Smackdown: GoDaddy vs. Namecheap

A few months back, I started choosing NameCheap over GoDaddy for my domains. Even when a GoDaddy .com domain is a buck or two cheaper (with coupon codes) I still tend to go with NameCheap. I'm even thinking of moving the domains I still have at GoDaddy over to NameCheap. But it's not because I've personally had any problems with GoDaddy, but because I'd heard one too many horror stories about them. On the other hand, I can't remember hearing a lot of bad things about NameCheap.

But I still see people recommending GoDaddy. Like I said, I've never really had a problem with them. And, hey, I like to save a buck as much as the next IMer.

So my question is, in your experience, which is the better domain name provide, GoDaddy or NameCheap? Which one do you think is the better choice?

    • I ROFLed. This is the first post I ever saw in favor of 1and1 (except the people who say it's good as the price is cheaper)

    • Worst service and registrar I've dealt with.

Their interface is BROKEN - so when you go to register a domain - if you already have an account - you dont get to buy new ones with privacy on - from the jump.

You have to go and have it added/enabled later - sucks.

... but - great to get a domain and then trx ...

GoDaddy's irritating upsells and sneaky jive of sniping domain names you search is lame. Whatever that term is they use for "temporarily" selling a domain to a a priveledged insider domainer "domain sampling" ? - of domains you search ... makes me need a shower ...

I like name.com and namecheaps smooth nice and lean interface.... however; if you want to do some private nameservers and stuff with diverse IP hosting - it was problematic.

I was a big fan of netfirms too until they just did a DNS Manager interface re write and conversion last week - its now ... as my canadian friend so aptly calls it - a dog's breakfast.

I have a bunch [ not 1900 ... that got deindex LOZ .. ] but enough ... to where i want them registered diversly across multiple registrars with multiple ownerships and privacy and private / custom nameservers.

My take - they all suck at something - some more than others - and some OUTLOUD.

  • I'm a Namecheap guy.

I pay $9.28 per domain so it's not like there's a huge difference. Also, Namecheap offers a free year of WhoIs privacy. Gotta love that!
  • wow... $9.28? i pay $4.99 then $8.99 per year thereafter.

1and1.com give you free privacy reg, for as long as you are with them.
  • I have hundreds of domains on both Godaddy and Name, powerful and easy to use
  • GoDaddy has too many upsells so I use Namecheap.
  • I have never used Namecheap, so there is absolutely nothing I can say about them, but I do have quite a bit of experience with Godaddy.

The complaints I hear about Godaddy generally fall into 2 categories: inflated renewal prices and too many upsells.

Personally, I've never been charged extra for a renewal from Godaddy. In fact, I get them for the same sale price at which I originally purchased my first one, no coupon needed. $5.49 for .com and $.69 for .info. Of course, I usually buy in bulk, I always buy at least 2 years at a time, I've been with them since 2006, and I have a lot of domains with them, so maybe those are all contributing factors.

Try building a relationship with someone inside the company instead of talking to phone operators. I have a go-to guy I always talk to (have had his actual desk number, not an extension, for probably 4 years now) that actually knows me by name when I call. And btw, I've never had to call because I had a problem. It's always to either buy new domains or ask a question, and he has always given me a quick, straight-up answer to any questions.

If I'm ordering online, the upsells don't bother me at all because I've registered enough domains with them over the years to know where the 'No Thanks' buttons are, so I get to the checkout page pretty quickly.

Keep in mind that Godaddy is still basically a software company that essentially makes it profits from selling services in addition to domains.

It's odd to me that people here would complain about the upsells, though, because that's exactly what most successful IMer's do. I can't count how many times I have bought a WSO and had to go through 5 or 6 extra pages before being directed to the download page. You know those reeeeeaaaallly long sales pages that take you 15-20 mouse rolls to get to the bottom where the No Thanks button is?

The one definite advantage I see for Namecheap is the free Whois privacy. Very occasionally Godaddy will offer that, but not very often. I personally don't use it, though, so that's not a factor for me.
  • Lots of horror stories from 1and1 and a couple of personal ones I have gone through.

Just be sure you don't miss any renewal dates by accident even by a few days, because unlike Godaddy and Namecheap (I'm more inclined to go with namecheap), you may be requested to pay a lot more to get your domain active again than ICANN requires per their registrar guidelines.

Sometimes, what should be a $10 renewal quickly turns into an $80 renewal with 1and1

    Just my experience.

    • huh? how you work that out J, bro?

1and1.com charge $4.99 then $8.99 for their domain names thereafter per year.

are you referring to the upsells mate?

  • just got note from 1and1.com
    ==========

  • This thread was set up to discuss the pros and cons of Godaddy vs. Namecheap, so why is 1and1 even mentioned here?

Any other place on the forum asking about wehosting/domain registration, I would welcome the opinions, but it seems this thread has now been officially hijacked.
