Bob Serling - Million Dollar Licensing

Here's my review of MDL.

I opened up the box and found 2 large manuals (one is over 300 pages, the other about 80 pages), a 12 CD set, a 6 DVD set that is basically bonus interviews and case studies, some quick start materials, and 2 bonus pamphlets with some detailed questions that past users have asked.

The funny thing is, I went right to the 300 page manual and flipped it open. To my surprise, I found 50 - 100 pages are inserted UPSIDE DOWN..... so that sort of turned me off from the start. Then I randomly went to the first DVD and popped it into my DVD player. It was a rather bland power point presentation with Bob Serling and a guest talking in the background about the concept of the course. It was kind of boring so I turned it off.

At this point I was a little disappointed by what I saw. However, I put the materials down for a couple of hours, then came back and opened up the manual and started from Chapter 1.

The guide so far has been amazing. There are some great things in here that I've never seen in any other Offline course I've purchased so far. The other manual that is around 80 pages in size corresponds to the content in the large manual.

I've also listened to the first 2 audio CD's that go along with the first seven chapters of the book and I'm enjoying them so far.

So anyways, this is as far as I've gotten, but from what I've read and heard, it's an excellent course. Is it worth the price? I think so. There's more than one strategy to implement so it gives you a lot of different ways to implement this system.

This is outside of the IM realm, since you're working through the post office and talking on the phone with clients. However, the best part is that you really don't need to do any face time. It's all phone and mail.... except I've got some alternative ideas to implement this. We'll see how it goes.

So that's all I have for now. I'll update more as I go through the course

The reason for the "thank you" is that he was a guest at Frank Kern's seminar @ the Hard Rock, I saw the video of his presentation and I'd never ever thought of the concept of licensing a marketing method before. I'd used Frank's "Reciprocity Boomerang" to great effect for myself though, and after seeing Bob's talk on licensing a marketing concept the light bulb kinda went on for me. Since then I've gone ahead and "licenced" the Reciprocity Boomerang 3 times, each time it made more then $10K for the client and I was paid between 12.5% and 33 1/3% each time. Basically I went to what appeared to be highish traffic web sites that had something to sell, but obviously did not understand marketing well. I watched the site for some time, got to know what the core product was, who the buyer probably was etc...watched the traffic stats for some time on quantcast blah blah blah. Then I'd write a letter to the owner of the site and essentially say "I have a marketing method that can make you some money. I've done it for XXX and it's done XXX and blah blah blah. I'm sure I can make a nice profit for you using my unique marketing method blah blah blah. If it does not make at least $5000 you will owe me nothing. This should not require more then 10 to 15 hours of your time. Anyway you get the jist. I sent this out (by email..probably the worst way to send it) to 9 web sites and 3 of them took me up on it.
        So, other then what Bob taught @ Frank Kern's Mass Control event which Frank gave away for his Mass Control Monthly launch I have never heard of Sterling or his idea's or methods. However, I did get that one great idea from him and like I said it's made my clients just under $50,000 and made me just over $10,000...so I feel that A) it's just the right thing to do to buy the course from him as a way of paying him for what he has already given me and B) I hope to learn more and as a result make more.

          I wanted to get this moving again to see what additional successes have been had. This is an area where I confess has me hesitant to take the first step. I think if I were to step out there, I would want to try it with a business owner I know and with the business owner spending little if anything out of pocket. Then I could get a real success story under my belt w/o the business owner having too much at stake.

          Using the toll gate can be very expensive for a business. On the list side, Bob suggests you use only businesses that have a list of at least 10,000. So if the other business mails a solicitation to those 10,000 people, it will cost at least $10,000 - probably more. From what I read, Bob didn't say specifically how his toll gates worked. So, I would be creating something on my own on a hope and a prayer. If my creation fails, I have cost this business a bundle. It's not just the list and the businesses and the products that matter, but a lot also rides on the creation of the marketing piece.

          I think it is so critical to find an idea and a process that has already worked. Unless you're Jay Abraham with a track record, it might be tough to get that financial commitment from a business, especially in these tough times.

          In a group of FAQs, when Bob was asked, "What if the toll gate is unsuccessful?", Bob's reply was, "Personally, I've never seen this happen." That just leaves me with a BIG hmmmm.

          As it stands now, I have no idea whether this works. All I have is what Bob says. We all know, however, that often, people prop up their courses with success stories that we could never validate. There was a guy interviewed on one of his videos who claimed to have this incredible toll gate success story right out of the box before he even paid for Bob's course, yet I could not find anything about him via an online search. He had a very unusual name. I find that odd because once I have success, I would have sites and blogs everywhere. You only need it to work one time. Rinse and repeat.

          One of the things I like about Bob's marketing is that he suggests you make your first contact via FedEx overnight. I totally agree with this. People have a whole different attitude about mail that comes overnight or FedEx. I have used overnight mail for marketing and it works. If you get an account with FedEx, you can ship for a bit cheaper. IMO, it's the FedEx envelope that commands attention, NOT the fact that it got there overnight. With that in mind, FedEx has a super saver service that might take 3 to 4 days to arrive and cost about $8.00. BUT it still arrives in the FedEx attention-getting envelope. Most recipients are not going to notice or care that it was a 3-day delivery. Personally, as the recipient, I have never checked my FedEx envelope to see when it was mailed.

          Enough of my speak. Anybody still out there to chime in?

            I don't have the JV course, but in MDL (1) you basically take a tested offer from company one and send it to company two's customers. If I were negotiating the deal, I'd send it to a part of the list first. Few companies that are interested in your deal will be unwilling to spend 3000-5000USD on a test mailing. If they do, you might still be able do email, especially if the company already takes online orders.

            My main issue with Bob. He does the same about people screwing you out of your commission. I'd take it with a grain of salt, but I don't think it's a great issue, either. There's always risk and your clients should realize that.

            Eh, I wouldn't assume that. One, many people who finally "make it" get paranoid about losing their market share and stay low. Two, anybody can write anything on their website. Unless you're getting loads of traffic, nobody will hold you liable for the veracity of your claims or testimonials. In addition, a non-professional looking website can make you look worse to a sophisticated audience than no website at all. I've had colleagues dismiss a friend of mine as a hack, simply because said friend is selling coaching on an admittedly cheap looking website. While you might get a "I tried to look you up but I didn't find anything" response from new prospect, it won't be an issue unless you're focusing on digital marketing. Lastly, time. If you can tell your prospect "I managed to do a campaign for them, here's a letter signed by the CEO and you can ask them personally", why spend all that time and money on a website? I had one for a few years; nobody cared; in the end I let the domain expire and used the bandwidth for other things.

            So.... Bob is selling his course with the toll gate method..... and he says it has "never" failed... Interesting....

            He has found a strategy that works 100% of the time... even the "greats" would marvel at that.....

              Okay, I feel the need to chime in here and stick up for Bob Serling.

              Everything that guy produces is VERY HIGH QUALITY. Are you aware that guys like Frank Kern look UP to Bob? He's been doing this stuff long before the Internet, and he's still at the top of the heap.

              Anyway. I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, but when I purchased Million Dollar Licensing a few years ago, it included everything, including approach letters and everything else you might need. But maybe you guys are looking at a different package or something.

              Just had to say something because my opinion is very different. Also, Marlon Sanders has a great reputation, too, so I'm not sure what your beef is with him.

              Yes, that's how Bob answered the question. I still have that in print. Perhaps he was just referring to "his" successes. Although that was clearly not how the person was asking the question.

              Even if he did mean just "his" toll gates, that's still amazing because even with great marketing material, all you need to fail is a bad list.

              Jay Abraham has a similar program called "host beneficiary" relationships which I have on my pc somewhere. I'm gonna look back at that info again.

              My brother had another idea. His thought was instead of putting all the marketing risk on the business owner, why not get investors to finance the marketing. Get 5 people to each invest $2k. Use the $10k for the marketing costs. Then, if/after the concept works and your share of profits is $30k, you can agree to give them a nice return on their investment in a short period of time. You would still make great money. It would be no different than getting financing for any other business.

              Think how much easier it would be to get rolling if the business owner had zero risk. Or, you could even tell the business owner you will go 50/50 or 25/75 with the costs. I do think it is important for the biz owner to have some skin in the game. You could also agree that if you foot the marketing costs, your share of the profits would be higher. Or, you could even get agreement that after a successful launch, you will be reimbursed for the upfront expenses. We're thinking there are so many other options other than having the business owner foot all costs. Especially while you are just starting out & trying to get a track record.

              All that being said, I still think it would be a good idea to do the 1st toll gate with a biz owner you know (on a small scale) and tell them upfront that you are testing a marketing concept that has extraordinary potential..

    I'm anxious to hear too. I found the free vids really interesting and it seems like something that would really suit me since I have spent all of my careers connecting people (namely executive search & real estate,) If I can do something with the free stuff I will definitely buy to say thanks and learn more. This sounds amazing and thanks for the great post Brandon and you too Jason.

    As an aside, Bob Serling has a really calm style that would make you want to be his student! I like his low key style. Wish I had 2k....

        If your not willing to hustle this will not work for you. But, if your willing to get on the phone with successful business owners and play lets make a deal..you will make some deals and it's not very hard.

        My biggest struggle has been my health because it makes me appear like a flake in a lot of cases I''m sure. Between anemia, surgery and strong narcotics I've forgotten to get back to a number of people (which is not a very good way to close a deal) and even with this problem, and having been in a hospital (which made a lot of people nervous) this still works.

        I think they have said that one of the guys, Declan, has made $4million already this year and is on track to do about $10 million. There are a good number of people in the private forum who are doing six figures..you just gotta be like Nike...and Just Do It!

        Thanks for the feedback Brandon. I have no doubt that the courses I have are worth their weight it gold. I just have to stop spreading my attention so thin.

        I will definitely be putting MDL in my que of courses to invest in. I was already thinking about licensing when I first read the Four Hour Workweek in 07. Its great to know that it really is easy to get into. I hope to talk to you again when I get it!

    You have obviously been thru some tough stuff! and, I'm so happy to hear you've had success with MDL. You really deserve some breaks man, it seems.

      Hey Bruce - I ended up taking that site down because what I've decided to focus on is doing launches for other people. One of the concepts that Bob talks about in his course is licensing out a proven marketing campaign to company - well I have used Mass Control and PLF for myself and a few friends a number of times and produced great results..so I decided to do it a few more times for money. It's been working very well for me, in fact when Jeff did his recent Product Launch Manager Even in LA he talked about my success in one or two of his launch videos.
      Since PLM I've managed to land several clients in the IM niche, where as before the vast majority of what I was doing was Forex and the stock market, I've now got signed contract with three big name people who have all done $1million + IM launches to manage launches for them.
      It's been pretty amazing..and beyond anything I'd have ever expected.

    In terms of the results I've gotten. I did a few things with MDL. The first few deals I did, I just put some people together and did some JV's. That made a few thousand dollars. Then I did a couple of Past Client Reactivation Campaigns for people. All told I made about $30K doing those.
    I then decided to focus on doing product launches using Product Launch Formula and Mass Control for clients. When I had that video My medical debts where over $500,000. I started doing launches for people for a pretty small upfront fee, plus 10% of the launch. By doing that, I've managed to get the debt down to just under $50,000 right now. These have all been launches in the stock market, forex market and real estate.
    I went to Jeff's PLM event last month, and since then I've signed up a few more real estate and forex clients who's launches should all do 500k to 1million. I've also taken on three pretty big name IM guys (you'd know the names) who have all done $1million + launches who have hired me to do launches for them coming up...

    I also have a girl who's amazing..stood beside the entire time I was sick, and I'm building a really great relationship with her..so all in all, Id have to say that life right now is as great as it was bad only a year ago.

        Hey guys. I'm new here and only found this site while researching Bob. I guess what I'm wondering is, is there special paperwork involved in arranging the transactions?

        I'd love to just buy his program, but at this moment, i'm out of work and behind on bills and can't cough it up. So I was thinking maybe there was a way to get a deal or two done then give him his due.

        Any thoughts?

            I imagine some funds would be necessary in order to market to bigger companies. But I wonder about marketing to smaller companies, making smaller profits and gradually growing into the larger companies. I came across a snippet of some of his material and Bob mentions how you really don't need a lot of capital. Seems there can e a tad bit spent on overnight delivery.

      Yes Bob's system's work. However like anything they require a fair amount of work to set up finding the companies then a little time with the companies. As stated already you also need some capital to start with.

    Let's say I say to you here's a method to make millions:

    What is it?

    1) You find someone offline or doing a really bad online job who has a great unique product that is (could be) in demand. You have to make a call here.

    2) you strike up a joint venture but you secure "exclusive rights to it" This is SOOOOOO imprtant. no exclusive rights do not do it or you wil lbe fighting 1,000+ affiliates in no time.

    3) Now you market that product/service.

    Presto.......now what's the point in asking "how many made a million from this idea so far?" We all know 99% of people are lazy asses who jump form one magic pill to the next and will not focus long enough or put the effort in to work something. All those millionaires you see......how many are actually smarter than you are? There's no "trick to making money". Thank me later.

    Interesting course...plenty of good ideas and actionable concepts. Of course, you'll still have to have the grit to take action to make any money.

    I did have a major disappointment with the course, though. I'd presumed that Bob would supply us with at least one of the licensing letters that he always talks about, the ones that make the big money. But no, he just tells us ABOUT the letters, and how we can somehow arrive at our own winning letters if we just send out enough of our own attempt until we eventually end up with our own winning letters, through the process of testing and elimination. Well, duh! I already knew I could eventually come up with a winner, as I'm a professional copywriter. But I had expected that he'd supply the winning letter(s) so we wouldn't have to start at square one. In fact, that's the biggest reason that I paid for his course...to get his winning campaigns. As you might suspect, though, he will supply you with those winning letters, but ONLY if you decide to pay him for a very, very expensive upgrade to his coaching club (as I recall). Maybe it would be worth it, but I greatly suspect that most everyone who bought the course was hoping (expecting) to get access (and rights) to those winning campaign letters.

    There's another licensing course out there, by my friend Ken Kerr (who sadly passed away several years ago). I was first introduced to Ken by my friend Raleigh Pinskey in Las Vegas in 2002. Ken was the nicest guy you can imagine, and has stellar credentials: Creative Director for Walt Disney Epcot and Disney Japan; responsible for billion in revenue by licensing the Smurfs, California Dancing Raisins, Woodsey Owl, Gummi Bears, Tiny Toons, etc. Ken offered a very useful and interesting Licensing course. This product included these two substantial courses (along with other bonuses):
    -Licensing: How To Make Millions The Hollywood Way!
    -Mouse Power - The Million Dollar Licensing Secrets of the Magic Kingdom
    Ken sold all of this for around $300, and this included personal access to himself. After he passed away it was marketed as low as $99, at this site: Hollywood's Licensing Secrets Revealed (not an affiliate link, and in fact the course is not currently available).

    I suspect that Bob got at least some of his inspiration on the road to licensing from Ken, though it's just a guess. Anyway, if you come across any of Ken's material, grab it while you can. It's actually a physical product, in ring binders. And it contains a ton of information that I've never seen anywhere else. Owning both Ken's and Bob's courses at the same time is quite a treat.

        As a clarification, the MDL course I have does include examples of campaigns, but...they aren't really useable since they are based upon actual case studies of Bob's, and he won't allow you to use the names of the clients in your own campaigns (or the testimonials). These elements are central and critical to those campaigns, since the whole selling premise is that you're offering a new client the possibility of duplicating (licensing) campaigns that are verified as successful with specific clients. I understand the reasons why Bob would not want us to use these, but still...it would have been nice to find this out in his MDL salesletter, rather that after buying the course.

        Bob has a new MDL course out now, priced at $495. He says that it includes a new way around the problems I mentioned above, and if so, it would have great value.

        One mystery (for me) is whatever happened to Declan Barnett, who was a customer of the original MDL, and was so successful with it that he and Bob teamed up as joint-owners. Declan was even included in the second version of MDL (video interview, along with Frank Kern). But not too long after that, Declan seems to have disappeared, and apparently is no longer affiliated with MDL.

        I'm not at all trying to be overly critical of Bob, since he really is one of the 'veterans' of the marketing world, and I've been buying stuff from him for at least 10 years or more. His experience goes way back before that, and he certainly has some sterling credentials overall (though I may have him beat in longevity, since my first successful licensing deal was in 1978). There were precious few who were selling marketing or licensing info back in those days.

        I would recommend MDL to anyone who can afford it, and who is aware of the caveats written about in this thread. I haven't seen the latest version, but at $495 I'd say it's most likely a great buy, considering the value of the information (unless maybe you're already a JV or Licensing pro). I hope someone buys it and reports back here. For what it's worth...in my opinion, Licensing is the most valuable skill in the marketing world (just ask Bill Gates, or the crew at Shark Tank).

    MY QUESTION:

    What happened to Bob Serling? All his courses seemed to drop off the face of the earth. Is he in jail? ;-) I don't get it.

    Can someone give me an update. I have only recently learned of the MDL program and was doing some research to find that for what appeared to be a great product has become a ghost town with little trace as to what happened other than URLs that lead nowhere.

      Bob is alive and well, as far as I can tell. I still get emails from him on a pretty regular basis. In fact, three days ago I got an email from him saying that he was reopening the "audit version" of his MDL course.

    Apparently Bob Serling is still around, he has reactivate his Toll Gate JV course: Bob Serling's Million Dollar Joint Ventures Training

    However, I PERSONALLY have not heard from anyone who has actually earned any income from using what they have learned in MDL2.0.

      I liked the first MDL more.

      It gives you a short introductory letter you can swipe in order to approach future clients, which makes the process a lot easier.
      In the 2.0 version, the strategy changed to approaching businesses you already know, which might be harder for newbies without a lot of contacts.

      As I now have both, I'm putting my old 1.0 versionup for sale, so if anyone feels courageous, give it a shot. As with everything, it's not gonna work out if you call one guy, he tells you to get lost, and you spend the next two months crying in a corner. Just approach 20-30 local businesses and you'll have somebody agree to give it a try, after all, there's pretty much no risk involved.
