the problem with some of them I've tried is that when i go into graphic design mode it adds a lot of random code, and I have to go into html code mode to clean it up. It's really annoying. Are the ones recommended like that too?

I use html-kit for all my website coding - but then I write my websites in code, rather than using a graphical editor. Works for me!

It's free and you can download it here:

    Kompozer

You tube has free video how to use it.

The best editor I've found for landing page, ajax and php is Aptana Studio. Aptana

Alternatly, there is also the Coffee Cup HTML editor. Two editors in one really. Visual and code. No server side anything but it does come with a lot of javascripts. You can buy it but the free one is unlimited. CoffeeCup - HTML Editor, Flash & Web Design Software

There is also html-kit. But I found the interface a bit annoying. Still good though, Welcome to Chami.com

    Hope that helps

If you actually know html and are looking for free, I'd advise something like Note Tab light. Free Coffee cup also isn't bad and I find html kit useful at times.

Every wysiwyg editor I've ever tried has added unwanted code somewhere... so I can't help you there.

Instead of Nvu, try downloading the free bug fix for it at
    http://www.kompozer.net/download.php
Its way better without all the bugs from what I've seen, and it's also free!

Then there's two other of my most favorites, depending on what you want to be doing online, which are Dreamweaver by Adobe and XSitePro 2 by Intellimon..

    Check em out!

    Hello,
NVU. is a freebie that is very user friendly. I hear microsoft frontpage has a new suite of software thats around 100.00 dollars. If you are going to do some serious web building I would use Dream Weaver. It isn't free but worth the money if you are doing a lot of web designing.

I love dreamweaver myself and I have a link to an OEM site that you can get dreamweaver for about $140 dollars less than retail. I'd also recommend if you are going to use Dreamweaver that you pick up a copy of "Dreamweaver CS4 - The Missing Manual". Here is the site that I bought my copy from:

softwaremedia.com (awesome customer service, my order shipped same day no problems)

You can also check pricegrabber.com to make sure its the lowest price at the time you are purchasing.

      Hope this helps !

Kompozer is the updated version of NVU. NVU is no longer supported so don't use it. Kompozer will do just about everything you need. I have used HTML-Kit as well. It is okay.

Li - for a free html editor Komposer is very good and supports CCS. In the past I've used frontpage and dreamweaver - both very good but not free. The only problem I've had with Komposer is when I use the publish function. I thought it would be great to have design and publishing in one prgram, ala frontpage. It publishes okay but some links get broken and don't work even though the html looks ok - spent a few hours troubleshooting, doing several test pages, etc. - Now I use an ftp program for the upload - problem solved. Hope this helps.

I am using dreamweaver which is very good but in one of my course material the person was showing how to use Kompozer and its free and not bad for what it can do.

I have also heard good things about coffeecup.

Pagebreeze is another one but I have never used it.

    I hope this helps.

I use NVU. It's the follow on from Frontpage. It's a wysiwyg editor which means you don't need to know html. Also it allows you to add html coding very easily in just 2 clicks. Great for adding payment buttons and video linking.

The best thing about it, is that it's free.

I see a lot of people recommending visual editors like Dreamweaver - you can get some great results with these, but the reason I work in code is that I can keep it clean that way. Then I break the main page into code modules and use server side includes to create all the pages in the website - that plus a CSS page and you can create new pages, change content, etc all with the same look and feel with very little effort. Visual editors I find add too much "surplus" code and then you get a website full of unique pages that all have to be changed independently.

But I'm not a dreamweaver expert... That's just been my experience!
