Your thoughts? Best content curator software?

Hi,

I'm about to start getting content curation into our business and want to use the best tool. I'm down to a shortlist of 4 content curation software tools

1. Instant Content Curator Pro from John Pearce/Hugh
2. Page One Curator from Paul Clifford
3. Instant Curator from Mike Johnson
4. CurationSoft from curationsoft.com

From my research I'm happy enough to trust either of these guys. I already own 1 (Instant Content Curator Pro) but before I bed deep into using it and getting fully knowledgeable on any specific software tool, I want to make sure I am using the best one.

I am using WordPress so the curation software needs to auto input the curated content into my WP site as a new page.

So from your experience of USING any of them, which do you think is best and why?

Does anyone know of any comparison charts for this? Opportunity for someone to create a comparison chart and use their own affiliate links?

Thanks in advance

UPDATE: I created this comparison and review page here

          Hi TheMaleRN

Is it still effective? What are your goals? If your aim is to best serve your readers, then yes, it is still effective. The content which you create is up to you so you control how effective and helpful it is.

If your aim is SEO, then it is most probably effective, if done right. Aim to please your readers before Google.

inheritance mentions Keyword XP "sucks." It was part of, and probably still is, the PageOne Curation suite by Paul Clifford.
Opening several Keyword tools simultaneously on the desktop, vying with each other, it becomes apparent Keyword XP is outdated, as far as I can ascertain.
It does not have the pulling power or reach of later tools by other developers.

Keyword XP like PageOne were first sold in 2012. I understand Paul is internally updating PageOne for current subscribers, but maybe not XP. Still, if the PageOne website was spammed up more recently, then most likely his attention has been turned to other projects first.

Does Kudani take the place of PageOne? If so, is there an upgrade path for PageOne members? If not, and whatever is the case, and judging by inheritance's comments of PageOne Support reply to him, then Paul and team need to make a distinction for the public where PageOn is going, becaue it is still obviously being used. I hope he continues to update PageOne as it works and can only be improved.

Duncan: As to Instant Content Curator Pro being dropped from the first list of four contenders, that judgement may be in need of review in 2014 as ICC goes through revamps and new iterations, evolving into ICC Express, with a new launch due. I listen to everything John Pearce has to say because he and his partners know the backend of things. Presentation and slickness fell short in ICC Pro. I do not know about the bugginess. But I do know we have come to expect more elegance of interface, simplicity on the eye, and ease of learning, yearly, monthly, as we face content management in a continually complexing environment.

content curation is not spun content, it is quoted content on your site that you expand upon and comment on. you also give links and credit to the site where you curated the content from.

This is a common practice with many of the large news sites.

    Hey Duncan,

I've been using 'Page One Curator from Paul Clifford' with great success for about a month now. I can easily manage all my blogs from this tool as well.

I normally setup 5-6 posts on each of authority blogs in under an hour. :-)

    Thanks Dontrell,

With Curation Traffic, it can integrate with Hootsuite for scheduled publishing. With PageOne Curator, can you future-schedule the publication of your posts?

UPDATE: Yes, PageOne CAN future-schedule the posts

      Duncan,

I've done curation and to be honest, I'm not sure that any software is really that helpful. Yes, it can aggregate articles for you, but there are lots of free tools including Google's "notify" that can also do that.

By far, the biggest time drain with curation is reading all the articles you find, analyzing what you're seeing, then preparing intelligent, thoughtful posts of your own that will add value to what you're going to present to your audience.

Anyone can grab a post, add "check out this article, blah, blah, blah" and call it curation. But that's not what your audience wants to see.

Being a curator is all about being the person that is able to quickly assimilate a large amount of information and provide quality article "choosing" (to re-post), thoughtful narrative, and a compelling reason to want to stay on the web site. No software can take a human's place in doing this. You are the business in curation.

      Good luck,

that's what I thought immediately when the whole "content curation" craze hit. Then I hooked it into another plugin someone else made called Unique Content Generator to spin and automate it and that's a solution.

If you're in a highly competitive niche where you may need to be posting videos or content automatically every hour, UCG can do it and it's pretty readable.

I also say that anyone who thinks this will still make good money 6 months from now is an idiot. Strictly short-term moneymaking.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks, and I would agreed that the 'assimilation' stage takes the longest - reading the articles. If I'm reading the content for myself, then that’s something I'm doing anyway (although I’ll be doing more of it and doing it more analytically if I know I’m going to be teaching or critiqueing it).

Personally I am very much of the 'quality' school of thought with content ('cared for, nurtured and critiqued'), rather than quantity, so the software I am looking for is not to spit out un-curated aggregation.

The best such tool I am now of the opinion to do quality aggregation (not Curation so much) is Instant Curator because it is less about showing considered content (it can spin and re-grab a different article automatically, ie without having been read by the site publisher) - but that is more of the "this is a good article [insert article]" type of production. I am working on a site I care about and want only the best content shown – and the best *parts* of content, which I have personally read (or one of my own expert team have read), filtered and it passes the criteria.

The reason for selecting which software to use carefully is so me and all my team all know the same tool, and invest the time to use one tool to fully and expertly, to curate more, better, faster.

    Thanks for your input

    Hi Duncan,
I got your heads up re your post here.

The thing is as much as I'd like to extol the virtues of PageOneCurator - it would always be seen as biased.. obviously ;-)

The only I can say for sure.. is mine is a complete tool that integrates keyword exploration and encodes your curated links correctly. It even supports the new "curators code" symbols. As far as I know, noone else does that.

..and it was the first curation app.

    all the best

    Hi Paul,

I was hoping you'd swing by here Thanks. I see no problem with you extolling the virtues of your app if it shows how you are different, because it helps me/us to make an informed decision, to make the best call for our business.

I am impressed with your tool from what I have seen of it. I don't know if you saw my Support message I sent into your team - asking about future-scheduling the posts? If I want to drip-feed the posts to publish daily but curate them all on a Monday for example? I know that Traffic Curation (WP plugin) can integrate with Hootsuite for future-scheduling publication. Is there anything similar with PageOne Curation?

I'm about to publish a blog post with my findings so far, and I'd love if you could check it for accuracy from your point of view. I'll drop you a line when that's live.

    Thanks

Thank you Duncan and everyone for posting your thoughts. I'll go read the article now.

The one thing I do wish for is some way that I could use PageOne Curator (or any of the other programs) in someplace other than just my Wordpress sites such as:
html sites, blogger blogs, wikis, and Squidoo pages.

Could I just do a copy paste into a regular html page and have all the code work?

I feel like I'm an excellent candidate for curation, because I am a very fast and voracious reader. The idea of building sites out of content that I read naturally and learning all kinds of new things with the ability to preserve it online with notes and excerpts of the best parts of the articles is VERY exciting.

The most versatile as far s I can see is CurationSoft because it is a drag and drop tool. You can drag and drop your curated content into WordPress, Joomla etc

Willsig - thanks - I'll have a look at that, although being limited to only 2 topics is, well, limiting

Duncan! I noticed that about CurationSoft. The only thing I don't like is that it seems to automatically "curate" the summary paragraph instead of being able to highlight the portion I want to curate which it seems to be what happens with PageOne.

Did I get that part correct?

BTW, nice article. I dropped you a comment there.

As far as I can see, yes, it automatically takes the paragraph. You can then edit it and make comments. I'm now contacting their Support to double check this.

The best option it seems, for the option to curate each paragraph yourself and choose it, is either PageOne Curator or Curation Traffic. I'll update the blog post. Thanks

It looks like when you corrected the links on your article that you switched some of the column info in each. The price for PageOne is $47 and $97 for multi-user (but right now thats under Curation traffic). I think all the info listed in the PageOne column (except the customer service note) seems like the info Curation traffic and vice versa.

Hey Duncan, I am not used to with content curation and don't really know how does it works. Would you plz like to elaborate this process to me? Also as @agmccall said that curation means posting contents from other sources giving credit to that site, isn't this a violation of duplicate content policy?

BRWI - Thanks. I agree - I'm not sure the spin option is the way I would go, purely because I am specifically wanting to curate great content for genuine curation reasons, for useful, helpful content, rather than for Google-chasing. Hence why I've chosen not to go with Mike Johnson's Instant Curator (Mike, I'm happy to stand corrected if you can chip-in).

    I'm aiming for quality.

I am using it to search new content for my readers to enjoy. Posting interesting and informative Youtube videos, articles and feeds will be much easier.

So overall I think this is the best out there. If you have a pinterest page CurationSoft will be the best tool for you to post content in your pinterest page.

    Thanks Jag,
I think it is a really close-run thing between PageOne, CurationSoft and Curation Traffic.
CurationSoft for long-curation (multiple source articles in one post)
PageOne and Curation Traffic for close-detail and short-curation (only one source article) with details analysis, paragraph by paragraph.

That is my thoughts on this so far. I'm going to let this roll for a couple days more then make a decision next week, and get my team all into which ever tool we choose.

I'm curious why you group PageOne w/ Curation Traffic as short-curation. Curation Traffic only allows you to use only one-source, but PageOne definitely allows you to quote many sources (and choose which parts of the source material you want to curate.)

IMHO, PageOne and CurationSoft are the two big contenders for longer more detailed curation. I give CurationSoft points for not being restricted to Wordpress. However, PageOne allows you to choose what portions of the original source material you'd like to curate. Also, Curation soft has an annual fee vs a one-time fee.

For me, I'd love it if PageOne was available for Squidoo lenses and non-wordpress blogs. HOwever, I am leaning toward it anyway.

If the PageOne guy is still here, does he know a workaround for exporting articles into non-wordpress sites?

If you want quality and good tools for content curation it doesn't really matter if it is an annual fee or a one time fee. There is definitely a reason behind different price marketing and different strategy when it comes to pricing.

But If I'm really satisfied with the tool I don't even care about the pricing plan. Since Curationsoft works also with non wordpress blogs this is really a plus for them.

A couple of points on the above.

CurationSoft only takes the summary of a feed. This what the publisher wants you to see.. and often its very thin - so its difficult really to express your context around that. Of course by just pulling the summary - its very fast, as technically its easy to do.

For PageOne you can pull, select and copy any part of the article.

Lastly - if you don't have Wordpress, you can create your article all ready to go in the PageOne editor. Then click on the 'source' button. This will show the underlying HTML - which you can then paste into any website on the planet.

        Hope that helps
        Paul

It sure does! My plan is to curate information and sources that are as necessarily as "on the nose" as like most people are doing. For instance curating an article on books all on the same theme or a profile on a historical figure. Only certain things would be relative to my narrative. So I definitely want the power to choose what part of the article I'm curating. The other way to me is like doing a research paper, but only being able to quote the opening paragraph (not as versatile and makes for less creative content.)

Knowing that I can use PageOne on Wordpress and anything with html, that it's cheaper, AND that you can cite multiple sources makes it the winner for me.

PageOne certainly seems more what you want, to be able to analyse and chew over certain parts of the article

Curation Traffic's plus-points are the Bookmarklet, ability to dig into each paragraph, plus the Ultimate Call To Action, which looks powerful - but I'd rather purchase that extra plugin separately IF the CT tool itself were not the perfect one for me.

CurationSoft's main plus-point is the drag-and-drop aspect for speed.

But for quality analysis you're going to want to dig deeper into each article.

I wouldn't let the pricing structure put you off making the right decision for you. They are more or less the same price over a 1 or 2 year period, depending on which option you get. Choose the right one for your business and what you need. The price will seem immaterial when you look back in 1 year's time.

For me, I would be needing this for me AND my team so they can write and curate, so the price difference is minimal.

That said, PageOne looks the right one for you, for its use in other non-WordPress tools. For me, I'm only concerned with WordPress, so from that aspect, either of the top 3 would do, but also for me, it looks like PageOne Curator is coming out tops.

I'll update the blog post with all this, mull it over this weekend and make a decision Monday.

        Thanks

If I'm really satisfied with the tool I don't even care about the pricing plan. Since Curationsoft works also with non wordpress blogs this is really a plus for them.
For the record price is not THE deciding factor, but recurring expenses vs fixed expenses definitely factor into business decisions for me. Would I pay more for the right tool? Of course. Would I consider that the right tool is less expensive a bonus? Heck yeah! And now that I know I can use PageOne on non wordpress blogs, as well as choose which part of the article I want to quote, I can't see the CurationSoft as the ideal product for me.

I think our definition of short curation is different. I was under the impression that short curation was exactly as used in the Curation Traffic website:

The focus of our Curation Taffic is really what we consider short form curation ... We call this short form because it’s one single source and your typically just adding commentary around that one topic.
Using this definition, PageOne is definitely not short curation. I just thought I'd mention it in case you were going to include that in your update article. I think it would be very confusing and misleading to group PageOne w/ Curation Traffic as short form curation when just like CurationSoft (which you consider long form) you can cite from just as many sources.

I've updated the blog post for greater clarity on that, including short/long definition and comment.

I've got the Page One Curator but the first look of it, it is not really a user friendly software. I think there is a learning curve in using it. There is a lot of things going on the software. And where is the tutorials on using it?

I know a lot of people who have done content curration to get traffic to their website, because I pressume you are doing this to get traffic. I have also tried it on one of my sites and it messed up my alexa ranking. So the best thing would be to always have original content on your site which the search engines prefer and love.

      Hi Sam,

My main aim (and the aim of curation) is

      1. Great helpful content for readers, and
      2. Traffic

It depends on the site your working on. If its your main site (a is the case for me), I am more keen on the quality helpful content angle, rather than the traffic.

If and when the traffic follows, I'm happy with that

I would like to learn more about Page One Curator as I'm very much interested in bringing Search Engine traffic to my sites without being going into the pains of creating quality content myself (I know I'm lazy).

Any real websites out there that use this app?

    Thanks.

      Hi Jack,

I did look into the Curation Fire software and updated the review to reflect that. Personally I cant see that it offers anything over the over 3 main contenders

      Cheers

I'm going through the training videos right now and they are horrible. Not in any comprehensible order and just thrown together on a Youtube page. The sales videos he has are done very well done and with voice-overs but the ones that are for training after you already bought the product are crap. The instructions are typed out over the software so sometimes what they are trying to describe in the typing is blocked. Someone who is new to the software will be lost before even opening the thing up.

I have spent most of the day checking out CurationSoft. Now it looks like I have to spend the rest of the day checking out PageOne.

PageOne has always left a bad taste in my mouth because of their assocoiation with Harlan Kilstein in the past, not exactly a likeable person. But I will give it a good look over anyway.

Most of the comments about CurationSoft here may need changing. It is now version 3 and I think it will be hard to beat. It does have a lifetime license for use on 3 computers, PageOne can be used on 5 computers. CurationSoft V3 now also has an expand button to show the full article with images and although it is not really clear to me, it appears that you can now select as much of the article as you would like for the snippet.

Another big thing with me was the ability to curate to Facebook Fan Pages. CurationSoft informed me, very quickly after emailing them today, that they are working on posting to Facebook Fan Pages right now. Not sure about PageOne and Facebook fan pages yet.

I agree about the videos for CurationSoft jabro. I was thinking the very same thing as I watched them. Very poor. Many of the videos are repeated. There is no video of the complete process of someone searching for content and developing and adding a post. Very sloppy.

BTW Thanks a lot for all your work DuncanD, it was just what I was looking for.

      Duncan,

We purchased PageOne Curator based on your review. It was a good review but their support is TERRIBLE. No replies to support tickets or email and their software is really buggy.

I think I am going to be asking for a refund unless I hear back from them on the issues I found in their product.

Should have looked at their support page first:
      https://pageonetraffic.zendesk.com/f...ature-Requests
full of spam and garbage. Nobody is home at Page One apparently.

OK finished checking out PageOne, they were not helpful at all. I emailed asking for information on there software and they sent back a short email directing me to their useless homepage where I have been many times and there is little useless information. They also directed me into a sales funnel to another curation product of theirs that costs $197 a year or $37 a month. In the funnel they offered me Keyword XP if I took their offer for Kudani. I already own Keyword XP with some PLR rights I believe. Last time I looked it sucked bad.

I don't believe they are interested in selling PageOne or they would have provided the information I asked for. They seem more inclined to push their $200.00 a year product. So, I have decided to go with CurationSoft. I will post the email I sent to them below, and below that the email they sent to me.

    My Email to PageOne.

This is a sales related question.

In my search for curation software I have narrowed my choices down to PageOne and CurationSoft. I have found a lot of information on the CurationSoft site on features of the software. They provide a full list of the content sources they make available and the sites we will be able to post to with CurationSoft as well as a lot of other information. They have curation lessons and they also have a lot of videos showing the software in action. I agree they are not great videos but I can't seem to find anything even close on your site.

I did find your Youtube channel but found it lacking in any videos about PageOne. There are videos listed there on many other software programs but nothing of any significance that I could see regarding PageOne. Am I by any chance not getting to the right Youtube channel? Maybe the PageOne videos are getting lost in the volume of other videos? Do you have any training videos or training information? Could you point me to them?

Why are the forum threads on your support page filled with gibberish? It certainly does not look very professional.

I am trying to decide between CurationSoft and PageOne for my curation software. Can you give me any information, such as what sources we would be able to use for our content and exactly what types of sites we will be able to post to? Also could you please include any other sales information you can provide that might help me decide to pick PageOne over CurationSoft. Do you even have a sales page, or is your home page it?

There is a thread on the Warrior forum comparing the various curation software. It would be nice to see some information input from you there. A link to the thread is just below.

    Awaiting your reply,

    Hi Johnnie,
Let me go ahead and send you to the sales page with the list of PageOne Traffic products. For your curation needs, I would recommend taking a look at Kudani. It is a great program for those who do a lot of curation, and can be used by any feed, even "unknown" feeds that you subscribe to.

    Hi JayZeey,

I was about to write back to you that Paul is from my expereince an ethical marketer, and is usually quite responsive and - then I see he has already responded here for you.

I dont know where you were contacting them for support - I have found them to be responsive. I am sure that Paul will help you out with what you need. Maybe he can give you a URL for their current support system?

I have no affiliation with Paul, I simply liked what I saw of their product. I have had a quick review of Kudani and that does seem a valid option, as a bigger, more inclusive tool

    Good luck
