I have been looking for a good business directory script which has all the viral features and also include the comments and reviews.

If you have come such across such script, please let me know.

I would really appreciate your suggestions and helps.

Thanks

If you are familiar with WordPress, there are lots of good local business directory themes, from GeoPlaces, and Vantage to my own WP Local Places.

They all have different features, but all of them include what you are looking for.

What about PhpLD. Had used it previously for a niche website directory.

    phpLD Demo Products

Custom mods should be available for Viral features that you are requiring.

Not because of that 100,000 websites are using them?

Some free mods/templates have performance issues but not the main script.

There were some slowness issues for some servers in the past (though we provided help if you made a support ticket with us even then), but as of 4.2.1 and newer, people can run directories with 1,000,000 links and categories in a shared environment and do just fine. We offer support if you do have any issues with speed.

I am also a bit of a WordPress whizz and this means the learning curve will be a lot less which means I can work on marketing rather than managing the site...

Yes, you may not realize this but we have an all new version coming out too. It is due to go final any day now after more than a year of continuous development (not counting the 6 years that got us to 4.2.2). The best thing to do is to login to your phpLD account. If you don't know how to do that, send me your paypal transaction ID or other info via PM so I can look it up. As a previous buyer with a license you can download the new versions at no additional cost.

I didn't find one yet, but I would avoid GeoPlaces from templatic at all costs, the demo looks perfect and I was dying to use it for one of my website since it is perfect, but I checked it online. It is just has terrible feedback from everyone used it because more of multi plugins from different developers added together without proper modifications.

You can look its review on google

If you are looking to show multiple places on a google map, that is one of the available features in the new phpLD 5. You just turn on the proper widget, and you can do separate category pages for each city or all the latest links on a google map right on the homepage.

Eek! You know the first version of phpLD released in 2005 has thousands of sites online and there has been no significant security breach to date with any version. We need to report the post and have a moderator remove it before someone gets hacked.

I'm hoping it is closer to the beginning of the year as I am waiting on v10 to come out before I spend money on customizations.

They just launched their new iPhone and Android app and v9.7 just came out as well. v9.7 was more of an SEO upgrade with the 2013 update (9.8 - 10) being a significant change in the basecode.

All of this is based on emails, newsletter, and conversations.

Someone over on Sitepoint forums had said that they had tried them and that there ends up being a huge customization cost, and that their customization is done in the Phillipines, and invited everyone to google edirectory complaints.

Why specifically do you think the Vantage theme is terrible? I like that one so far.

I also like this theme - GeoTheme - Geo Wordpress Theme

The only thing is it seems a little more overwhelming as far as the learning curve, and I would rather not have that big map at the top of the site.

When you talk about directory script...a php script or a based theme it's fine? I know good options.

Directory Theme (Not Aff.Link) It's a based theme.

Be sure to checkout the latest version of eDirectory (10.3). My site should be upgraded today or tomorrow.

One of the new features is that you can literally build an iOS and Android app from within the sitemanager. Once you go through the steps, it outputs the file that you can upload to the stores. Pretty sweet.

I've only tested the demo version on their site but it looks nice.

Oh, and they have a monthly cloud version of eDirectory available. This is new but I use the hosted version.

Ok then, whatever makes you decide one is the best over the other. I would look at the features etc to decide myself.

It hasn`t even been out long, nor has affiliates which can influence how much a script is talked about. Edirectory does.

I would choose BD every day of the week myself based on the features.

You do what you want though, I was simply mentioning a script that I find to be very good.

I just fail to see how number of links to a site make one better or not. Especially when you factor in the influence of affiliates and how new BD is.

I was more thinking along the lines of whether the script is tried and tested in a large enough sample. Often there are usability issues, and when the script is easy to use, you see it grow. Maybe BD is growing now. One way to check might be how many new links are being added that point to BD from either satisfied customers or actual sites running it.

Yep, the directory industry got hit hard this past year. We were the leader (maybe still) for many years, but we've had to get into developing some other software products. It's going great, but it has not been a joy to see some of our customers who had strong directories get hit hard by Google.

What I'm seeing now is we have probably hit bottom now, and there should be some opportunities for people to create niche directories and succeed. The days of submitting to 1000 directories are probably over for good however, and that is a good thing.

Thank you. I agree. I haven't seen a Wordpress instance that really works long term. I've seen some "pretty" designs, but that is all.

As a paid subscriber to the Brilliant Directories model, let me reiterate what I have been saying for the past 15 months. If you are serious about running a successful directory site you are never going to do so employing any WordPress theme and plugin combination. Before signing up at BD I had looked at everything available and after months of research, I realized that BD was the industry leader in this particular marketplace with absolutely no real competition.

Every single feature and capability that you would ever dream of having is already built in. Additionally, they have just upgraded their entire platform and I doubt that based upon their latest efforts they will ever have any serious competition in the directory field.

Even more important than the product itself is the level of customer service and tech support, which is in a class by itself. I have never received better service and support from a company of this size since I have been making my living on the Internet. Their business ethics and level of personal honesty from everyone that I have come into contact with is absolutely sterling.

I'm not one for giving any type of recommendation, but as a paying customer currently owning four directories at BD, I am happy to give a 100% ringing endorsement for the product and the folks behind the product.

Whenever I would recommend BD all I would hear was how everyone was looking for a 'free' solution. I am quite vociferous in my estimation of what you get for free in this world. So now you are being offered the best product out there at the price you all have been clamoring for. Let's see what you can produce with all the barriers to building a world-class directory being stripped away.

This is as good as it gets and opportunities like this don't come around very often. If you are serious about getting into the directory game, now is your chance. Rest assured that there is still a great deal of hard work on your part that will need to be done. You still need a good business plan, a well thought out method of attack and the commitment to see your project through to fruition.

FYI - I just sold a niche directory to a client using one of my paid licenses and on this one project I will make around half of what I made all of last year and last year was one of my best years ever. The good folks at BD will tell you what I will freely admit - and that is that I have made every mistake you can possibly make in getting into the directory game. I would have probably been better served just following their lead, but that's just not how I operate. I want to try things the way I envision them first, but I don't believe in beating a dead horse. Eventually I do come around and avail myself of the knowledge and experience of those that have gone before me. These folks have a proven success formula. If you follow their business model and are willing to work hard, you have a good chance of succeeding.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the good folks at Brilliant Directories for providing me with the platform and resources to be more successful in having the ability to create truly passive income than in any other IM opportunity that I have ever encountered.

        Good luck to you all.

        Cheers. - Big Frank

P.S. I have spent the past 3 days shopping for the BMW convertible that I have wanted to buy for the past 10 years. Thanks to selling the niche directory, I hope to be bringing one home in the next few days - paid for in cash. :-)

My pleasure. I have a session scheduled with my BD coach for later today. I plan to discuss purchasing some additional lifetime licenses to create more niche directories for resale.

Ok ... I've spent quite a while checking out the brilliantdirectories website and really like what I've seen so far.

And thank you for your awesome offer ... I'm definitely going to take you up on it.

A couple of questions and some observations ...

There are over 50 themes displayed, each with a "View Demo" button ... from which I was hoping to see a demo of the theme. For some reason they only link to an offer to try it out for free and see what you can build yourself.

That is going to be handy ... but I want to see some examples of the themes in action ... not try and create one myself ... not quite yet anyway.

I'm particularly interested in a "Local City Guide" but don't see a theme for that at all.

I appreciate (and am more than happy) that the offer above is for a DIY deal and have spent a good while in the "Learning Centre" and will now watch more of the videos to keep learning.

And congratulations Big Frank ... great to hear of your success.

If I may assist - those are more akin to home page headers, not actually variations to how the script runs, which is virtually the same for any type directory you choose to operate. The main difference is the way in which the directory can be searched, via the home page search widgets. You can vary the generic data collected and displayed through the use of custom fields that are simple to add to your database.
That is going to be handy ... but I want to see some examples of the themes in action ... not try and create one myself ... not quite yet anyway.
While you are viewing the demo you will begin to shape in your mind how you may wish to add your own functions into the script through modifications that you can either do yourself or by utilizing the services of third-party PHP developers that advertise in their Marketplace.
I'm particularly interested in a "Local City Guide" but don't see a theme for that at all.
I'm sure that after you run the demo you will have a better understanding that these are not themes in the traditional sense. Take it for a test drive. :-)
And congratulations Big Frank ... great to hear of your success.
Thanks. I didn't do anything that you can't do yourself. :-)

    Thanks Frank,

Yeah ... I spent several hours today going through the videos, the forum and the learning centre ... and understand it a fair bit better now.

And someone was kind enough to point me to an actual operating site, which helped as well.

I can see how I could transfer my directory over to it ... even uploading all the data as csv files in bulk.

While you are viewing the demo you will begin to shape in your mind how you may wish to add your own functions into the script through modifications that you can either do yourself or by utilizing the services of third-party PHP developers that advertise in their Marketplace.
You are correct here too ... the more I learn about it, the more I see it can do.

I hadn't seen that they have a marketplace ... whereabouts is that? Hiring a third party developer who is familiar with the system already, sounds like an excellent idea.

I'm sure that after you run the demo you will have a better understanding that these are not themes in the traditional sense. Take it for a test drive. :-)
Yeah ... I see what you mean

Right. One of my sites which I'm currently migrating to the updated BD platform has 1.3M listings. All were imported via csv.
I hadn't seen that they have a marketplace ... whereabouts is that? When you sign-up for the demo you will have access to it. There will be a link in your admin panel.

The best part of that is that whatever you can dream up, you should be able to have it integrated without much of a problem. That way you are not limited. The problem with all of the other themes and plugins that are being mentioned as excellent solutions is that they all fall short long before you have run out of ideas of what you would like your directory to be, unless you are into plain-vanilla. Not my favorite flavor. Using a theme and/or a plugin to create a directory site is wishful thinking. Leave that to those who aren't committed to investing what's necessary to do the job properly. I have studied everything mentioned and many more not mentioned. Some are toys, some are junk and none will satisfy you. You can trust me on this.
      Thanks for the encouragement.
I hope you find it to your liking and stick with it. The potential is limitless and the more familiar you become with the platform the more ways you will discover to make money by giving 'free' listings. While you certainly can make money charging for premium listings, there is much more money to be made by creating a community with your directory members and selling them everything known to man. lol

Once I get all of my sites organized and completed, if you're still at it I will show you some incredible ways to cross-promote and how to offer services to your members, while outsourcing everything. My coach at BD wants me to produce an eBook on the subject, but finding the time will be difficult.

Feel free to ick my brain via PM if you need any assistance.

      Cheers. - Frank

My directory sites are used as an incentive for businesses to utilize my other services. I give away premium listing as an enticement to sell video services, web sites and specialty printing. My particular business model would probably be not very attractive to most directory owners as my personal feeling is that as long as the directory is paying its own way - and is pushing other business to me, then it's serving its intended purpose. Personally, I'm not interested in selling directory listings all day, every day. My directory sites are side-dishes - not the entrée. I do plan to create some sort of overview of how I utilize the sites, but I don't know when I will be able to get to that. From now to the beginning of summer is my busiest time of the year as I take summers off - as much as possible.

The important thing to remember is that the more listings you have, the more people believe it is worth being in your directory.
Also, could we see examples of your BD sites?
Not presently. My two current sites are being migrated to the new platform and getting a facelift. I was hoping that would be completed my now, but I got a very late start on initiating the process. The local medical and legal specialty sites are both brand new and are currently being compiled as I purchase the lists I'll be working from. Do stay tuned for an update when they launch in the very near future.

      Cheers. - Frank

What a great thread - I've been pulling my hair out with Premium Press Responsive Directory for the last several days - and now thinking the investment to get Brilliant Directories might be well worth it.

What bothered me the most about the WP theme I'm using - is the amount of people in the forums complaining about bugs.....don't think I need the headache of the site not working - once I've got paid businesses on there.

Does anyone know does it compare to edirectory ??

      Thanks

        @ BigFrank,

Thanks for your informative posts. I've been looking for a directory script and have shied away from Brilliant Directories because of the price but they are having a Christmas 2015 special where you can purchase 1 lifetime license for $750 or 2 licenses for $950 and so I just might take the plunge.

You are correct in that purchasing cheap scripts is not the way to go. If I add up all the money I have spent on cheap software, Wordpress themes, etc. I could have purchased several Brilliant Directory licenses and had quality.

I'll be spending the next couple of days doing more research on this particular directory script and try the demo before deciding.
