The emails are not handled by a DAP server.

They are handled by your own server.

Which means that basically you will not be able to use it for large scale lists unless you go with a more expensive and complex hosting arrangement that allows a high volume of emails.

James is right. You'll be sending the emails from your server.

I've worked with large and enterprise-level mail servers in the past. In my past experience, (and this depends on my list, niche and content) I normally expect amazing mind-boggling deliverability rates for the 1st month or so. Then it slowly starts going downhill fast. Within 1-3 months, I'll be junked by Gmail. After 6 months or so, I'll be junked by the Big 4 (Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo) in that order. These times are based on past lists that sent non-IM, informational content (no selling at all) to double optin subscribers on a daily basis.

In order to remain whitelisted with the Big 4, you'll need to setup bounce relays, SPF records and Domain Keys. You may also have to pay for 3rd party 'whitelisting' services like Goodmail. Yes...it's as dirty as it sounds.

Running your own mail server can be very profitable...but it's a real headache. Not recommended for the faint of heart or non-techie.

Stick to Aweber, GetResponse, etc. It's worth paying for this service unless you're sending a tiny amount of emails (500 or less per month). But even that is free at MailChimp. Go figure.
