Screen Capture Software??

Hi there

Can anyone recommend a good screen capture software for PC? I have checked out Camtasia, which looks really good but I don't really want to spend $300 at this time?

Does anyone know of anything cheaper that works well?

Thanks

CamStudio is a free alternative that allows video editing but can't compare in quality with Camtasia.

Ashampoo Snap is a cheap point-and-click solution as well that I find is very useful in taking screenshots and recording high quality short screen capture videos without bells and whistle.

To be honest, I tried camtasia a while back and I thought it sucked ass.

It felt like it was made in 2000, at best.

Some of the mac screencast software I've seen is substantially better.

If you need short videos, you can use
    1. Jing (Free & from the creators of Camtasia. I think it may actually be better.)
    2. Screenr.com - Free online screencasts. Nuff said.

(sorry I couldn't post links, I don't have enough posts here yet :/)

Funny, coincidentally 2000 was a while back.

      Have you tried Camtasia recently?

I tried it this past year. I said it "felt like it was made in 2000," not that it was purchased back then.

I also offered 2 other options whereas, ironically, you did not. Odd, no?

Have you tried BB Flashback? They offer 3 versions, (free, standard and pro). The pro version is much cheaper than Camtasia and is all I use. Note I've never used Camtasia so can't compare the two.

To be honest, I tried all 3 but have had the pro for so long now, I can't remember the differences lol. (it's an age thing )

Beauty of BB Flashback is you can try all 3 together and see which one suits you best.

If you are on low budget, then you might wanna try free unregistered copy of hypercam. But it leaves a small text watermark on the top left.

CamStudio is a good option and an alternative for Camtasia. I don't have the link but I read a post by Josh Anderson on using CamStudio. It was pretty good. Look around if you can find that post. It'll help you out.

CamStudio is free and is a great, high-quality product.

It does the job for everything I need, haven't needed to upgrade to a paid version yet.

If you want moving pictures ..you might try Jing, it is made by TechSmith (the makers of Camtasia) and I have see videos done with it and they are fine. MW Snap for still screen captures is good and gives you a wide variety of formats to save to.

  • Thanks to everyone for your recommendations.. a few questions?

When people say that Jing is good for short videos how short are we talking about... 5, 10, 15 mins?

Also what are the differences between Camstudio and Camtasia?

    Thanks

      Camstudio is the best option.
      It is Free.
      Easy to use.
      Easy to handle.
Option of variety of file types. avi, flash etc.
configuration is a bit difficult, but there are many good tutorial on youtube on how to configure audio and video settings.

I recently started using Debut Screen Capture...also comes with video streamer, and a file converter that converts your videos into mp4-flash-mpeg-mov-and a bunch of other formats.

I found that this software works better than camstudio.

Thanks Warriors: my 2 cents: Using Windows 7, I tried using Jing this morning to record an existing video Google had posted-no mic involved. I got the following error message each try: "Jing Warning
    An error occured while recording:
    AudioDeviceOpenFailed".

I uninstalled and reinstalled Jing, and still have the problem. Went to their help files and their solution was impossible for me to implement, as it involved choosing options that don't exist in my sound properties.

They said that their software was really intended to record using your mic anyway, so although it can record from the "system", apparently it might not perform well, so I guess it's time to try some of the other suggestions-as usual, thanks to the Warriors who are always there for each other with helpful advice!
