Not really jazzed up about it so far but I'm still digging through what's new.

Here is the complete list of updated features from WP.

I noticed the new admin bar at the top of the screen that shows from the frontend when logged in. Not sure I like it though.

Just a FYI to everybody - if you login to your wordpress blogs you'll notice that 3.1 has been released.

I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU DO NOT UPGRADE.

I tried upgrading our development server. Seemed to go fine, however the login form broke. So as soon as we logged out of wordpress, we couldn't log back in!

Luckily we had a full backup of the dev site and it's only seen by my staff, so no harm was done while the site was rendered somewhat useless for 20 mins.

Wait a few weeks until all the major bugs have been worked out before installing this patch. It seems way more experimental than usual. There's several blogs reporting that is actually breaks almost all the popular plugins.

Here's just a few examples of the problems people are having with this new release:

    Common problems in WordPress 3.1 | sillybean.net
    If Pages Return A 404 After WordPress 3.1 Upgrade | dre.im
wordpress 3.1 - How to fix broken upgrade to 3.1 - WordPress - Stack Exchange
Issue 358 - wp-e-commerce - Permalink problems in WordPress 3.1 - Project Hosting on Google Code

EDIT: Yes I realize people are posting solutions to the bugs already, but I'm actually quite angry that they've released an 'upgrade' which seems more like an unstable release.

Just upgraded all seems to be OK. Would like to get rid of that Admin bar on my home page though. I checked the option in edit profile to remove it but it's still there on my site's home page when logged in.

    Likes:

    Updated Linking Tool

Really like the new Link tool options! The ability to select from any post, page, category or tag within your site with point-and-click was long overdue, but very welcome to see

Reduced clutter on the post editor
I'm a big fan of "screen options" which has been there since version 3 or earlier. It allows you to turn off lots of the boxes in the post and page editors that you never use. Things like "Author", "Post Revisions", "Custom Fields", "Send Trackbacks" etc..

Now that Wordpress has done this automatically, I expect many more people will start using "Screen Options" to streamline their workflow and that's a good thing. They might also discover that you can drag and drop the boxes and place them anywhere you like onscreen. For example, I like to drag the "publish" box just above my "SEO!" box for handy access.
    Dislikes:

    New Floating "Admin" toolbar
I'm not crazy about the admin toolbar or the fact that you can't turn it off from the toolbar itself (as of the initial release).

Anyone wishing to turn the toolbar off needs to go to the "Users" manager then click on your username and then uncheck the options for "Show admin bar"
    Wishlist for 3.1.1:

    Link attributes inspector
I would have really liked to have seen 3.1 go one step further with the enhanced linking tool to include a "link attributes" inspector. This would allow the content editor to easily manage things like nofollow, title, class, style, etc. while they are creating or editing links within content. I'm hoping they can get this into 3.1.1 or I'm going to code it in myself with my CE4.1 Beta release of my theme.

Add a "View/Close" option to the "Admin Bar"
It should be super easy to add a "View" menu to the new admin toolbar which will allow easier management of when the admin bar is displayed rather than having to go all the way into your user profile to change the settings.

So far updated some sites and all good. Have to test it in DEV mode to see how my themes react to it.

Wish me luck. I probably need it.

I upgraded to Wordpress 3.1 on all of my blogs and it works great... no problems that I've noticed.

I especially like the new feature for push button internal linking. It'll save a load of time and help the SEO, plus help promote other blog posts even more.

I am sure there will be a bug or two as there usually are in a new Wordpress release. But this is the actual version of the release, not the beta, so I would say it's safe to upgrade.

I notice admin activities become very slow in the backend.

Though front end is not affected but editing, previewing become slower..

I LOVE the new admin bar area which is a great addition. It just gives me more convenience to everything and it looks modern. Wordpress needs to keep bringing out minor features.

There is a noticeable effect on the speed of displaying the sites, after changing to 3.1

Or perhaps it's just me loading up too many plugins onto the control panel.

I upgraded and in the post section, i no longer have the custom settings option (i.e., set thumbnails, short-excerpt for a custom widget, etc.) - i searched everywhere i could and cant find an option to add back this section.

anyone else see this or have a fix. thanks.

just discovered the very small, light grey, blend in to the upper right corner "Screen Options" tab - when posting you can click there for missing sections such as "custom field" "excerpts" etc.

I upgraded and generally liked the improvements. Ran into a problem when I was checking AWSTATS search queries and decided to investigate the keyword posts. Everthing seemed fine but several of my older posts with Amazon links were getting 404 errors (for the Amazon links). Further investigation indicated that almost all the Amazon links had 404 errors. It stumped me for a couple of days before I found out that the permalink structure needed to be updated. If you run into this error just update the options and it should work again.
