Best WP Backup Plugins?

Hi Warriors,

Ok, I've been doing a little bit of research. I need to upgrade to the newest version of WP and Willie Crawford has said that this is a critical update.

However, I know I need to back up my WP sites first. I've done a little bit of research, not sure what the best backup plugin is. Someone here recommended the WordPress Backup plugin, which he said backs up the images, themes and plugins directories. But that doesn't address the database.

So other recommended backup plugins I found in my search were:

1. DBC Backup
2. WP-DBManager
3. WP-DBBackup

I'm VERY non-techie and am afraid I'm going to break something!

I'm in contact with a guy from Fiverr.com who has been doing small jobs for me and can do the backups and updates. (He already did one for me a few weeks ago.) But I need to be able to do this myself if necessary (AND know where the backup files are).

Trouble is, I'm not sure which backup plugin(s) I need or which are best.

What is your recommendation?

Thanks so much!

Michelle

    Hello,

I don't use a plugin for this task because most of them don't back-up everything on your blog. My personal preference is for a software program called wp-twin. A licence to use the software is currently $97 but is well worth it in my opinion.

It will back-up ALL your files, images, database, plugins, etc. What you have is a clone of your blog which is simplicity itself to re-install, either on a new host or to replace a blog that has been hacked or otherwise messed up. You can use it on any Word Press blog that you own - it isn't restricted to just one site.

Let me know if I can help further.

Couldn't agree more. This is exactly what I use to backup and clone my websites. Trouble is it only works with some hosts due to security settings. Just wanted to give you the heads up. Works perfectly with Hostgator hosting.

      Thanks for the input guys!

      Josh,

I use FileZilla too and you're right: it's simplicity itself just to drag the files over and save them on my hard drive. Duh! (Yet another example of me over-complicating things.)

      Thanks guys!

I would stay away from backup buddy. It is buggy and when you rely on software for production, the last thing you want is a complete software failure - which has happend to me.

I will try wp twin if they can get the software to work with 24 hours.

I will have two back up methods for production sites as wp software providers just know how to create reliable products (Compared to enterprise software vendors).

I like WP-Twin as well, because it is so simple to use and it backs up everything on your blog with just a few clicks. It becomes a real time-saver especially when you're backing up multiple blogs in quick succession.

I like backup buddy myself. I'm not really sure of the cost, I bought a year developers license from ithemes and it was included. I think it was around 247.

Backup buddy also backup the customized settings for WordPress plugins, themes, and so on?

Or does one have to reenter these settings for a new clone blog?

way more than a backup tool.
why just backup when you can clone?

I recently wrote up a summary of most of the major WordPress backup solutions.

The best solution depends a bit on your circumstances, eg: how often the content is updated, the size, whether you have an S3 accounts etc.

I use WP Twin and it works great in Hostgator. My problem is that it does not work in GoDaddy. I tried working with their support people, but they could not help me. So, if you use Hostgator, WP Twin is the way to go.

I've also researched and written on this topic. Although I haven't explored the WP Twin, but there are some other easy & very low cost solutions:

Free EZPZ One Click Back Up WP plugin will back up to your server. Works great with Hostgator.
      Backsup both files and database.
Set on automate and have an email signal you when each backup is complete.
Can also backup on demand, say before you update.
**It only keeps one backup on your server at a time. So, I transfer the zipped folder to my hard drive where it gets backed up once again via my regular PC backup.
For under $3, you can have the backups uploaded to your Dropbox account, where you can keep more than one at a time.

MyRepono plugin is another good option. Similar to EZPZ but uploads to an offsite storage for very low cost. The files are compressed so they use up very little space and MyRepono gives you a credit to start. And if you know the size of you backup, you can their online calculator to estimate the cost.

I use both of these and have no probs. Love the automation and low cost too.

I have more site backup details on my site (in my signature).

I wanted to develop blogs locally using WAMP and then clone and deploy because my internet connection is painfully slow sometimes... Unfortunately WP Twin doesn't work with WAMP Add to this the fact that all my sites are hosted on Godaddy... Im probably just gonna ask for a refund.

I have said it before and I'll keep saying it because people aren't getting it...

You absolutely do NOT want your backup to be a WORDPRESS PLUGIN. You are relying on something inside of wordpress to back up wordpress. There is a huge problem with that.

Might not be today. Might not be tomorrow. But I guarantee eventually you will run into an issue at some point with your backup solution if it is a plugin. GUARANTEED.

            Hey Jason,
I don't understand your objection to backup plugins...if your WP blog crashes or misbehaves and you have your files and database backed-up somewhere else, what's stopping you from restoring your site? You don't need your blog to access your backups. At least not the plugins I suggested.

Please explain, you seem to know something I don't.

            Thanks

Tried backup buddy, WP-twin both do not work as advertised. WP-twin claims to have top support but after 7 weeks no solution or even a reply for last several weeks... Both fail. The sites they fail on are Headway and large sites 4-5GB...... Drag and drop FTP is only solution and a backup with hosting company.
