Is Hostgator still great?

I've used Bluehost for a year. I love it and it's been great for me.

I need to use more adult material on one of my sites, so after all the great things i've seen about Hostgator, I decided to change over.

I've still not moved all my sites over. I've also seen a few complaints recently.

Is it still as good as it used to be. I'm sure it is, but a few nods of heads would be nice.

Cheers
fin

I've used HG for years. I was happy with their service, until they unplugged one of my sites because it got so much traffic from the WF so fast they couldn't deal with it. 3 hours later, the issue was resolved, and I don't think I lost a lot of money, but it was a fair amount of stress. I suspect that might happen at BH also, but I've never heard of it.

I've been using the "Baby Plan" for a few months now on a few sites, and it's been rock solid. The only slowdowns I have had were from some WordPress "social" plugins which were having trouble accessing some of the social sites like Reddit and LinkedIn (which is obviously not HostGator's fault).

I live in Houston, and I've actually been to their office... Yikes!!! So, I'll never use them.

BUT, they do have some great reviews from a lot of very respected marketers, so they're obviously doing something right.

I read your more detailed post as well, but this one is much easier to quote.

I have also been to the old HG building, and it was definately in an older building.

Did you know they recently moved to a building that was just re-done a couple of years ago? It is a much nicer place now.

Also, their office in Austin is a very nice looking place. It was also just re-done and is very clean and such.

As for the look of the headquarters being a great reason no to do business with them, I am not sure I totally agree with you.

Hell, I bet Allen runs this place from his spare bedroom. And maybe we should ask some of the mods that do most of the work of this business how well they are paid. (THANKS MODS)

I can appreciate that their headquarters did not live up to your expectations. But for the most part, they do provide a good service at a fair price. After all, that is what 99.9% of their customers care about.

Didn't know they moved... I was there back in March or April 2011, so things change, but you know how first impressions stick in your mind.

Everything in Austin is nicer than Houston, so that doesn't count. :p
(I just wish my wife would hurry up and graduate so that we can finally move back!)

If you read my detailed post, you know that I already acknowledged your points, and I regret ever posting my first statement in this thread, which was actually quite unprofessional on my part.

As for Allen, I'm not in the IM niches so I don't invest any money here... So it is okay with me if the WF servers are packed in his double-wide and he sits on his front porch in overalls, complaining about spammers with Dos XX in one hand and a cigar in the other.

I'm a fan of Host Gator. The customer service is good. In the years I've had it, my site has gone down once, but they were already aware of it and on the job by the time I got through to customer service. It wasn't down too long.

Yes, I also think so. Hostgator was my second choice after BrainHost and I didn't need to try any other web hosting company.

What I really love about Hostgator is their support with Live Chat. You always get someone to chat instantly and they are kind and helpful.

If the agents are not able to deal with your request at that moment, they promptly submit a support ticket for you and everything is resolved very fast.

      Hope that helps.

Used to be with them but somehow I find my site takes a long time to upload even though I'm on a reseller account. In the end I cancelled and switch to site5. But I must say HG's service is good. They actually gave me one month free hosting to test with their servers in India instead of the US in an attempt to retain me.

I used to work at HG and I don't see any probs with their office...It's top of the line with brand new machines and 2 large flat screen monitors at every desk...We have a great break room with a large flat screen TV, xbox 360, ping pong table, and pool table....Not to mention the work-out room that we have with treadmill's, weights, and Tv's.

So I really don't know what you mean by that....:|

I spoke a little carelessly there, didn't I? Normally I try not to say anything bad about anyone, even if I'm thinking it. Not sure why I have so little tolerance lately, and I'm speaking my mind without a filter.

Well, my first impression was that it is in a terrible location there off 290. Getting into the parking lot was terrible, and parking was worse. Most of the cars were beat-up old Toyota. Not only do I hate Toyota drivers, LOL, but it shows they don't pay very much, do they?

There was trash all over the parking lot. I had to walk through peoples' smoke and look for a way into the building. The employees that were outside smoking were not smiling, they were complaining loudly about callers. Nobody offered to give me directions.

I found the very dirty elevators... I would have thought they were freight elevators, but employees were using them. One guy laughed as the elevator shut before I could enter.

When I finally got in, I had no idea what floor I was supposed to go to... No directions were anywhere.

To be fair, once I finally got inside, the people were very nice, and when they couldn't answer my questions they directed me to someone who could. Their smiles were real, not plastic, and their enthusiasm was real, not fake honey... And if you're going to have to choose, good customer service should always be at the top of your list when you want to buy something, right?

The computers the workers had were indeed nice, and they seemed to have a very casual work environment, which I guess is popular these days, but I do not care for it at all... I want to invest with people that look and behave professionally. A lot of other places have all of the perks, but employees still dress professionally and speak professionally on a Monday morning? Call me old, I guess... Like I said I know it's popular with a lot of tech companies these days.

Almost all of my questions and concerns were answered to my satisfaction... But the saleswoman would not set up my account? She said I should go home and do it online. This kind-of blew my mind... All these years I have been taught to take a person's money as soon as they are ready to give it to you, maybe I'm behind the times.

After all, it IS an Internet company. And dozens of people have personally recommended me to them, people that I know and trust. They have great reviews, and I know that their employees frequent this forum, and work hard to service Internet Marketers.

But as I went back down the elevator, through the stinking smoke of one of those ugly, sweet fake cigars that are so popular in Houston for some awful reason, and almost stepped on an old burrito of some kind while navigating past a diaper to get into my car, I just got the feeling that I didn't want to work with a company that doesn't take care of the little things here in the real world, even if they are great in the Internet world.

So, I personally will never use their service. BUT, they do have a really great reputation, and so far I am the only person that I know who doesn't say great things about them.

...And apparently I'm turning into a cranky old man without my own consent...

As an internet marketer, it is important to choose a great web hosting company for your sites. There’s nothing worse then paying for traffic to a site that is currently down. I’ve tried several different webhosting companies, and the host I recommend to most people is HostGator. HostGator is extremely reliable, cost effective, and they offer great support. Hostgator offers all the standard hosting plans that everyone else does, including shared hosting, reseller hosting, VPS and dedicated hosting services. Hostgator boats a 99.9% uptime guarantee and I definitely believe it.

Just transferred my site to Hostgator yesterday and have to say I was really impressed with their live support. I'd never transferred over a host before and with me not being the most technically able I made a couple of mistakes. They helped me sort everything out.

So glad I listened to people on the WF who raved about them.

Also I got my first month for free. Well 1 cent actually. If you do a Google search for 'Hostgator 1 cent' you'll find a stack load of coupons.

Hostgator is OK. Especially for the low price range. I've used them for years and I'd definitely recommend them. They do have excellent customer support and make everything very easy to use.

However, I've just started moving my sites over to a Linode VPS. I've never had a site "go down" with hostgator but I have noticed some sites going rather slow, despite my best efforts. The control panel is often slow to respond too (that might just be me, or my panel..)

Loving Linode already. Running Lighttpd and some other essentials.

Much, much faster. Loads more control. Only a little bit more than what I was paying before (not affiliated.)

Had a major problem this year. Actually, one of my main sites was down a whole day even. It really hurt me as this took place in nov. I now am looking at other hosting companies. True, I am no longer an HG reseller anymore. Like they say, that was a mistake of mine. Folks, we cannot afford to have a site down for a whole day when they crash a server. Also, getting thru to their 800, I mean 866 number was near impossible even. HG needs superior customer service.

      Hello Brent,

First of all i'd like to say hats off to you and your passionate team. In the beginning of this post I stated HG is the best without justification. but I have to give unto Caesar what is Caesars.

When I started as an amateur in 2008 with Godaddy my sites were mobbed by 'Nigerian Bank Attacks' and phishing scams, I immediately moved them all to Hostgator and was completely overwhelmed by the passion carried by every employee. These guys are so good with the perl scripting skills they were able to thwart not only the 'Nigerian Scam' but later a couple of Egyptian and 'most lately' Chinese DoS attacks.

The problem with Godaddy is, he has a faulty control panel and even when I use genuine components like the Akeeba backup component Im able to get into other peoples directories. In this manner the 'wicked ones' placed base64 code in my sites.

Now to compare customer service skills; The Godaddy guys, it appears, have no clue what I'm talking about. But every HG customer service representative was so well skilled and loaded with libraries of knowledge and the passionate can do attitude.

I understand that AIG has taken over recently and upto a massive expansion with some kind of blue host contract. The sad part is I now find a sort of 'tiredness' in the HG staff and believe they're biting off more than they can chew.

When we purchased this building we were a much smaller company that had little $$$ and a ton of growing pains to deal with. I risked everything when I signed the mortgage to acquire this building. The 290 location has served it's purpose allowing for us to grow to the size we are now, however it's time to retire it.

We currently are building out a brand new office in houston that we hope to be moved into in less then 6 months. The new office is in nice part of town, parking will be solved, and it will have a $4m interior buildout. Part of this buildout will include an exterior slide on the building allowing for our employees to slide from the 5th floor of the building to the 3rd.

I'd say at most we get a single customer visiting us every two months or so in houston. We don't get much foot traffic other then employees and interviews so yes the signs are indeed lacking.

I'm the owner of hostgator and am typically found wearing shorts and sandals to the office. If we had a dress code I might even quit! =)

I like HG, have 150+ accounts with them (counting reseller to cPanel accounts etc) and even though I run into some issues, if you call their tech support they're normally on the ball about getting stuff done.

Give 'em a shot. Just remember if you run into an issue, don't freak out until after you talk to their support.

Yes, I have been using them for years, and as a web designer I receive commissions by sending my clients there for their hosting. However, when it comes to dedicated servers, there are better deals out there.

If Mc'Donalds is the king of fast food, then HostGator is the king of hosting services.

Both serve their customers in a pleasurable and consistent way.

I've used Hostgator for years. I've dealt with so many hosting services over the past 15 years (yes, really), I don't even remember them all. (Bluebox was fun while it was under its original ownership, and it's the only one that stands out favorably in my memory.)

Hostgator isn't perfect, but their support staff (usually bright, funny, English-speaking people located in Austin, Texas) are wonderful. They don't give me the brush-off, they answer even my pickiest questions, and they stay in the chat until the problem is fixed. (Other hosting services often say, "Try this and, if it doesn't work, get back in touch with us.")

Once, back when I was on shared hosting, someone had injected spammy links that migrated through all of my sites. When I discovered it, Hostgator resolved the problem for me, overnight, at no charge. They didn't even reprimand me for not having current, secure WP installs on all of my sites. (I'd neglected a few, but desktop software now handles the updates across all of my sites.)

Hostgator get major points for dealing with that issue quickly and gracefully, and they've secured my loyalty.

I'm on a basic Reseller account, and I'll admit load time can be slow at times. For one of my largest sites that gets hit with heavy traffic, I use Omnis. However, I signed up with Omnis before I tried Hostgator. Today, I'd probably use Hostgator for that site as well... except I'm too lazy to move it and Omnis does a fine job.

No hosting service is likely to be perfect. However, after using about a dozen major hosting services (including GoDaddy, very briefly) over ~15 years, I can confidently recommend Hostgator.

Yeh, i would definitely recommend it.

Unlimited domains for $9 a month, i've had a few problems, but they have 24/7 support so you just wait a few minutes for someone to be ready, then they are ready to help. Every problem has been fixed so far within 5 minutes

Like eibhlin, I've tried sooo many hosts over the last 10 years. I've only been with HostGator for about 6 months now, but I've been very impressed with their service.

The couple of times I've had to contact CS, the service was quick, friendly and professional. My issues were taken care of immediately.

    So... so far, so good!

Hostgator has been affordable. I've owned 5 websites with them.

Despite what others have said, hostgator is good if you want to use prosper202.

You just have to learn to install it properly.

I have found their phone support slower than it used to be. Often it is quicker to use chat. You seem to get the most knowledgeable responders when you leave an e-mail ticket but I don't have enough problems to know if that is always the case.

I see plenty of people have already answered this for you, but it can't hurt to add my experiences with Hostgator.

I would never even consider using anyone but Hostgator for all of my sites. The deciding factor is their phenomenol 24/7 customer chat support which I've used so many times. I'm no webmaster by any means, but they have helped me every single time I've used their chat service. Without such help it could have taken hours to figure out certain things, that they were able to explain in just minutes.

Hands down, Hostgator is my choice by a longshot!

  • Hi, for my opinion Hostgator is simply the best.
I'm running my business through it, and just yesterday I bought my second account to run even more websites and blogs on its platform.

I've also tried others hosting like Midphase, JustHost, Site5 and BrainHost but the best is always the good and old Hostgator for me. I never had servers moving like crazy with websites offline (it happened a lot of times with 1 of 3 above...), and I always can count on Support the moment I need.

More, it has CPanel. And that's really what I need for my Wordpress oriented business.

    Thanks and see you soon,

I've been using HostGator since 2006. I did websites for clients hosted by my own HostGator hosting service and never got any complaints.

Used many platforms like PHP, WordPress databases and more and they have great level of updates that makes it easier to be compatible with the industry of Internet websites.

I'm using it now for my internet marketing niches and I rarely had some downtime.

    Cheers

    I don't recommend Hostgator

Over the years I've had everything from shared hosting to dedicated servers with Hostgator lately I had problems with due to issues with Wordpress.

They have suspended a few of my sites due to claims they are using to much of the cpu resources.

Here is a few extracts that they advised me to implement.

We noticed that this is a WordPress blog, and recommend a few different steps you can take to prevent this issue from recurring.

First, try to reduce the total number of active plugins on your blog. The following types of plugins are known to cause high resource usage and should be avoided:

All related posts plugins (WordPress Related Posts, YARPP) can cause significantly high load in most cases.
    - WPRobot3 and other auto-posters can also cause high load issues, and should be disabled if they are causing issues
    - StatPress and other wordpress statistics software should also be disabled, as these too can consume too much CPU in certain cases. Use Google Analytics instead for statistics as well as Awstats which already comes by default on your account.
    - WP Post Views is also a plugin that you'll want to avoid as it causes significant resource usage.
    - Any other plugins that are not vital to your Wordpress should be disabled.

On one of the blogs not one of the listed plugin above apart from jet pack site stats was used I however disabled all of my plugins not needed to run my blog and as a consquence suffered a 30% reduction in traffic.

Many of the plugins sold here on the warrior forum will not be able to be used with Hostgator I had this issue on a reseller account.

I did a reverse ip check on the server and found 999 other sites on the same server so my suggestion would that is more likely the cause of server overload...

Anyway moving hosts just thought I'd share an honest review reason why you see so may people recommending hostgator is probaby the $125 dollar affiliate payment.

I notice Brent posting in here I rang support the first time this happened and tore a strip off them because a week prior I submitted a ticket to support when my site was loading extremely slow and asked if I could do anything about it...

So as you can imagine I was a bit irate when after being told it was due to spammers and my site would be monitored that a week later it was suspended without notice due to causing high load due to plugins.

Anyway time to move on ill take my $2k plus spent on hosting with hostgator to someone else who understands blogging requirements.

I had similar issues, but don't believe its HG's fault for when I looked closely I found a few search engine bots were monstrously crawling all pages of my site. This happened as soon as they moved from 'The Planet'.

It was nightmarish for me as well, and I was quick to blame HG. But, its more of a business call you need to take, for it just may be a blessing in disguise, as it was for me.

I frequently used Hostgator for small sites when I had them newly created. One complaint is that when a site grows in traffic, even slightly over the limit, Hostgator suspends it immediately, rather than trying to upsell to a better hosting package.

Also, I signed a syndication agreement with a company some years back to publish their content via API calls. For some reason, Hostgator suspended the site for 48 hours while I faxed them the signed papers. I had no idea that they saw themselves as content police. Obviously, there was no DMCA or complaint involved, they simply took action of their own accord.

Finally, their shared servers do seem to go down frequently, as I still have a couple of sites and they go offline briefly, for several minutes every couple of days.

Maybe these issues exist with other hosting companies, I don't know. Just my 2 cents.
