Hi Warriors, I've been hearing stuff about backing up your blogs content and database
before upgrading to 3.2.

Thing is, I don't know much about that stuff

That's why I like WP

Anyway, any good plugins I can use for this? I'm using Wordpress 3.1.4.

    There are a few...

WP Twin works well, but I use backup buddy by iThemes. Both are very, very, very easy to install and don't have huge learning curves.

Why backup your wordpress blog when you can just backup your whole hosting Control Panel and have everything backed up all at once.

This is interesting, but I'd like to know more because I'm not super tech savvy.

I have a VPS account with Hostgator. Can you elaborate and tell me how this could work for me? I like the idea of it. Thanks.

Try this with your wordpress blog - back up your cpanel. Then delete your wordpress blog. Then restore your cpanel. Tell me your blog stays exactly the same as it was before...

Truly backing up a wordpress blog is not an easy thing to do manually. That's why we created WP Twin to CLONE a blog - meaning every setting right down to the permalink structure, comments, plugins, etc. are cloned perfectly. That's the only way to get a true and complete replica.

Backing up your cpanel won't, ftp'ing your site to your local hard drive won't, and even popular free "backup" solutions won't create an exact replica of your blog.

Oh and one more thing: you asolutely do not want to use a WORDPRESS plugin to back up your WORDRESS blog. That's like putting a key to a safe inside the safe. Ideally you want your back up solution to be independent of wordpress. That's why we built WP TWIN as a script, not a plugin.

Co-creator of WP Twin. Perhaps the most expensive yet most reliable wordress cloning tool on the market. We've definitely been used more successfully than all other options :)

That's a great answer, Jason, thanks for that. You make some great points.

I have used WP Twin a handful of times, and it worked flawlessly except for when I used it to clone and back up one of my sites.

I actually submitted my support ticket on that one issue 6 days ago and have not heard anything back from anyone. Please let me know if you can help me on this.

Thanks for the replies, is there a way to backup everything through FTP?

Cpanel looks too critical, I think I may break something..

Using the Export feature built into wordpress is the easiest way to back up your entire site. If your site crashes, you can just reinstall Wordpress and import the XML file that you exported and it will restore everything.

I am a big fan of WPTwin. Works great for 'cloning' sites as well.

WP Twin is a good product, but if you want to try a free alternative then try the Duplicator plugin. It is very new and still in beta, but I've used it with success to migrate a couple of sites.

    Billy,

Apologies for the missed support ticket. We are currently migrating WP Twin into a new support system so it might've got lost in the shuffle. If you could PM your email Billy I'll get somebody from our staff on your request right away.

    thanks,
    Jason
