Affiliate Marketing - Who is actually making money???

Hey guys,

Jim cockrum mentions an interesting point in his ebook. He basically downplays all forms of "system based IM" / affiliate marketing / SEO based business models / selling ebooks / starting up an e-commerce store etc. because he claims the odds are highly stacked against us at a mere 2% success rate.

This would technically mean there are hundreds of thousands of IM's trying to make money online blindly buying the next product or wasting hours upon hours trying out the latest 'system' on the scene but not actually succeeding with any form of ROI.

This has completely thrown me off balance as I am really trying to avoid heading down the wrong path with the wrong system/mentor and wasting a whole lot of time and money in the process.

So I ask this question: Can anybody here actually confirm that they have followed someones system and have started to make a semi decent form of side income (at least 2k profit per month).

I am not referring to things like (I have learnt new skills that will come in handy later, or I am ranking on page 1 in google for particular keywords but not making any money or "the training program was easy to follow for a beginner and things of this nature. I am referring specifically to consistent profit month in month out?

Thanks,
Frustrated Beginner

That to me is the best IM course of 2012.
It covers everything in step-by-step detail from mindset, setting your foundation right all the way to getting traffic for your sites.

The best "system" for making money is to focus on "lead generation" and then figure out how to monetize your leads.

Select a market that you want to serve and then help your market solve their problems. This will allow you to build an audience and generate a list (i.e. leads). Once you have a list, you have a real business. Keep in mind that a business is what is going to take you to where you want to go -- not a "money making system."

Excellent points. Build a list in a niche are truly interested in, have expertise in...give this list valuable information all of the time...build a relationship with them. Once they see you as an expert give them products that you really think will help them and explain why. They will buy, and you will make money. Webinars convert well, so consider becoming an affiliate for products that offer a webinar. Check out options on webinarswaps.com.

I agree to focus on lead generation and then keep a close eye on your numbers . Click threw rate ,conversion rate, and so on. Once you learn lead generation you can take it to local business and run campaigns for them generating leads and sell them but lead of whatever you work out with business owner.

Remember that affiliate marketing is nothing more then a math equation .
How much it cost you to convert your visitors and optimizing to better your numbers .
Traffic & Conversions master them and you can write your own ticket.

      Boatree:

I never discuss how much money I make for a few different reasons. First of all, I believe very few income claims that internet marketers make and I would not expect you to believe me if I made such claims. I'll just say this -- I am a full-time "entrepreneur." I run both an offline business and I make money online with several sites (less than 10). Am I making enough to go full-time with my online projects? No -- but I'm getting close.

I will be selling my offline business sometime in 2013 and then I will go full-time as a web entrepreneur. My goal is to "Go Pro" by June 1, 2013.

As for recommended training products, if you want to learn affiliate marketing, Mark Ling's Affiloblueprint 3.0 is very good. For someone who is new to this business, Mark's course is a great place to start.

Here are a few lessons that I learned the past few years that have been a great help to me and I hope they will also help you move forward:

      1. The marketer "X" said this and it really stuck with me (I'm paraphrasing): "If you are going to get into affiliate marketing, pick one market and then STICK YOUR FORK IN IT!!" -- In other words, pick one market and then go deep into that market. Serve this one market with great content. Help them solve their problems and then "List Build" in that market. The great Mark Joyner states that a list is what breathes oxygen into an online business. I completely agree with him.

A very successful marketer and Warrior by the name of Kim Roach said that she struggled for a couple years until she started focusing on this one thing: List Building. Once she made list building the focus of her activity, her business exploded.

      2. Look at how other successful internet marketers "Market" their business. In many cases you can learn more by watching how marketers promote their products than you can by purchasing and studying their products. Dan Kennedy states that if you want to become successful, you need to become a serious student of your business. This means learning from others who are successful. What are they selling? How are they list building? What did they offer you to get you on their list? What does their marketing funnel look like? How are they generating traffic? How did they find you?

      3. I heard James Schramko state this excellent advice multiple times: "You need to stop consuming content and you need to start CREATING content." Yes, if you are new to this business you do need to consume some content in order to get a base of knowledge that will allow you to move forward. But don't get into "consumption mode" where you are researching and studying every product under the sun. At some point you have to stop reading and consuming and you have to start adding value to the marketplace -- and that means creating your own content. Also, you need to become mostly a "seller" instead of a "buyer."

      4. Before you build any site, ask yourself these two questions: "How am I going to generate traffic? And, how am I going to monetize that traffic?" Do not invest your time in a project unless you know how you are going to both generate traffic and then monetize that traffic.

      5. Think like an "entrepreneur" and not like an "opportunity seeker." Stop focusing on "ways to make money" and start focusing on building a real business. Think long-term, not short-term.

      6. "Speed of implementation" is critical. The faster you implement new strategies and tactics the faster you will get results. I've heard more than one successful internet marketer say that speed of implementation is the one thing that separates the very successful from those who struggle. Those who are successful implement new tactics and strategies in their business "As" they learn them. While those who struggle will learn a new business tactic or strategy, and then they will continue researching for more tactics and strategies. And the sad reality is that they rarely implement what they learn. The bottom line is this: Your growth as an entrepreneur and the growth of your business will both benefit in a huge way once you start applying what you are learning.

      7. Think of everything as a "Test" -- this is a great way to beat procrastination. When you start thinking of your projects as a test, in your mind they no longer have to be perfect because, after all, it's just a test. Just put stuff out there and see what works. Most people never move on their ideas because they are waiting for the conditions to be perfect before they launch. Screw that. Get your stuff out there and then improve it while it is making you money. A less then perfect site that has been launched will be significantly more profitable than a perfect site that is waiting to be launched.

Take action and let go of your attachment to the result.

      8. Work on developing your skills, especially your marketing skills. You can learn more in a direct marketing classic like Claude Hopkin's "Scientific Advertising" than you can in most $2000 internet marketing products.

I could write about this stuff for days. But off the top of my head these are some valuable lessons I learned the past few years that have helped me move forward.

I wish you all the best.

I've spoken directly with literally hundreds of affiliate marketers. Yes, some do succeed, but it's almost always temporary and rare.

The industry behind affiliate marketing is one that flashes big checks to gullible opportunity seekers and then spoon feeds and sells them useless skills slowly and steadily until burnout happens and the student sulks away, ideally blaming themselves for "not getting it". There's not one expert that can dispute that the vast majority of the "students" they are teaching are experiencing EXACTLY what I just described.

Keep in mind, I've made millions selling other people's products using affiliate links and have won multiple contests that have launched new products as a top performing affiliate, but I don't focus on "affiliate marketing".

I focus on building a "real business" with real value, and an ever growing customer list (email).

There are several reasons for my stance on affiliate marketing, and you can read more on my blog, but here are some ideas that come instantly to mind..

As an aff marketer you are, in effect, competing with the owners of the products you are promoting. You are building their business, and if they had their way, they'd do it themselves and cut you out. (wouldn't you?)

Even one of the most successful affiliate marketers on the planet, "Shoemoney" says that "affiliate marketing is not a business model". Grow your own biz was the conclusion I recall in that article.

I'd rather build my own business, control my own products, and not risk waking up one day to find out that the business affiliate terms of the product I was promoting have changed and I'm out... or the google algorithm just pushed me to page 432, or a new law has made my biz irrelevant.

If you do affiliate marketing do it the RIGHT way by growing a loyal audience that listens to you and respects your endorsements. Sell them stuff that will truly help them get what they need and are looking for. I have customers that have been growing businesses using my advice and buying stuff I've recommended for over a decade...and they trust me like a brother b/c I take my advice that seriously. That's affiliate marketing done right.

Thanks Jim, I am also a Newbie and appreciate your input. I actually purchased Shoemoneys ShoeIn Money system to help me learn about building my online business through website building and monetization. The one thing I really like about Shoemoney is his no BS, tell it like he thinks it, style. I want to build websites around products and or services I believe in, not like some of the crap that has been hitting my inbox since I started on my internet marketing journey 6 months ago. I realize it will take time, but I want to create something I can be proud of, and will support me, not something that will "create me millions overnight by robbing people blind and giving them garbage." A big thank you to all Warriors for sharing their Valuable Input.

This is an awesome thread and I agree with all of it. The sooner you start treating it like a business by getting leads and building trust the sooner you make $. So many get so frustrated buying product and I was the same way until I realized that every long time successful marketer had one thing in common and that was they had a list.

You have to get out of the quick buck mindset and stop looking at it as simple as throwing up a sales page and offer and making money up front because it most likely or at the very least the majority of the time will NOT WORK.

Instead focus on learning the craft of building good funnels and follow up emails that warm leads and really helps them. Only then can you start seeing consistent sales.

I think you should have the answer by now, its list building! As far as what particular system to follow, well you should try a few and see which one suits your style.

On a side note, I lost a 100k a year client by not having them on a list.

    1) Promote only affiliate products that you could buy for yourself
    2) trafic, list building, autoresponders
    3) you can, after a while, create your own product and make 100% commission !

There is no way that your aff business model won't work if you've got traffic and good offers to promote !

The biggest challenge in IM is people don't stick to one system. They keep moving from one system to another. They start with something more complicated, don't have proper support for the system they buy and later are lost because they are not really clear whether they are doing it the right way.

People who stick to any one of the IM business model, work on it correctly, consistently, they are bound to be successful

I think you're going about this all wrong. The reason only 2% make it is because they are looking for a "system" that will instantly provide them $$$ monthly.

There is a learning curve with IM. You need to dive in and DO things. We'd all be kidding ourselves if we said that we've never paid for countless programs that never amounted to a hill of beans. I get that. But honestly, probably everything you need to know to be successful is right here on the Warrior Forum.

    1) Put together a website on a topic you're passionate about.
    2) Write content consistently for that website
    3) Find a product to sell as an affiliate related to that website
    4) Repeat for your next topic

The rest of the pieces will fall into place as you start...and you'll uncover tips along the way that make it easier/more profitable/etc. Point is - take action NOW and start. Don't just look for the next book to read or the next system to join.

Very wise words that any newbie should talk to heart and spend a day thinking about.

I said something similar in a recent interview-

4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started blogging?

I wish I knew that you could make money.

Although thinking about it perhaps itís good that I didn't know you could make money on the internet when I first started out writing games reviews.

I was never doing it for the money - it was a volunteer position.

I was doing it because I loved writing, I loved the internet and I loved playing games. I was combining 3 passions into a fun filled super orgy.

My father always said to me - find your passion in life & then find a way to make money with it.

If you can do that, you will never 'work' another day in your life.

Well I was certainly following my passion and I still am to this day although I haven't played a game in a long time.

I believe this is what separates me from a lot of people. A lot of the people I speak to are purely getting into blogging and SEO to make money.

No other motivation other than to make cold hard cash.

      Quickly.

The truth is people that just want to make money quickly will never make any real money or build a long term sustainable business online.

They will buy the dream over and over though
In a strange way I guess I sort of already knew what I needed to know when I first started.

      I just didn't know it.

Follow your passion, not the money.

I however have a passion for my football club and menswear. Whenever you say sports site, people immediately throw betting and football training programmes in your face saying 'promote that'. Questions are:

        1. How do you build your list from betting?

        2. People who usually bet through your link are already registered so you get no commissions.

        3. Very few people will buy a football clickbank product if we're true to ourselves; maybe for their kids, so how do you cut it?

        4. It seems the people making money in IM are the 'How to start a blog/make money online' and the Amazon product review/health niche guys or am I wrong?

I closed up my weightloss blog because since I was not passionate about it, I could not add value. I decided to dig into my football site since I have passion for it and menswear and I have only made about $60 in 1 year.

I would like the kind and wise warriors of this forum to give advice please.

Affiliate marketing accounts for around $30k of my current monthly income and it has been fluctuating between $20k and $30k per month for the past 5 years. If I had more time to devote to affiliate marketing I know I could do much more but developing and marketing industry software keeps me pretty busy, brings in more income and is my company's focus.

          Hi,

Ok so you have the passion side down, the most important bit most people are lacking.

First of all take a step bag and get out of the betting mindset and get into the people mindset.

Think about the types of people that are likely to visit your site. I'll give you 2 examples from my blog-

          The complete newbie
          The seasoned pro

Both of these people although are interested in internet marketing, have very different problems/fears/issues.

So if you list 5 problems, 5 goals and 5 ways you can help each audience type you can get a good understanding for 'who' they are.

This allows you to start thinking about a content strategy to deliver that also steps outside of the betting niche transcending into other niches.

For example anyone interested in sports betting probably has an interesting in buying tickets for sporting events?

If you can capture what specific sport interests them (through a hidden field in the aweber signup form, for example if they signed up via a post in the boxing category) then you can also begin to think of other ways to transcend away from betting into other niches.

Anyone reading a boxing post would probably be interested in a boxing home training product etc.

Step back and open your mindset a little, go drink a beer in the sun while your doing that - it helps

Information is the key, you need to get all the information you can before going with a specific affiliate product or program. Build a list of pros and cons. I learned from my mistakes. When I started I was looking for a fast money making opportunity but is not that easy, I was only wasting my time and money joining every new program out there thinking that it was the opportunity I was looking for. Unfortunately it was not that easy, as someone here mentioned, there is a learning curve and like in every business, you need to invest and don't expect to see profits in the first months. You have to be consistent. I am earning a good income now, not the one I expect but I am still learning to reach my goals.

There is no saturation. Just change the way you look at it and instead of seeing it as saturation, consider it an invitation to go take your slice of the pie since there is plenty to go around for everyone.

I kicked open the door to a niche that you would consider saturated and I'm making thousands monthly from it in a relatively short amount of time.

But I do more than just that.

Last 3 months I did $48,500 as an affiliate.

Will be doing $40K - $50K per month by the end of the year.

As with anything, you must be persistent and aggressvie and have a goal to shoot for.

Great advice - what I tend to find in 'saturated' niches is everyone is doing the same thing, which creates great oppertunity.

Also just because a niche is competitive in terms of rankings/SEO - doesn't make it a competitive niche.

Great simple advice and quite motivating actually. The trend seems that people hop on the wagon then fall-off after not having much success.

I have not really made any money online yet as an affiliate but have remained motivated especially, in part, to great posts like this.

      Thanks!

Try to make research and find people who are really GURU, not all who claims they are guru.
Contact them. Ask about coaching. It is not cheap, but it is apparently cheaper than trying and falling path. Good luck!

There are no step-by-step systems that guarantee results. If it was that easy everyone would be doing it and be successful at it. What's important is you stand the rationale for each step and know how to think independently. Just because what Guru X says worked for him doesn't mean it will work for you. Every website is different, requires different backlinks, different type of content, etc. Learn how affiliate marketing works, choose a marketing format (SEO traffic, media buys, e-mail marketing, etc), understand the logic behind it, and just get really good at it through traffic.

Sorry to Chime in on the Subject But I have to transgress the fact that if people keep buying more and more models of businesses online from E-books and Courses then you don't Actually Learn anything in my option.

It's All about Planning your Business as many on here would tell you. Create a plan, Stick with it & follow it through

I have made Money online so many times but not the Big amounts as of yet. Just a comfortable amount to put back into projects I am working on & That's one rule also which I find annoying with some system type IM programs Where the New guy sees someone in a flash car and nice big house in their video sales page.

Yet so many Do not realise that as in a offline Business if you don't put back into your business it will collapse in IM you have to put money back into the Business to achieve more out. Same as any business I suppose.

  • This is hilarious! Well I agree that with the right technique one could excel in affiliate marketing. One such way is through Amazon Affiliate Marketing! Market the right products on the right page that has good traffic and you would see money coming in. Say you manage to direct someone to Amazon's $300 worth product you get 4% and that is $ 12. The good thing is you don't put in that much effort to get this amount of money

    Hey Boatre,
Are you still out there? Hmm, guess not. Another one bites the dust.
Noobs always looking for the mgic button.

A bunch of great advice is in this thread.....for any that are still struggling to find success. I was going to write a few pearls of wisdom, but I think Jim Cockrum hit the mark with his post.

You have to treat the process as a business. Build and develope your assets. Deliver value to the people who give you money. They will give you more.

it is the same in any, and I mean any business. Does not matter if you are a plumber or burger flipper. You are selling your services. Everybody sells. IM is no different. Deliver value, cater to marketplace needs and solve problems. People will give you money.

Sell junk and their won't be a second sale. Word gets around. If your plumbing job leaks or you burn the burgers, you're dead.

If your IM business is not run like a business, you will always be chasing the shiny object and wishing. Take action, develope and nurture a list, sell good stuff to people who buy. Do what you are good at and hire people who do things better than you.

It is actually one reliable source of income given that the affiliate website is legit.

I would say 2% is being generous about the number of people who actually make enough income to live off of.

    It's probably more like 0.1%.

But that's including the tons of people who just try one thing, fail, then give up.

The success rate is actually pretty low.
But let me tell you something - the biggest money that is made in the affiliate market is made by people who make products in the IM niche. Mots of the money that is made by gurus comes from WSO or forums where they "teach" you how to make money.

I was in IM for pretty long, made more then 100000$ through few years from CB and PPV but being an affiliate now a days - sucks.

SEO - can't trust it now. NOBODY can guarantee you anything. Google doesn't like websites set up for selling one product only and with algorithm updates that comes every few months you can find one morning that most of your sites are out of business.

Article marketing - I guess this one still works, probably the only method that can be trusted but it's pretty hard to scale up there. Very slow but but it's like a concrete and can make you money for a long period of time.

PPV - FAST,RISKY and the best source of traffic from my point of view. But you are still very limited there. CPA offers tend to expire fast when you drive a lot of leads to one offer so it's a full time job there to maintain a nice profit. In the CPA-PPV area you can make today 300$ and next day the offer is gone and you are left with sweet memories only. Some will tell you "just find another similar offer" but "similar" is not the same and it probably won't convert as good or even be profitable.

My best advice to you - all the money you make online, save it and invest it in the long run like real estate. Don't look at all the people who claim to make hundreds per day because they will probably now reveal you how they do it, they can sell you another rewritten PLR they bought for 3.97$ convincing you that it's the next secret source of traffic they discovered 2 days ago.

In my opinion the biggest money you can earn today is a WSO creator.
    Good luck.

Is it a consistent income? Also where/how did you learn PPV & CPA? And how much capital did you start with or would you recommend someone start with?

I know you didn't ask me but I'll let my self to answer.

I started with 2k clean capital for advertising only - you need that in case you catch a great campaign and need to scale it up.

The income cannot be concrete consistent like article marketing+ClickBank somply because the offers tend to expire. There are offers which alive for a very long time, I think that the reason for that is that they don't get much leads usually, but of course it's not always like that.

    Good luck man

I'm just starting with this, but I feel there is a lot of good information out their. I think the 2% number is low because people try it realize its not a get rich fast scheme and quit. If you look at the systems and spend time doing it, you'll have a chance.
