Which hosting company do you recommend?

Hi there,

I am currently having problems with my hosting company.

In your experience which company offers the best hosting for multiple domains (circa 10-30) with cpanel and good technical support.

Also would you recommend shared hosting or moving to a VPS or dedicated server set up?

Your comments would be appreciated

Thanks.

I highly recommend hostgator -> Web Hosting Services, Reseller Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Servers by HostGator

Great support, no problems with them so far.

I personally use business hosting plan

If you are considering dedicated server you may possibly wish to check out Amazon S3. One thing I learned; is to keep my domain registration separate from the webhost provider. If the host shut me down, I can immediately setup another in a different webhost with minimal down time.

Wihout reservation I recommend HostGator as my first choice. I also have a couple of sites on BlueHost and Scala Hosting.

I have used the first two for years and never had an issue of any kind. I have begun using Scala just this year and it seem very good as well.

I use the three different hosts so that I have sites from totally different locations whenever I do any linking.

I have always had shared hosting with no problems either.

I host close to 80 different domains/sites at HostGator, so this is another vote for them.

A VPS or Dedicated Server is always a better option than shared hosting. It also costs more, so you need to weigh your needs and benefits vs. the price. I use one of the HG Reseller accounts with shared hosting and have never had a problem.

    Just my 2¢

I was interested in this thread because I'm a current HostGator customer and I'm starting to get a little concerned about my site performance. According to the graph of page load times in my Google Webmasters account, my page load times have been increasing predictably over time. The average load time for my page is now up to 3,800 miliseconds. My site got hit HARD from whatever Google did to their algorithm on 5/6/2011. Prior to 5/6 i was averaging between 250 and 300 impressions per day according to Google Webmasters. From 5/6 to today, I am now averaging about 25 to 30 impressions per day. I can't imagine what the problem is. I have lots of high quality, original content that I wrote and developed myself. I don't have tons of spammy backlinks or anything like that. I have heard that the Google update may now be considering load times as a factor in determining rankings.

Can others share what kinds of response times Google Webmasters Tools are reporting for their sites? I don't have anything to compare my load / response times to in order to determine if something is out of whack.

    Thanks!

I have always used 1and1. They aren't the best in regards to hardware failure (you have to just create a new server), but they are cheap and have 24/7 customer service. Make sure you back up your stuff though. You can't beat their prices though and you manage everything through remote desktop.

i got myself an awardspace hosting in the October raffle Last Year... and i have had no major problems with them... apart from a two day blackout some months ago, because there was an attack on some websites... so they had to shut down services, moreover the offer some great unmatched plans. For $19.90, they gave their highest plan available, which includes:
-1 year unlimited hosting(unlimited space, domains, databases, everything unlimited)
-and have received 99.7% uptime on the lower side and 100% on the upside.
-almost instant customer support with a very decent staff.

on the whole i rate the a 4.8 over 5...

Domains through GoDaddy and Hosting through Hostgator. Hands down the best I've used.

If you have a lot of domains the HostGator Aluminum reseller package for $24.95 per month is great if you have some domains that you would like to have separate IP's as not to muck things up to much.

I also have the baby croc package (started out with it) and loaded it up with domains and went on to get the Aluminum reseller package so I have both… highly recommended.

Also.. a vote for having domains and hosting separate….

This is starting to sound like a huge HostGator promo-fest. Truth is, I've hosted with GoDaddy, I've hosted with a South African company, and now all my hosting is with HostGator. They're not 100% perfect all of the time - some of the posters mention slow loading times - but one thing is for sure: their service/support is fantastic. They also have an excellent template library - if that's important to you.

I will dissent and recommend Dreamhost.

I have 30-odd domains hosted there with more than 75GB of content on-line. Never had an issue. We were just discussing at WHT someone who has over 1TB (yes, terabyte!) of content in a shared hosting account there.

HG may also be fine - I just have no experience with them, while I've been with DH for 5 years.

For VPS, check my VPS recommendation site: vpsadvice.com - based entirely on VPS providers I have used.

HostGator is the most powerful hosting company because all the IM GURUS use it and highly recommend to others.

Just acting now by opening an account in HostGator and you will not being disappointed.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that I have some concerns about my page load time and the server load of my box at HostGator. I did a little more investigating.

I have a simple wordpress site installed and configured at HostGator and another simple wordpress site installed at another provider. According to Google Webmaster Tools, the average amount of time spent downloading a page at HostGator is 3,800 milliseconds. The average time at the other host is 600 milliseconds.

My experience with HostGator until recently has been fine, but as I mentioned, I have heard that the new Google updates are affecting SERP placement based on response and load times of your pages. knowing this, I'm having a hard time accepting the HUGE difference in response times as reported by Google Webmasters tools.

In addition, using the "uptime" command to look at server load averages on my box, I'm consistently seeing 15 minute load averages of 5 or more. Using mpstat and iostat, I'm seeing the CPU frequently get pegged at 100% utilized. IO Wait times seem particularly high as well.

I have chatted with support twice about my concerns and have asked how HostGator does server capacity planning and how they make decisions about moving customers or addiding capacity when response time and server loads become an issue. I haven't gotten any satisfactory response other than the expected "Our server admins keep an eye on that and correct any issues." On chat rep told me that when load averages get to 10 they flag it for review.

Anyway, I'm interested in getting other users average load times if they're willing to share. Maybe I'll start another thread.

I would take in chackett's advice and consider the load times with Hostgator. From my experience they do have excellent customer service, but maybe because they are so popular, they DO have slow load times. I personally also use Beyond Hosting, particularly for Prosper202 tracking of my ad campaigns and there is no comparison in terms of load times. Yet, of course, I pay $45 a month for the service (VPS), compared to $9.95 for HostGator. I am currently using a Hostgator shared server but the amount of traffic that comes through there is very small.

It may not matter to you now, but in terms of building a long-term niche based system, these are things you need to consider.

Look for dual servers and load balancing for speed issues. (2 servers on and 2 back-ups off line at all times). Few shared hosts do that. Powweb does, but has no c-panel. There are others... Google.
Dedicated servers? Why not use who a ton of hosts rent servers from for shared hosting packages? 'The Planet'

Dealing directly with a server farm is (to me) much preferable to using someone that rents servers from server farms).

I've used ASmallOrange for years now without a problem. Great support every time I've needed them. The pricing isn't bad but it isn't unlimited if that matters. From what I understand "HostGator did buy them out a bit ago but it might be on paper only. If HG actually hosts all the servers now I might as well move over to them and save some money.
