royalty free image downloads?

where can i find the best quality royalty free image downloads online? Can I use pics from google images for my website??

    Just to clarify one point, the term Royalty Free does not mean the image is copyright free, sites selling licensed images use that term I believe to indicate you don't have to pay a per use fee.

    There are a few depositories of free images that still have certain use stipulations, here one free image search engine, an important source of "free" photos is Morge File.

    Just like Google books, where they are trying to put every book in the world online, google images is just an index of the internet, don't mistake that these images can be freely used, odds are a small site will slip by, but there are horror stories of webmasters having to pay hundreds of dollars for misusing a single image. You would be wise to not use images sold by stock images houses, they are most likely to have image detectives lurking about.

      I've found that Photorack has the most professional looking and free stock photos I've seen (without looking terribly hard).

    Never use an image that is sold to any stock images websites. For sure you will be reprimand by using their images.

      Hi Scuba,

      I just did a search on Google for "public domain pictures" and it brought up some websites that have free stock photos. Here is a link to the top listing:

      Public Domain Pictures - Free Stock Photos

      This website has 14,463 pictures.

      It says,"If you intend to use an image you find here for commercial use, please be aware that some photos do require a model or property release. Pictures featuring products should be used with care."

      Here is another link using search terms "public domain photos."

      I personally have used istock photos, which are very cheap and you can find some really nice pictures. Here is their link:

      Wherever you get your pictures from, be sure to read and follow the terms and conditions. For instance, at istock, they have stipulations like you can only use a picture on one website or one place at a time. Also, if using the photos for print materials, brochures, etc., they limit how many copies you can make, but it is a huge amount, something like 100,000.
