mail chimp is free up to a certain amount of subscribers.

That isn't quite true. Well, it's true-ish but a bit of an exaggeration.

They don't allow affiliate marketing (that means they don't allow their clients to do any affiliate marketing even if they don't use Mailchimp to do so, as explained here).

They also don't allow a whole load of other stuff to be promoted, including, I think, anything to do with "make money online", and so on ... it's all set out in their terms of service, which are only 1 page and well worth reading (for those with a strong stomach).

Some of the other "free autoresponders" are in fact well monetised (from their perspective) by the sending out of their promotional stuff to the people on your lists, accompanying your emails. Im my opinion, that's hopeless, unprofessional and extremely unpleasant, and I know that if I tried to use an autoresponder like that, list-building would become very difficult for me, and my open-rates would of course plummet. So these, for me, are to be avoided like the plague.

Before committing yourself to using any autoresponder, it's a good move to subscribe to your own intended lists there under 2 or 3 different email addresses, see if what's sent out reaches your in-box, what it looks like, whether spam accompanies it, whether it has ads for "try our free service" attached to every message (horribly unprofessional, of course), and so on.

Use the forum's search function, be assiduous in looking at what people say; be very put off by comments like "I can see why it's free" and so on.

This is your business's primary asset that you're talking about. Who has custody of it is crucially important to your long-term income.

Take no chances: this is one of those rare "core issues" which actually determine "who succeeds and who fails".

GetResponse has a 30-day free trial offer and low prices after that.

Aweber charges only $1 for the first month and then $19 per month after that, giving you 2 months to make your first $20, effectively.

Those two have a strong and long-established reputation for successfully getting clients' emails into their subscribers' in-boxes.

I wonder why none recommends TrafficWave...

Your list is yor most important IM asset, so pease start out with getresponse {you can avoid paying till you build a good list of 100 }, aweber {the biggest and best (well dunno :-))} and icontact is also pretty popular... As if and when you do get succesful and have more than a handful of emails then getting your list to resubscribe when you switch providers is not a good thing ...esp with all the information thrown at us every day and you might loose a few of your valuable customers down the road... treat is as cost of doing business and you should be golden.

I've tried almost all of the autoresponders listed above.
Here is my personal opinion.

Mailchimp : true, they don't allow Affiliate Marketing or Internet marketer. They don't allow you to send out emails regarding earn money from home, or anything else that have connection to earning money online. Best free autoresponder provider according to me.
My account got banned after using them for one month. Luckily, they do show some good intention as they allow me to retrieve my list after my account being banned.

Icontact & Aweber : both of them are good. Fast delivery, good features, but a bit expensive for beginners

ImnicaMail : free(up to 1000 subscriber). Still using it, but then the time of deliver is not so good. Sometime my mail took hours before reaching my subscribers mailbox.

In my opinion, why not use free mail such as ImnicaMail, and improve your site, offers, and sales letter, and after that, switch to a better autoresponder after you see some money rolling in.

With the free autoresponders, you'll usually get what you pay for. With that being said, you might as well sign up to Aweber or Getresponse... or Prosender - i believe created by Mike Filsaime.

Not to beat this point to death, but free is not a good idea for auto responders. You really want Aweber. You can do something I did in my early days, however, if you can't grab Aweber right now. (Just remember the first month is only $1!)

Get a dedicated gmail account. Setup a simple form with Google Docs for name and email. Embed this form on your site. In gmail, create a vacation responder that asks them to add a second dedicated email to their address book. That second email you manually send messages through. The form fills into a spreadsheet. You have to manually manage your list, but it tends to motivate you to afford Aweber.

Maybe my silly suggestion can help you. Be careful not to spam with it of you try it out. Good luck with list-building :-)

You can also use Mailchimp. It's free up to 500 subscribers and then the price is similar to aweber.

If you have some money to invest though, I'd go for Aweber as it is the industry standard, and it has more functions.

I've heard of listwire autoresponder, but you'll get less control over your database than with the top autoreponders like aweber and getresponse.

Another cheap network you may want to look into is Trafficwave. I think its $20 monthly for unlimited subscribers.

But in all these, you should understand that you should never undercut on your autoresponder, as this is the livewire of your business

I say list wire is good for starters... but when you can afford it --get aweber or getresponse...

The short answer to your question is... ListWire.

It's the best free autoresponder, and it's not even close...

Having read the earlier thread, I don't think Alexa is personally trying to make you look bad Gary (unless there's some sort of history lol) it seems to be her rather strong opinion. Most times I would agree with her - paid is better. EXCEPT when it comes to Listwire. I've had no problems getting mail through when I test messages, and it is quick. Quicker than Imnica, though they have been improving. I was with Imnica and due to other things I'm doing dropped out and went back to you. And am staying with you. If you're new or just feeling like trimming the budget a bit, then ListWire is THE ONLY free autoresponder I'd recommend.

Figure out what works, then, once you know, decide if it is worth paying more and more as you grow your list or sticking with something that won't cost no matter how big your list grows. I know which way I'm going.

Years ago I started out with free email marketing then final went to a stand alone email systme. Both gave some problems. The first free email marketing bothered me over time cause I keep getting advisement up on each email. Plus there was some disadvantages to this tiype of mailing because getting something free there is quiet abit of benefits left out that were very important in connecting the clients and creating a circle of influence with each of them. Then the ones I paid for as my list grew so did my payout. I have a signature and connect with me. After about 12plus years I think I have finally figured it out and would be glad to help you.

Does anyone know if GVO sends to your subscribers?

I started using imnica last week but I don't know what happened to my account. It seems my account got disabled after I manually added my customers list through my optin form....Support still not responding...

um. you can't do that. You can have support import your list, but what you did there just broke the rules.

getresponse is another alternative.

Another option that I use and is fast and inexpensive is Send Reach

I like Imnica - never had a problem with support. You can use single optin for $3 per month. Only issue I have found is that they are not supported by some of the done-for-you services like InstaPage. Also they don't integrate with PayPal. But v good value and I have found them reliable.

I have a GREAT Free alternative that I use.

I use the MailPoet wordpress plugin with Mandrill SMTP.

Usually the wordpress plugin sends from your website hosting server, which has no chance of EVER hitting a subscribers inbox. Which makes it suck. But I use Mandrill to send my emails, which is Mailchimp's service. Using this makes my emails hit the inbox almost all the time (in gmail it doesn't even always go to the promotions tab)

Mandrill is Free for 12K emails a month, and after that it's only $0.20 per 1000.

This way I can setup automation right from the start, and it's nice to start building a list right in the WP dashboard (not even mailchimp's free plan lets you do that.)

Mailpoet has pretty much all of the bells and whistles that you need, it still tracks open rates, unsubscribers, can do single or double opt in etc.

The Limits
Mailpoet allows you to have 2,000 subscribers before you have to start paying a Yearly subscription (which is tiny compared to other autoresponders.) It is hackable, but the point here is, is that if you have built your list up to 2,000 subscribers you should already be making some decent income and then you can afford the expenses. No need to be unethical.

Mandrill, like I mentioned you can send 12K per month for free. This means that if you have 1,000 subscribers, you can send them 12 newsletters per month for free. After that, it is $0.20 per 1000 that you send, so that means that if you were to send 13 newsletters per month you would pay 20 cents and so on

The Verdict
This is the perfect way to get started. Hands down. I've tried listwire. It's no good, they give YOUR subscribers ads, and serve up other people OTO's when anyone subscribes to your list. I've tried Mailchimp free. It's alright, but you can't even setup an autoresponder on the free plan. All other ones you have to pay for right from the start.

This way, you can make decent money from your list before you have to start paying. And when you DO start paying, it's cheaper than most alternatives at scale.
