they do what they do. These people are great to pick their brains because they share A LOT.

It's also motivating to go there and just see for yourself how many people are being successful online with various different models. You walk away thinking - hey if they can do it, why can't I?

Not a lot of egos at these events either. Just a lot of sharp people who are very open. You can learn a lot of you just talk to people and ask them what they do.

            Dan,

PM me or get a hold of me before the event I'll give you my cell. I'm meeting up with some "big names" so to speak, and I'll introduce you to everyone.

I've never been to an Affiliate Summit, but I have gone to a Meetup in my local area where famed blogger John Chow came to visit. It was great.

It's kind of nice to see the marketer you've read about online face to face, and sometimes face to face contact can make things resonate for you in a more personal way.

Sometimes the marketer will show you a neat little trick that he's learned that may not necessarily be up for grabs yet. So I say, go. It's fun.

I imagine Affiliate Summit would be similar but on a bigger scale.

Affiliate Summit is great, but I dont recommend you go unless you know a couple friends that are going. The event is so big that its kinda hard to meet new people unless you are hanging out with the right groups.
