HostGator, Bluehost, Dreamhost or Pair.com

Does anyone have experience with these hosting firms? Which ones to avoid, and which is the best for price/performance?

Are they able to upgrade as you expand, or do you need to plan to shift hosts after a few months of growth?

I used to use JustHost.. I just wasn't happy with them. I found their customer service was unsatisfactory and I often had errors with cPanel.

I switched to FatCow a few months ago and I haven't looked back since.

I also had problems with JustHost and would often get Cpanel errors and MySQL errors. Also had alot of downtime. Using Hostgator now and very satisfied.

HostGator is the best in my opinion. You can try them your first month for 1 cent and the customer service is great.

I've heard good things about HostGator in the forums. I personally use SharkSpace. They're pretty good.

I am using Hostgator and their customer service is exceptional. They are also one of the bigger player in the market and you might wish to consider them.

      Hello,
I have used Bluehost and have been very pleased with their customer service. It's currently the only hosting service I have.

I've been hosted with dreamhost for 6 six years. It's a very good host, but it's not a very cheap one.

Now I'm with Hostgator, which is probably even better and they have very affordable hosting packages. Their service is amazing as well.

I have been using JustHost for the last 3 years. It is still as good as it was at the time i start. My sites were never down and the customer service is pretty good.

Hi, l have been with Hostgator and they do have very good backup service and very cheap hosting up to 10 websites for $10 a month.

      But...

      they do have some drawbacks.

      • Their email service can break down occasionally, but you can easily get around that by pasting your email onto a page.

      • And it isn't unlimited number of pages for a basic package, it is 100 pages then you will get a "reached your limit" warning.

It can also be a bit tricky getting the hang of Cpanel, etc, but backup support is excellent.

And once you have mastered it, sky's the limit.

      Shane

P.S. Bluehost is virtually the same except you pay up front. This is a bigger investment up front, but you do save money over Hostgator over a year, and you don't have the monthly $10 taken out of your account each month?

I will back up the knownhost recommendation. Especially in terms of linux VPS. There is no one quite like them.

Yep - Its ashamed Hostgator gets love - I did use them to at one time - that was a lesson learned..

Wiredtree is top notch as well ... so many good resources folks do not know about..

Hands down to Hostgator and Bluehost. Both of them are serving me pretty well for years now and when it comes to shared hosting services they are the best IMO.

If you are looking for a host, feel free to consider Bolt Web Hosting. We have a WSO here that makes our hosting cheaper than HostGator (and pretty much any other host for that matter), see my sig for details.

    /end shameless plug

HostGator was always good when I was with them (I had various accounts over a 3 year period with them). But I never pushed their servers too hard, so I never had the problems you read about with them suspending accounts.

I'll chip in for Hostgator and Bluehost. I have accounts on both. I use Hostgator for reseller hosting and Bluehost for conventional domain hosting. To date, I am happy with both services.
