For shopping based model (lots of products, like a store), use Magento. Big companies use it. It's free and open source.

For anything else, use Delavo. See comparison chart here: Comparison Table

I just started using DLGuard. It took me a while to set it up, but it seems to work pretty well for what I need.

I used to use Big Commerce for my eCommere sites. I loved how easy it was to set up and manage the site design, products, prices, invoices and delivery labels etc.. However, with it being an all in one managed solution, it costs a bit more than standalone carts.

    Cheers,

    MW

If you're selling physical products (as I do) then I can recommend Magento. It's open source and is easy to install. You can configure a lot of things yourself from the back-end and if you know PHP then you can do some pretty powerful things with it.

Also, it's very well known and there's lots of talented people out there who can give you a great design with all the functionality you want.

One final point I really like are the Magento extensions that have been written for the product. I've used the following:

    Free Tabs - FREE
    OneStepCheckout - an awesome product
Reviews Reminder - automatically sends out product review requests to customer who've bought from you.

The list of extensions is endless.

And, like a previous poster said, a lot of big companies are using it.

I created a website with Magento. I used the free version and customized it myself. I was able to do 90% of it myself. I used freelancer.com to have a couple of things customized that were over my head. For a professional looking website I would go with Magento.

No matter which one you choose you will have to devote some time and energy to get it to do what you want it to do.

In previous years I used zencart, which is a bit outdated. This year I switched to Prestashop.

Web 2.0 technology and easy to configure. It takes me half the time to set up a shop now, compared to zencart.

PrestaShop Free Open-Source e-Commerce Software for Web 2.0

P.S. Magento is to BIG in my opinion for the majority of shops. For a relatively small shop it's better to go with the other solutions. They need less server resources, and they are easier to customize.
