Magic Members Membership Plugin Nightmare

Magic Members Membership Plugin is a nightmare to use.

I purchased the Unlimited License (first mistake!) to MM in November to just make an easy and free membership site. All I needed it to do was:
  • Have a squeeze page
  • They enter their information
  • They get a Username & Password
  • They get in.

No payment processing. No fancy-schmancy stuff. A basic free site. Put your email and name in and you get in. Simple, right? Not with Magic Members!

First, their support videos are amusingly short and bleak. Take a look:

(The music alone can drive you crazy.)

Then, much of the trouble I had was because of outdated and quite inaccurate documentation. To be fair, on each "module", there is a link to a short video. Over 80 in all! Nice, but they don't show you much. Here they all are on Vimeo:
magicmembers's videos on Vimeo

They were up on Vimeo for over 6 months and they *just* put them into the plugin a few weeks ago. Amazing.

But the amazing thing was that I was asking for the plugin to do BASIC stuff. For instance, a "thank you page" where, after you register, you are directed to a "thank you page".

Basic, right?

When I sent in a support ticket, they replied:
"We also released an update about custom thank you pages..." (They did it after I pointed out the flaw.)

Well, that's nice, but why isn't this already in there?

Another time, when you registered as a member it would send you an email. Basic stuff. But the email was all HTML characters and messed up.

I emailed support and they fixed it. Fine... but I just felt like I was the only customer using Magic Members and I was debugging it for them. For $297, I am not paying for a Beta version.

One day -- and I am not exaggerating even a little -- I spent a bit over 13 HOURS trying to get Magic Members to work. It's a free site! No shopping carts! No credit cards! Nothing! I mean... how hard is that?!

They, of course, refused any refund (I actually asked to downgrade to the Single license since I never was able to get this working on even ONE site). Okay, fine. It was past the 30 days, but really. Okay, I'm over that.

So, what did I do?

I bought Digital Access Pass and got it set up in three hours. The funny thing is that I blocked out all today to work on the site. It's done! (I just have to add in some content.) Since I had the extra time, I decided to write this post.

I just sent an email to DAP asking to upgrade to the Unlimited License. At least I know it works!

Magic Members, I hope many people read this. It's all true.

I purchased their plugin and refunded the next day. I ended up going with Wishlist Member.

I recall the plugin being a bit too slow on my VPS server. The main reason I refunded was due to the fact they didn't support one-time payments in Clickbank. This was back in March 2010. They recommended I setup a recurring payment for 24 years.

I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt and kept thinking they'd fix things. Instead, I'm out $300, but I'm very happy with DAP. I just upgraded tonight to the Unlimited License and ready to use it on several of my sites.

I need to make up for all the lost time screwing around with Magic Members.

DAP is excellent - I've also had great luck with the new SiteManPro WP plugin - both are great and the support has been great too.

I just finished creating my fourth membership site with DAP. It now takes me about 25 minutes to set up DAP. (MagicMembers took days.)

      Happy days are here again.

I'm having some serious problems with Magic Members atm.

Getting error messages when people try and register.

    How USELESS is that?!?!?!

I purchased an unlimited license too and thinking it was a HUGE mistake.

Not much has changed in 2 years.

I have literally sunk weeks into making MM work for our simple membership site. Worst designed and slowest admin interface EVER. It is seriously complicated to do even really simple stuff.

After more than 20 support tickets I also feel like I am debugging the platform for them.

Unfortunately for us it was the only option at the time that fully integrated with Eway (our payment provider). But now I am seriously wondering if it would have been easier to change our entire payment gateway instead!

The website and marketing material makes this platform look pretty good. But you definitely don't want to judge this book by it's cover.

Nanacast supports eWay and 1-click upsells. I don't recommend using it with WordPress, though. As a standalone system, it's time tested solution for info marketers and very robust. Merchant Account Information. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

          Thanks for the info Jesus,

Do you know if DAP integrates with SINGLE opt-in Aweber lists?
Wishlist Member does not, which is why we couldn't go with it.

            Hi Stuckster,

            >>Do you know if DAP integrates with SINGLE opt-in Aweber lists?<<
If you use the Aweber sign up form on your site (for free signups), then you can set up Aweber to add the subscriber to DAP on the back-end.

So the subscriber flow is Aweber-to-DAP.

In that case, yes, your Aweber list can be single-optin and DAP will integrate with that.

            See http://DigitalAccessPass.com/documen...aweber-to-dap/

If deliverability is your main concern, then you can also integrate DAP with Amazon SES. See http://DigitalAccessPass.com/documen...s-integration/

            Hope this helps.

Not sure since I use GetResponse. Ask them at Nanacast - Powered By Kayako eSupport and they'll let you know.

              Thanks guys,

We would prefer DAP-to-Aweber since customers provide their email address when subscribing to membership levels anyway. So sign ups to our email mail lists need to be a transparent part of the membership registration process.

"Now, if the flow is from DAP-to-Aweber, and are using email parsing to integrate DAP and Aweber, then your Aweber list will always be double-opt-in (as per Aweber policy, nothing to do with DAP)."

Hmm... Magic Member has managed to provide MagicMember-to-Aweber with single opt-in lists (I know because this is our current setup). So I presume it must be possible for DAP too?

    Stuckster,

If a third-party program like DAP adds a subscriber via the backend directly to Aweber, Aweber forces a double-optin on the subscriber (just because the sign up didn't come from their own sign up form).

That's how it's been for a while, unless this changed recently.

Hmm ok. All I know is we have entered our Aweber web form ID and list name into MagicMember and with that information it is able to process registrations for new members and add them to our Aweber mailing list at the same time, transparently. ie: the user does not realise they are being added to an Aweber list when they pay for access to a membership level, nor do they have to confirm their sign up.

Maybe we are talking about the same thing in a round about kind of way. (?)

I know this thread is old but I have to say that this plugin is not worth it.
Been having lots of issues with it and support actually is terrible.
I tried to integrate social login (which is a very basic feature for any coder) and its a pain in the ass to adapt it. They even dont offer support on this.
    Very very bad.
