I suggest making a website in that niche with informative articles something good that would want to make them subscribe to your list.

It would be a Can-Spam act violation to just send messages to a bunch of email addresses you have no relationship with.

The more correct way to go is to get the owner of an email list to mail on your behalf, this might be the publisher of a ezine periodical or the owner of some other list you can rent for around 10 cents a name, NextMark.com has a huge database of email and postal mail lists. Some web marketers have ended up getting more profitable results from old fashioned postcard mailings to these lists than PPC ads.

Rather than slog through lists of churches, it's usually best to target the organization head and obtain an endorsement for your product. Then you can hit up the churches with endorsement in hand. Here's a list of some major religious websites:

Listing of official Denominational Web sites

Also bible schools and religious institutes are good sources to find targeted lists.

  can-spam does not forbid unsolicited email, as long as it conforms to their rules (no forging of headers, honoring opt-out requests, etc).
  
  Be carefull if you try this though - hosts don't care if it IS can-spam compliant, they will shut you down if they get spam complaints.

You're the second person in a row whose advice was based on a misreading of the first post.

The OP said nothing about unsolicited mass emails, nor email opt-ins (as the first person's advice was based on). It is not a violation of anything to send a piece of mail to a church.

I'm not sure if you mean physical addresses, or getting church-goers to sign up to your email list... but...

If you're looking for physical addresses, then you could start with Christian Church Directory : USA Churches and pick those apart... then I'd suggest direct mail .

If you want to spread out further, I'd develop a good relationship with those churches and ask them about other establishments in the area and if they could pass on the contact information.

It sounds like you're going a little offline anyway, so why not try direct mail?

Without knowing more about your venture (for good reason!) it's a little tougher to make the best recommendation, but hopefully that helps a little

It's not your fault people jump in with advice based on only skimming the first post. You said "mailing addresses" and "mailing address", and didn't mention email at all.

The only way you could have been more clear would be to preface it by explaining "I'm about to ask a question about mailing addresses, so when I do, please understand I do not mean email addresses; I mean mailing addresses, which is still a thing".

Send a letter in the mail. Get the list off infousa.com or usadata.com (which I prefer, costs way less with same accuracy)

I agree with webapex - don't just email a list without having a relationship - OR, better yet, rent a mailing list or buy a solo ad from someone who already has a list and send all the traffic to an opt in page so then you build your list.

It's not uncommon that I will buy a solo ad, get 500 clicks and att 250+ subscribers to my list.

Glad I could help Ace...

But for apex and super13.... I'm not too familiar with the CAN-SPAM Act so I don't want to make any recommendations that would violate that.

It seems that it's essentially saying 'don't write to people you don't know asking for business'... but how else then, do you build the relationship?

This totally isn't my thread, but any insight would surely be appreciated by all
