Warriors: What is the best plugin to backup large wordpress sites

What do you recommend to back up large wordpress sites? I purchased WPBACKUP PLUS and the support team has not gotten it to work for me with hostgator. I have a lot of files on these sites.

Does anyone have suggestions of what software works well for large websites that is compatible with hostgator? I am looking for something that is very easy to use.

Thanks in advance!

How large is that? How many pages and post? For all of my site, I always use backup buddy. I never tried anything aside from backup buddy.

I would look into backup buddy. It worked for more than 20 sites in a mastermind I was once a part of and all the site were relatively large.

I have shared hosting and also have a mac computer. Is back up buddy a one time charge or a yearly charge? I am looking for something that is a one time charge, if possible.

+1 for BackupBuddy. It's an annual charge.

    Cheers,

Another suggestion, outsource it, pay someone who knows how to do it a fair price. You then get your files at a "peace of mind rate".

What size exactly is your large site?

This is why it is not working. I'm also, almost certain the cpanel backup will not run either since HostGator has size restrictions on it. Running large backups is very cpu intensive. The plugin you are trying to use is probably hitting their cpu threshold, which isn't very high to begin with.

Even though you have separate websites, the backup job & your entire account runs as a single user.

I would suggest backing up by downloading files via ftp & manually exporting the databases.

We run into these problems all the time with other hosts restricting their cpanel backup generator when doing migrations.

          Brent,

What kind of limits does Liquilayer have for its backups? I have one of your reseller accounts, and this is something I was getting ready to ask you.

          Thanks

          Jeff

            Hi there Jeff,

To be completely honest with you, we have not changed ours from the default size, which I will need to look at to see what the limit is. (it's not a simple log in & look). I know that you cannot exceed the physical limitation of the account itself, but I don't think there is an actual limit. Generating large tarred backups in upwards of 5+ GB would however take a bit of time.

We do have some options as far as Wordpress backup plugins & addon services for FTP storage in the works for the near future. This is concrete yet, but we're exploring the options.

Keep in mind that we have spent a great deal of time & resources implementing StoreGrid which you can find more info on here - StoreGrid Backups | Professional Web Hosting - Shared, Reseller & VPS HostingProfessional Web Hosting – Shared, Reseller & VPS Hosting (we'll have some more in-depth details here shortly on how StoreGrid works. Currently we control the backup schedule, which is once per night, incremental backups which we store 3 copies of (unless there's a maintenance window). We're experimenting with allowing customers to generate their own backups using StoreGrid, but this needs to be tested extensively first to be sure loads will not be too high.

We've also got a new robust website builder in the works that's pretty awesome. We'll hopefully be releasing it within the next month.

Let me know if you have any questions, and as always, feel free to open a ticket if you need assistance or have any questions.

            Thanks,
            Brent

What's the size of the biggest site on it's own?

I'd recommend splitting your backups by site. This would also make it easier if one site needs to be restored.

I use BackWPup which is free and you can define several backup jobs for each site. For each backup you can select which folders, files, database tables are included at a very granular level.

This means you can have daily database backups, monthly backups of your uploads folder, weekly backups of all other files than your uploads folder for example.

I've written an article on a recommended backup strategy for smaller sites, and at the end of the article you wil find suggestions from Derick Schaefer from Copyblogger / Synthesis on backing up larger sites.

The article is here: WordPress Backup - The Plugin and The Plan

^^ This. I use WP Twin everytime when I need to backup my site. Always works like a charm. I have used it to backup and restore sites with more than 2000 posts.

Once again - I have to cut against the grain here - Warrior - if I were you, I'd use your web hosts' back-up feature which is on a server. Sure so is the plugin (as a file) however, what if a plugin update conflicts with another plugin or God forbid, the WPO platform itself and you lose your site.

Having your backup sit directly as its' own 'root file' on a server is much different than having it sit there, as a part of a plugin feature, on the server.

If you think such conflicts and lack of update expertise is unlikely, buy a subscription to Elegant Themes. Enough said.

Doesn't matter, the cpbackup is not going to run. The size of the account is too large & HostGator puts I believe a 3-5 gb cap on the cpbackup, otherwise known as the cpanel backup generator.

EDIT: I stand corrected. HG limits the cpbackup to 4gb. If the account in larger than 4gb, it will not run.

  • I received an email from Comcure this week and am trying their backup service. It's easy to set up, does automated daily backups and is free up to 2GB for a single website, although if you're using add-on domains then they all get included in the backup. They have reasonable rates if you're looking for more storage or want to back up multiple websites - http://comcure.com

    How about BlueHost?
Does it also have any backup restriction. I have a premium hosting plan.

Pretty sure they have a size restriction, as most of the large bargain basement hosts do. What that limit is with BlueHost, I'm not sure.

BlueHost also has removed the standard cPanel backup tool & replaced it with their own. They did this some time ago and failed to tell their customers which was basically extorting them & forcing them to stay since they couldn't run backups, BUT they basically advertise unlimited "EVERYTHING" on their site.

Hostgator caps their back ups at 4 GB's. Has anyone else out there used WP twin? I think it is a one time charge unlike backup buddy.

Another vote for WPTwin. Never had a problem with a backup.

I develop client sites on my own servers and use WPTwin to deploy them to their server once they sign off on the project. Instant website on their domain.

Also a great tool for 'cloning' websites. I have built base templates using my favorite themes and plugins and created a backup. When I start a new site, I deploy that file and within 5 minutes have a new site with my pre-configured theme and plugin settings. Saves me HOURS on each site I add.
