You should host your own. I switched from Aweber to Email-Marketer from Interspire (Also used to be known as Send-Studio)

And if you are going to use the argument of "Services are more reliable"... I say BS. Think about it, if you have a decent host, you will have 99% up time, which means your responder will have 99% up time.

If you website DOES go down or the server reboots at some point, it doesn't matter since even if you had a "service"... prospects won't be able to opt-in since your site is down for a min or two. << Worst case scenario

My 2cents.

Aweber is my choice. I haven't tried GetResponse, though, so it's not after a comparison. I've been perfectly happy with Aweber, and the people there are always friendly and helpful with any concerns or questions.

I have been using Get Response for a couple or three years and they have been great. I think that Aweber is the more popular but of course once you are in you are not going to change as you would have to reauthenticate your entire list and probably lose most of them.

As far as self hosting I think that this is dangerous as you could easily get labeled as spam if someone did not like your message and then your entire domain and hosting of email will be banned. Better to let a cheap outside hosted autoresponder take care of it

Well. no problems really.. their service is just expensive in my opinion when compared to others.

I've used Getresponse for years and never had a problem.

Not tried Aweber. You'll find that those are the two most used ones.

I've use Getresponse and never had a problem. From what I've seen it seems that the top guys in the internet marketing field are sort of split 50/50.

And what do you think about Prosender? I have read it's part of aWeber but they still have the old prices.
I am at the same point: Getresponse vs. aWeber.

I see aWeber is much more expensive, specially if you have more than 500 subscribers...

I use GetResponse for the longest time, it's cheaper than Aweber, and I'm very satisfied with it's results. Never tried Aweber, and with the way Getresponse works for me, I don't I'll ever will. Just got so used to it..

I've tried out GetResponse and AWeber but settled on AWeber
for these specific reasons:

1. Great Support - I've found the support I get from AWeber to
be excellent particularly with anything technical.

2. Trackability - AWeber Analytics allows me to track the response
that my messages are having on my prospects and customers.

This is HUGE.

Look at any top end marketer, and you'll find that they test and
track the response of their subscribers like a maniac.

Sure, the bigger boys may use different systems like InfusionSoft
or EmailLabs etc, but LOOK closely and notice that they're tracking
more than just click through rates.

Why? To get higher ROI and maximize subscriber and visitor value.

3. Great Training - AWeber provide a first class education on
how to use autoresponders effectively and what trends to look
out for that could affect your list building efforts.

4. Ahead of the Curve - As AWeber only provide services
related to autoresponders (including Delivery Monitor), they focus
their expertise and resources on one thing: autoresponders and
have become great at it.

I used 1ShoppingCart for a few years back in 2003 because they
did the autoresponder, shopping cart, affiliate scheme, etc all
under one roof. Big mistake on my part: they didn't do any of
them particularly well - too many technologies to master.

5. Easy to Navigate Interface - I just find the interface of AWeber
to be better than that of GetResponse (at least when I tried it out
around 6 months ago).

With AWeber it's a breeze to navigate around the site and it's
clear where to go to access the different functionality.

By the way, with my AWeber account, I can still use single opt-in
for my lists if I choose to do so.

And as for the supposed 'high' pricing of AWeber for larger lists,
get a grip. Start thinking like a business person instead of a skinflint.

For me, the way I utilize AWeber for my lists, the additional
Analytics functionality is worth the additional dollars to me.

Why?

Because I can better target the right message to the right
person instead of sending out a blanket e-mail to all of my
list and alientating those who aren't interested in the message.

Does GetResponse have analytics yet? Not that I know of
though it's in the pipeline.

Does AWeber have analytics? Yep.

Infusionsoft has advanced tracking too but they're $5k to
set-up and prices start from $299/month. There's is an
even more sophisticated system.

Comparing AWeber with GetResponse is not an apples to
apples comparison IMO. Just like comparing AWeber to
Infusionsoft is not an apples to apples comparison.

Before deciding I also took a look at who the pro Internet
Marketers were using at that time: mainly AWeber.

I noticed that GetResponse use a testimonial from Marlon
Sanders on their website and yet he sends his newsletter
to me via AWeber.

Make up your own mind but the reasons I've given above
are the main ones I think that AWeber is a better choice.

I use 1shoppingcart and ARP3 (a self hosted solution) for my lists of over 150K

Most people seem to use Aweber. I have tried them and had no real problems but I don't really like the interface. Although I have tons of computer experience I for some reason spent too much time setting my stuff up with them simply because their interface is not quite structured well enough.

I currently use Infinite auto responder which I host on my own server. You can get it at infinite.ibasics.biz. It is a free PHP script and although you have to install it and know just a little about using PHP it is well worth it because you have complete controll over everything and I have not had a single problem with it.

I strongly recommend this solution I did a lot of searching and testing and found this to be the best solution.

If you do not know PHP or how to install scripts on your server I wouldn't let this discourage you from using infinite autoresponder. Setting it up is very simple and you can get someone from elance.com or some place like that to do it for you for practically nothing.

I use both aweber and 1shoppingcart. 1shoppingcart has the advantage that everyone who buys from you is on your list - BUT - they haven't opted in to your list, they just bought a product from you - so you have to be especially sensitive with how you start out mailing them.

I was having running battle with autoresonders untill I had to implement getting autoresponder on my server and sincce then, it has been wonderful. I have it with no monthly payment, unlimited list.

I use Aweber as an AR - its the easiest to use and is pretty sophisticated.

I use Constant Contact as an e-newsletter tool only - which it is great for. But it doesn't bear comparison to Aweber as an AR, however.

I'm switching to aweber, I was using freeautoresponder.com but I wasn't to pleased but using a free autoresponder you never will.

aWeber has been working well for me. It's a good question to be asking, we all soon realize how important a service it is to the success of our business/s.

wow... all this chatter and not one mention of iContact; which I have found to be just as easy as AWeber and a little bit cheaper, too.

Aweber all the way. I tried the other one and it didn't work out to well for me.

I like aweber because of the what you see is what you get form of it....

Takes some time to learn the back office if you have never had experience with it before.....but it you will be fine.

Stick with Aweber.

I use aweber - had no problems with them at all. Customised thank you pages, multiple lists, broadcasts, broadcast from your blog - awesome service. Definitely recommended by me!

As for hosting it yourself - I dabbled in this before and it's a complete minefield, imho. If you are selling email hosting services - go for it, but if that is not your business, then let the pros deal with the spam laws and the double opt-in and the certification for all the major ISPs and then keeping up with everything. That's what they do - my time is better spent building my business!

I noticed a mention of Aweber's API. Unfortunately, Aweber doesn't offer API. That's why we're looking for another alternative. Maybe iContact. We'll see.

you can have the cleanest list and best non spam email on a self hosted solution and still get black listed. And if you're not constantly checking with the blacklist folks - how will you know your emails are not being delivered? You won't unless you check.

"But I have a dedicated server", so what? That server uses an IP from someone's allocation. If anyone on that block of IPs pisses off an blacklist they can decide to block the entire range - from a class C all the way up.

And they don't care about anything but taking out the spammer - collateral damage to your business be damned. And they don't have 800 numbers so you can call them up and present your evidence that you're not a filthy spammer. The larger service providers don't even have these numbers, though they may have special email addresses that small fry don't have.

The amount of effort put forth daily to prevent spam is staggering - most of us on the outside (I've ran several data centers - I use to deal with this crap daily) have no idea as to the amount of effort expended. Nor how hard it is to get off a black list.

Having said that I run a small list (like 400) folks on ARP3. Works like a charm and since its mostly a social group if something comes up (Hey Jack why no email?) I can check rather quickly. My lively hood doesn't depend on it.

If you are thinking of self hosting then ARP3 is something I highly recommend, for small lists, unless you have the time/experience to police your IPs.

I've used most mainstream services - aweber, constantcontact, brontomail (though not really an autoresponder), and iContact. I use iContact now. Not that the others are bad, I just like iContact.

Also for self hosted I use ARP3 and for sending out single emails to various promotions I also use a program called World Merge. Great little program and highly recommend, though I don't know if its still on the market.

I'm an aweber man- great support, a bit slow on the broadcast some times but nice and easy to use.

A bit pricey once you past the 25K subscriber mark.

Aweber. No complaints although getresponse are more flexible.

I use email aces as they are the only ones that accept Paypal as the payment method.

*note to self* Must get a credit card!

I looked at both, a while ago, and decided on getresponse. It seemed seemed to do everything AW did w/o additional fees for becoming successful.

I have enough issuies with babysitting updates to all my CMS-es and Wordpress installations - so I won't need one more pain with updating, fixing and configuring self-hosted autoresponder.
Hence i'd vote for hosted service - and Aweber seems to come first.

Also I am about to launch something really serious with potential for 100k+ list - and that making me want to go with a big guys.

Awebr's my personal fav, although you won't go wrong with any of the 2 you have mentioned.

I just started with Aweber and while I like all the features like custom confirm pages, tracking, etc, I still find it to be a little confusing when you are getting started. Definitely use the video tutorials because even though you think you might be able to do something, you need to learn the way they do it. Excellent support, though. They walked me through everything. See? If I had watched the tutorials....

i personally love aweber and get response and they both do great job

I have AWeber and GetResponse accounts. Everything new is on GetResponse because they support automatically adding members via DLGuard and in general are more understanding of the issues Internet marketers face.

I am surprise no one mention other reputable autoresponder services like Icontact, ConstantContact, Bronto, DirectResponders, VerticalResponse, MonsterResponse, ShoutResponse, SuperSponders and RapidResponsebot.

I use aWeber AND 1shoppingcart.

Two different applications, but I've found both to be superior. Minor (2-4%) issues with deliverability, but if anyone tells you they can guarantee delivery, walk away.

I especially like 1SC because it ties in with my shopping cart- i.e. a purchase is equivalent to a double opt in.

An one way I use this- instead of giving a freebie on an opt in for (I really believe people are tuning these offers out) I like to offer them a product from my online store- but I give them a 100% discount via a coupon code.

End result- they get a product with real value (not a dinky report), and they get it for free without ever pulling out a credit card.

On my side, I get a new opt in that doesn't have to go searching for an email link to click.

Win win there.

By the way, this process is ONLY available through 1SC.

I used to use GetResponse, now I have Interspire Email marketer setup on my own server, and I am loving it so far.

I use getresponse from 2 years and happy with service so far.
IMHO service is 99.9% same as aWeber but here you save a lot and can use own affiliate link to sign up as per their TOS

As a sidenote, aWeber just increased affiliate commission if you want to promote as affiliate

I'm curious if anyone has tried GoDaddy's Express Email Marketing service? I'm trying to decide between that and Aweber.

It allows me to not bother about spam complaints since they use the double opt in.

Secondly, if you want your emails to get to your subscribers inbox then go with aweber. i have not used Getresponse but have heard good things too.

Aweber takes spam ultra seriously and does not allow you to import co reg lists as Getresponse does.

I know of 2 big named gurus who defected to Aweber all for the sake of deliverability of emails. So don't just go for what is cheap.

All that hosting stuff is great but I have no plans of fighting spam complaints on my own.

Can't speak for Get Response but I've been more than happy with Aweber for 3 years. I'm not heavily into email marketing, but I've never had any problems or difficulties setting up email campaigns.

I use aweber but trafficwave dot net looks pretty comprehensive.

I have used both Aweber and Getresponse in the pass, they both have their own things. Have not using them for awhile now due to I was not selling or promoting anything. Now I am getting set up again, i will use both again. Also will look at some of the others mention in this forum.

Between the two, my pick would be (after hosting your own, of course - nothing is better than being able to dictate your own needs accordingly) GetResponse. It's simple and CS have been good. My other choice is Interspire.

Aweber is definitely my choice. Great service.

I don't think anyone mentioned Mail Chimp yet. The absolute BEST Mailing List Manager I have ever seen. It's phenomenal. It's from the guys that made Survey Monkey.

Seriously, everything about Mail Chimp is superior to AWeber, Constant Contact... The BEST part being they have no branding at ALL on your outgoing emails.

I also use Acajoom if i'm using a Joomla site for something. Acajoom is pretty powerful and only 40 Euro for lifetime usage. Very easy to setup.

I've been migrating over to Mail Chimp for the past few weeks and it really is phenomenal. All the features you could ever want out of an email marketing platform with great deliverability.

The best part about Mail Chimp is the API IMHO, which is the reason I went to them in the first place. Their API is solid, feature rich and opens the door for an unlimited number of email marketing possibilities. It basically gives you access to the entire system through your own custom programming.

I use ninjaresponder... Tellsman's private label Aweber...I just like to get at least 7 emails daily form Tellsman

Service is great...deliverability is great...aweber has affiliate program...great too and best of all most IM products that incorporate autorepsonders into the programs have aweber enabled...less setup time for me...and I do love my IM products

Aweber works for me.

I'm using aweber and so far getting good results although i need to pay a monthly fee of $19.95, no complaints about that as it takes good care of all my lists.

one tip to get a high opt-in rate is to offer a FREE ebook or some special discounts. People will never give you their email for no good reason.

For list under 500 i use hosted version, interspire email marketer is what i use.

For a list more than 1000 i use service like emailaces.com and getresponse.com

I dont use AWÉBER because their plan is good enough for me, $20 a month for less than 1000 list is not enough. I recommend you try emailaces.com they give you 2500 list for $9 a month and also its owned by a fellow IM'er Gary Ambrose!

Also Awéber doesnt allow subscription via paypal, which SUCKS!

Aweber - are there any others?

I have seen some free ones out there - but they come with a ton of advertising that really is a turn-off.

The cheapest Aweber is about $16/month, and works pretty much flawlessly.

All my buddies use Aweber but somehow during my research I decided to use Get Response.

I've been okay with the service and transferred my list over from another service that I was paying for.

Unfortunately, they recently upgraded and have been very slack on fixing issues or responding to customers. It put at least 4 of my lists out of commission for over five days...not acceptable.

Anyway, I'd consider WHY most internet marketers are using Aweber...there are other options but the general consensus is that Aweber leads the pack.
