Killer Marketing Book - Jay Abraham's "Getting Everything You Can Out Of All You've Got"

I'm about halfway through Jay Abraham's "Getting Everything You Can Out Of All You've Got" and I've got to say it could be THE best book I've ever read on marketing. It's filled with proven principles that I know will become a big part of the heart and soul of my future businesses. The book also contains timeless tactics.

You get advice that came out of 7 billion dollars in profit that Abraham is responsible for.

You can get it on Amazon used for just a few bucks.

        Grab a copy of "The E-Myth".

        What you will find with Gerber (and Abraham) is that you'll immediately discover where so many of today's "marketing geniuses" got so much of their material.

          ...Yeah you're right... USP, risk reversal, making a fortune on the backend and all is nothing new. Coming from the horse's mouth it's articulated really well though.

          (Even Abraham's Strategy of Preeminence has been repackaged in a few products I've had.)

            That book can be life changing. I've read a ton of books from everyone and anyone but the first time I read Jay's book everything clicked. I read it every couple of weeks and every time I get new ideas from him.

            There are few things so inexpensive as books that can be life changing as his is.

            Sadly, most people will just stick to special reports, etc paying way too much for something they can find in a used $6 book.

      Oh man, great discussion. I'm a Jay junkie.

      I was just in Orlando on vacation for the past week and a half (live in California) and I took his Mastermind Marketing seminar (from 94) along. Originally sold for $5,000 (which was alot in 94). Seemingly "outdated" by todays standards (you can buy it for $30-50 on ebay). But nobody really "gets it".

      The "Getting Everything" book is a great intro to his mindset and methods. But you have to listen to his seminars and immerse yourself. Its easy to waste time on books or little reports. But his seminars are the main deal, very meaty and powerful.

      It boggles my mind that he could be paid a million dollars in one weekend for a seminar (say 200 people at $5,000). When the average marketing author (or college professor), they'll never see that money in a lifetime.

      You stand back and think about it...all these people out struggling, trying to make tenure, or something. Or trying to get promotions. And Jay goes out and does seminars, raises his prices (some were $15 or $25 k and people gladly pay).

      It's funny, in college, they teach that you can't raise prices for products or services. Or it's hard to.

      Jay knows the truth, marketing prof's only recycle what they "know". They dont know much of anything.

        A few other reviews of his products (ones I have)...

        -"How to get from where you are to where you want to be". Excellent, as another poster said. Maybe his best product because its so clear. Its a 6 week coaching program. He walks you through step by step....you start with strategic planning questions, then through his 3 ways to grow a business model, then you add layers on top of that. Then finally, your optimal business strategy that you've honed down. Pure gold.

        -Mastermind Marketing (Aug 1994). He did a bunch of masterminds in the early to mid 90's. I think 10-20 in the US, UK, and Australia? This is his mainstay seminar. I think very overlooked in this internet/pdf age. Only $30 or something now. But alot of information not in his books (or his tony robbins interview which is excellent).

        -UK Ex Factor. A little bit sophisticated. Didn't understand the ex factor concept. It was a mastermind seminar, then ex factors on top of it, then the 3rd day?? Too overwhelming if you're just getting started with his concepts.

        -On one of his seminar tapes, he said he read marketing books from the 20's, 30's and 40's, because marketers back then only had the printed word. They knew human nature. I think its important in understanding what he does. He's rooted deep in human nature and how the mind works.

        -Also, listen to his seminar tapes, and hear the audience members. On his protégé seminar (1990), he spends a few hours asking everyone why they're here, what they want to get out of it. They're all self consumed and it hit me....that's how you write a sales letter. That's what you're addressing...what people want.

        -His life story is interesting, on the protégé tapes and in a video set, my life in marketing. Worth listening to if you're already a fan.

        -Tony Robbins interview (powertalk). Excellent summary of his concepts.

        -Strategy Setting Super Summit (from April 03). Kind of rare, I dont see it for sale often. Might be $300-500 when it shows up? But I think its worth it just for his case studies, cd's 7 and 8. He goes through 15 or 20 really good examples of strategy, and makeovers he's done. And other good examples later.

            Yeah, he has quite a few products.

            Mostly I got them out of curiosity. Theres lots of little nuggets not in his "Getting Everything" book or his other books.

            On his protege tapes for example, there's one little comment about...no one had ever sold a seminar for $5 k. Most marketing trainings were $500 before Jay came along. And he commented...but if it performed, you could triple the price (he sold it for $15k, then raised it to $20 k). Gives you a little insight into how he prices things. Makes you question if people know whether their product performs or not.

            Also, he talks about pre emptive marketing. Mentions the Schlitz beer. I probably heard that story 10-15 times from his books or reports before it clicked. Then in his "how to get" course, he mentions it and it finally clicks. It has to do with reason why, and its more about the customers perspective than the story.

            If you're familiar with his stories but they dont click....they might click from listening to other tapes.

              I have one of Jay's 15k seminars on tape, plus his 6 week coaching program in addition to his book (he's got another one coming out this year).

              I want to make sure that I use what I have from him already before buying new stuff - but it is easier said than done.

              There is another side to your skepticism. If you DO have something that is proven to work well, then a higher price point gets you (the buyer) more involved. Or invested.

              You can find Jay's Seminars on usenet for nothing. Imagine how much influence Jay's voice has on a free download. You could put all of Jay's Seminars out for free and the amount of income they'd generate might average 5 cents per listener.

              Or you can ask $100 per mp3 session and the average might get up to $100. Or you can ask $20,000 and the average result might be $300,000. Jay is on track with his knowledge. Over time he's discovered that getting people to pay more for good information is for their own good. Dan Kennedy is one of Jay's best students.

      I totaly agree. Another book that I like is "Go It Alone" by Bruce Judson.

      It's perfect for internet marketers. It talks about how to build a large business in terms of sales while staying small, 1-6 employees.

      Some of the greatest marketing books I've ever discovered over the years... came as a result of hitting up the used book section of those cool little mom and pop books stores....and even the FOR SALE section of my public library.

      I picked up an entire Jay Abraham seminar.....at a bookstore for $5 friggin' bucks in Oregon once. It was a little beat up....but all there!

      Went back a couple weeks later...and they were out of business.

      I wonder why!

      They should have read Jay's sage advice....instead of unloading it for pennies.....and maybe they would have lasted.:rolleyes:

        I had the pleasure of attending one of Jay's courses 'live' last year and his content was not at all what I expected. A real eye opener. He had us read "The Strategy of Preeminence" twice a day for a month. Look it up. In a nutshell it's all about really putting your client's needs before your own and becoming a truly trusted adviser - but that brief description doesn't do it full justice. Once his ethical viewpoint sunk in it changed the way I think about business forever.

        The IM industry could use a good dose of Jay's philosophy IMO. There are too many cowboys around promising whatever they have to to make a sale. You know, the one-off fly-by-nighters. Sure, not only IM is infected, but they seem more prevalent in this industry as it's easy to mimic a trusted source, at least temporarily, and operate from behind a thin but convincing visage. Once they've been outed and the gig's up, it's time to paint another mask and front right up to the people they've just ripped off - looking fresh, smiling, and friendly. Stuff the list-building, there's enough of a newbie market that recurring one-offs can be a full time occupation.

        Have you have ever bought multiple products from the same vendor and been happy every time? Do they under-promise and over-deliver? Do you feel like you trust them? They are in fact a trusted adviser? That's what the receiving end of Jay's philosophy feels like . No tricks. Straight to the core requirements of ethical, sustainable and profitable business strategy.

        I have spent thousands on Jay's offerings over the years and wish I had done so sooner. For me, it was all worth it just to learn how business and human fulfillment can coexist, mesh, overlap and in fact blend together into one.

          I've read his new book, The Sticking Point.

          It's more strategic, more systems oriented than his first book, "Getting Everything You Can". More about working on the business. Also includes thoughts from Rich Scheffren, and Chet Holmes.

          Lots of quotes and sections you'll want to underline and go back to.

          About being the most trusted advisor....I dont think most businesses know their purpose. They think its to make a one time sale. Or make the most they can. Jay's philosophy is be the most trusted advisor in the category. And the money is a byproduct of the value that you give.

    Yeah, my copy of "Getting Everything You Can..." has been propped open so many times the pages are coming out of the spine in little chunks...the front cover has almost ripped off completely from being folded open so much.

    Dog eared...scribbled notes...etc..etc...

    One of a small handful of my hundreds of books that has been read / used that much. It's that important to me.

    Anyone who doesn't have a copy is "missing episodes" as John Delavera would say.

            The two especially good ones in this series (in my opinion) are "No B.S. Wealth Attraction For Entrepreneurs" and "No B.S. Mass Marketing To The Affluent"....my two favorites...but the "Time Management" was also a shift in mindset for me.

            I am a Dan Kennedy fan, but I must say that assessment is right. If you've
            read any one of the No B.S. series you've read all. I think that he is a master
            of re-using the same information with a different target audience and he
            teaches this and does it in his books.

            In the last week I've read ...(No B.S. series)

            1. How To Make Millions With Your Ideas
            2. Wealth Attraction for Entrepreneurs
            3. Business Success

            and they all have the same information, with the same stories about his
            clients as examples, just arranged in a different way.

            I would recommend the Ultimate Sales Letter and Marketing Plan as the
            real no-fluff books. All the others are really 'lead generators'.

            Same for his newsletter; if you've subscribed for a year you have it all.

    I got Jay's book like 10 or 12 years ago.

    He was sending out review copies at the time to marketers and speakers. I find myself still referring to it all these years later. Its really a good distillation of his major marketing principles.

    In 1993 I had the opportunity to spend three days in one of Jay Abraham's marketing bootcamps.

    It was NOT a pitchfest of any kind. And we would start with breakfast at around 7 AM and finish after midnight, then do it again all three days.

    Jay and one of his associates Mac Ross were the only speakers! I don't know how they found the energy.

    What I learned in that program was truly life-changing and business-changing.

    Jay's stuff is very good. And I found Jay to be a truly nice guy who really does care that what he teaches has a positive effect on those who follow his advice. It tickles him when he see someone make a success by using one of his principles.

    Jason - without the E-Myth Revisited I never would have grew my business so fast. It gave me a HUGE revelation that ultimately led to me hiring James and Roy, and then never looking back.

    Highly recommended!

        The best part about this "job" is hearing things like that, so thank you. Last week an old school student of mine grabbed me on the stairs in Marks and Spencers to say thank you for helping him pass his exams and get into college. I don't think you can beat that feeling.

      Not wishing to go against the general trend of this thread, but I'm interested to know what you found so good about this book.

      I bought it last year, based on recommendations from people here, and I can honestly say it was the most dull and unhelpful book I've ever read. I'm not trying to be nasty, but that's the truth. I was hoping for some good business advice, but never found it.

      I found the whole book to be far too theoretical, and far too abstract to be of any use. I couldn't find any practical recommendations that I could use to improve my business.

      I found the conversations with Sarah interesting, but very frustrating. I just couldn't see where he was going with her. He identified problems, but never really solved them in any practical way.

      Did we read the same book? I would be interested to hear what you have to say. What exactly did you get out of it that helped you?

        When I read this book I was doing about $20,000 per month in online profits, but was working FAR too hard.

        I'd tried to outsource many elements of my online business, before hitting various brick walls. The stories with Sarah showed that I wasn't alone, and the struggle she had been through to grow her business DEEPLY resonated with me.

        As the stories continued, I could see the path out of the "entrepreneurial trap" I'd created for myself. I then went ahead and created systems for everything, and hired people to manage and implement these processes.

        Now my profits have increased and my workload has vastly decreased. This book helped show me the way.

        If you're looking for a step by step "system" then you won't find it in this book. BUT if you're an overworked entrepreneur who has ever felt "trapped" by your own business then read this book right now.

        Whenever I have new mentoring clients who struggle to "let go", or who have a profitable business but have hit an invisible glass ceiling, then I insist they read this book.

          Maybe that's why it didn't resonate with me. I'm not making anything like that, but I'm not working that hard either

          I guess I wasn't up against the wall like you, I was looking for advice on how to grow my business without getting into that trap. I don't think it was much good for that.

          Also, I read it directly after reading "The 4-Hour Work Week," and it was a big let-down compared to that. The stuff about outsourcing didn't excite me as T4HWW had already put all that in my mind, and had presented it in a far more entertaining and stimulating way. When I read about it in The E-Myth, I was yawning over his dull presentation, and not learning anything that T4HWW hadn't covered.

          I guess I'll have to wait until I'm earning big bucks, then read it again

    Just have to say that Jay's book mentioned here is probably the most read and reread book in my collection and like Kyle indicated, I've learned much more about marketing from him than I ever did in any college marketing course.

    Oh, and Gerber's stuff is great too!

      Jay has another book coming out this year.

      I consider "Getting Everything..." to be essential reading
      and I often tell people to read it - even though I don't
      think it's an incredible book at all. Jay would even admit
      that a lot of his thinking is borrowed from the old masters,
      so depending on how many other marketing books you've
      read you'll find his ideas to be revelations, or not.

      Lots of other authors are influenced by Jay and he borrowed
      liberally from those who came before - in fact that's more
      or less how he defines a marketing genius. That he has
      done so well teaching and practicing what are really very
      common-sense - but not always obvious - business principles
      is proof of how powerful they are.

      This books is great and really helps explaining that you can totally control how your customer interact and their customer experience with your business.

      I'd bet if you spent the money and bought all of Dan's books you couldn't go wrong. In addition, pick up Jay's book and you'll have a great marketing experience.

      I have a whole stack of Jay Abraham seminars and other stuff and the $20 book really does include all the major principles he covers.

      I think most people who read it undervalue the information because they haven't paid $5,000+ for it (as you would if you went to one of his seminars).

      All the information is there in that book although most of Jay's seminars are about APPLYING that information which is exactly what you need to do with the information from the book.

      The book Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've
      Got
      is a great introduction to Jay Abraham's work.

      I have most of his other books and programs and by far
      the best one of his so far is his 12-CD audio program
      "How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to
      Be"


      It's a relatively early recording of Jay Abraham in a studio
      where he lucidly talks through most of his marketing
      mindset and strategies.

      I think that this is his best work I've seen because it
      goes through almost all of his strategies step-by-step.

      He's also go a Nightingale-Conant 6-CD audio set The
      Mastermind Marketing System.
      Though good and cheaper,
      it's not as good as the How to Get from Where You Are to
      Where You Want to Be
      12 CD set.

        This thread has reminded me about Jay's book.

        I started to read it a few years ago and never finished it. I did find it a bit dry and not an exciting read.

        I will read it again now.

        Funnily enough, sometimes one can read a book and not get that much from it. A while later when reading it again, you can get so much more out of it. It often seems like a completely different book and usually I can't believe it is the same book. Almost like I'd never read it again.

        I think this phenomena can be for many reasons, perhaps there are concepts or words in the book that you don't really understand, but you skip passed them. Also, you weren't quite ready for what the book had to say.

        Weeks, months or years later and you read it again and WHAM, you finally get it.

    I'd just like to quickly mention a few books in the same League as Jay Abraham's "Getting Everything You Can Out Of All You've Got" as well as some of the other books mentioned here.

    Ben Mack's "Think Two Products Ahead". His Legend Platform Is Killer.

    Although, I recommend buying the book, you can google "Ben Mack legend Platform" and find a pdf of that section of his book for free. The whole book is great and worth more than what you'll pay at amazon, but the legend platform is essential. It is a one page visual layout of your Direct-Branding DNA (direct-marketing principles and branding strategies working in harmony), that helps you optimize all of your communications and keep them on target.

    The best book IMHO is Eugene Schwartz's Breakthrough Advertising.

    Dr. Harlan Kilsten gives away over a dozen free mind maps on this classic at Breakthrough Advertising Eugene Schwartz Freelance Copywriting Direct Mail Internet Copywriting

    and Allen Says' "Private Posts' is another great one.

      What's kind of cool is that business basic are connected with a lot of today's IM strategies... like OTOs are really just addons.

      If you can creatively strategize with Abraham's teachings in mind, there's no telling how much money you could make.

        OK I have made my way through a couple more of Jays programs. There is a lot of great info but I still contend that you can get everything you need out of his $12 book or his $495 home study course. He used the same principals in most things and it comes back to what he talks about in the book.

        Also if you do a search on Jay Abraham in google you'll find a place that sells a lot of his stuff for great prices. Best of luck to all.

    It really is a fantastic book.

    I have multi thousand dollar courses from Jay Abraham and this book actually covers most of the information you'll find in many of them (although it only does it in the written format which is not as valuable for everyone).

    At the price it is a must read book if you're a marketer.
