Which Antivirus are you using?

Hi all, I have been using kaspersky antivirus but still some worms get their way through. Which antivirus do you have and is it better?

    I have used AVG for years and have never had a problem with them. It has always done a great job of finding and eliminating viruses. Plus you can download the application for free which if I remember right, it comes with spyware and adware scanner combined with the program also.

    I hope that helps. Who knows, there could be a better program out there than AVG that I don't even know about.

    • I am using the Nod32. It has been many years and still going strong. You can download the free trial to get rid of the pesky worms.

      I was using Norton until my subscription expired. As soon as I removed the Norton files my computer started working normally again. It was crashing like crazy, well to the point I was not doing any of my IM work.

      I am now using the free AVG program. I have not had any problems with anything since setting it up. It seems to do an excellent job with keeping those nasty viruses out.

    I use AVG and ClamAV - happy with both. Also there have been several threads like this which you can find using the search function of the board - and there was one recently in the OT board too.

    I like ClamAV since I run several servers - and the antivirus for servers from the commercial houses are pricey. And the team at ClamAV updates their signatures rather quickly - most times before the major folks do.

  • I am using kaspersky also. Do you notice that it makes the your computer run more slowly? That's bad news about the worms !
  • Another vote for AVG. It's free and I've never had a virus get through it. AND, another bonus, it doesn't mess up my computer like Norton or McAffee did many years ago. It's like they weren't compatible with other programs on my computer.

    • Don't believe it! Norton may be better than it was, but it's still a resource hog. I bought it because of the good reviews it was getting - I'm getting rid of it.

      I was using Panda, it worked great, but when my subscription ran out my wife was away and she had my credit card so I wasn't able to renew. That stupid warning popped up every 5 minutes that I needed to renew. Even after I checked the box not to show the notification again, it still popped up every 5 minutes. It annoyed me so much I won't use it again.

      So, thanks for the recommendations for AVG, I'll be giving it a try next.

    • Yeah, I've used Norton forever, and it's definitely been improving over the last couple of years. I hope they keep it up.

  • Nod32 is my first choice... I've been using it for years and I like it because it's light and not intrusive, unlike norton that invaded my system
  • For a free solution, you may also want to look at comodo antivirus as well
  • I use KIS works pretty well,but before on my 32 bit windows I've used Zonealarm which far more better blocking intrusions but makes comp slower.

    • I used to use Norton, but it slowed my machine down to a snail's pace. After a bit of research I choose NOD32. I've never looked back. It's effective and doesn't have a noticable effect on performance.

      I'm a heavy surfer, I surf all over the Internet, and that includes surfing adult entertainment websites on a sporadic basis. I've had some computer technicians try and talk me into using Norton 360. And I've read reviews on C-Net and elsewhere from people who curse at Norton. I have no opinion of Norton other than the fact that some 360 users are not happy with 360.

      I've been using Avast going on three years now. Avast is and has been on top of the recent Conflicker issue. They addressed that issue specifically and sent a message to each and every user about how they're aware of Conflicker back when Conflicker was casting fear worldwide.

      Be it Conflicker or any other virus, Avast has never let me down. My computer has never been in the shop. Thank you, Avast, for the great job you do in protecting one of mans greatest inventions

  • Ok...here's my 2 cents. (That and $3.00 still won't get you a decent cup of Starbucks coffee this morning.

    These things change all the time...I used to use AVG...then switched to PCTools which was a huge improvement over AVG and seemed to catch everything...Until about 9 months ago when I was getting hammered with a new virus every week.

    Now, I'd always HATED Norton and McAfee because they were resource hogs. BUT...under new management Norton really has their act together. Just on a whim I decided to switch to Norton this year and I have been really impressed. The Live Update feature is what I am most impressed with...and it is catching everything so far.

    So, the moral of this post is...software changes rapidly...just because 1 tool was a dog a few years ago doesn't mean it's a dog today.

    • Norton has always had Live Updates. You must be referring to the 2009 version that has the pulse updates that updates definitions every 8 seconds and the actual software every 8 hours.

      Yea, it's real nice I love it. The SONAR feature of NIS2009 is also amazing. ^^
  • Had an old Norton subscription. It ended and I couldn't bother to renew it. Currently I just do an online free scan every week from Kasperky and Panda. Never had a virus. You need to use common sense when browsing and downloading from da intarwebs.

  • Yeah, and if you have Norton you cannot have any other antivirus installed on your pc or it starts working abnormal.

    Avast also slows down my system a lot and I've been using AVG since then. It's wonderful. There's new virus database update almost everyday. This is something others don't have.

  • Used AVG in the past but currently have McAfee installed. Its quite good on my Vista machine but I have some laptops running XP and its slowedt them down enormously.

    Kaspersky seems to have a smaller footprint so might try that next time.

    As for letting viruses through - to be honest, all the AV products are continually playing catchup and leapfrogging each other so its a bit of a lottery at times whether you'll be hit.

    Make sure you follow sound practices & any of the top selling products should be OK.

    I also run malwarebytes once in a while just to make sure my computer is clean.

      I am not an ingrate. When it comes to these type of commodities I can't be an ingrate. So I donate a dollar a couple of times a year to Wikipedia, CCleaner and Pop Peeper.       I purchased Roboform with real money, paid for it outright because I store a ton of passwords. I will not and cannot live without Roboform. Roboform is the 8th wonder of the world. I use Roboform 20-100 times a day.

      If you don't know what Roboform is, I'd imagine good old, reliable Wikipedia has a page on it. And that's the beauty of Wikipedia. They have a page on everything, including things like the L.A. riots of 1992, the Snickers candy bar and pubic hair (yes, even pubic hair!).

      So that's why I say the age old saying YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR is now, thanks to the Internet, obsolete, buried in a casket, cremated, thrown out to sea, dust in the wind, past tense, out with the trash, and totally invalid

      Note to rookie detectives who are out there trying to help solve a murder: anyone who uses the phrase YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR is probrably computer illiterate, so don't be fooled! We know that there are a lot of gangsters who are computer savvy. Some of them have a MySpace page. But you rookies should know that I spoke to a woman from Stockton, California just the other day who said that there are a lot of people in her community who are computer illiterate. She works in the public sector, her boots are on the ground out on the front line 6-7 days a week interacting with people in her community. So she knows what she's talking about. There are still a lot of middle class or lower middle class people out there that have never booted up a computer.

    • I've been using AVG for quite some time. I guess it doesn't matter what anti-virus software you are using as long as you have it auto updated every time.
    • I've been paying Norton for a couple of year, but now I want to switch to Avast which is free and probably better.
    • Kaspersky has saved my arse so many times! It's 10x better then Norton in my opinion.

    • I have been using Norton Antivirus (internet security edition) and have never had any problems. As mentioned earlier it can slow your computer, but if you defrag the hd monthly this shouldn't be a problem.

  • Based from my experience, I've been using Kaspersky for 4 years now, it really delivers! The worms/viruses/trojans that can't be eliminated by avast/avg/other free anti virus, kaspersky neutralizes them with ease.

  • I use AVG 7.5. I tried version 8.x but somehow I felt it hogs a lot of memory. The good old 7.5 is smooth.
  • Hi guys, I am a newbie forumer (is that a word?) but I have been doing PC support for 16 years so here is my 2 cents worth.

    In general most threats these days are not really viruses in the old sense of the word but more trojans, spyware, adware, keyloggers etc

    You definatly need a good firewall, I use the free version of ZoneAlarm & am quite happy with it.

    If you are running an older version of AVG (pre-8 I think) you will need additional protection, I have used spyware terminator in the past & it found problems Ad-Aware didn't have a clue about. AVG is free for the basic version & free for the upgrade if you sign up to one of those trials.

    AVG 8.x looks for other types of behaviour to earlier versions so you probably don't need the additional tool.

    I have also found a little freebie called Dog Patrol useful in the past as it monitors changes in the startup/background. Again I think the latest versions of anti-virus & anti-spyware programs will have this built in but earlier versions not.

    Norton is hopeless, especially their complete packages. I believe latter versions have improved but I wouldn't touch them with a long bargepole (+ they charge).

    Be careful which toolbars you install, often I see browsers full of toolbars. At the very least they slow everything down & quite often have adware,spyware abilities.

    If your machine is being overtly slow with these things running in the background you can buy a usb dongle with the security software installed on their instead, or run a seperate PC & use that as a gateway.

    Keep upto date with security updates, don't use bit-torrent sites, don't open suspicious emails, don't open suspecious attachments, use high encryption on your broadband connections (WEP passwords can be cracked in less time than it took to write this sentance for instance), use passwords that are a mixture of alpha,numeric & symbols to stop dictionary attacks....phew....and if all that fails get a slimmed down version of Linux (apples software is based on Unix).

    And for those who have got this far & still reading, heres my top tip. If you are inputting credit card info then use the virtual keypad in windows-accesories. A key logger can't read clicks.

    What I really like about Kaspersky is that it doesn't seem to use as much system resources as AVG.

    I've also heard good things about NOD32. It would be the next I would try...

    I use Avast, free version. Pretty good. I also use CCCleaner to flush out unwanted temp files and cookies. I use PCTools Spyware Doctor for taking out spyware.

    Malwarebytes seems to work the best for me,
    although Spyware Doctor is also decent and
    fast too.

    There were a lot of cases where AVG couldn't
    do the job while Malwarebytes was super
    effective.

  • I used to use CA Security Suite - it worked very well, used minimal resources and was fairly unobtrusive. When my subscription ran out, they jacked up the price. At the same time, AVG offered me a deal, so I took that. It seems to use more resources and can be obtrusive sometimes (like when it wants to scan every website every time I google - thankfully they got rid of that for V8). However, it has worked very well.

    I also use a hardware firewall, which works great. Using Firefox with smart plugins (like NoScript and AdBlockPlus) also seems to keep unwanted nasties out.

    I use the internet a LOT (way too much) and haven't had a problem in the last few years. I will say that the hardware firewall made the biggest difference. NoScript was also a huge help. I have tried other antivirus programs, and several online scanning tools, and none of them detected anything that either CA or AVG Pro didn't...

  • I use Avast, it is free for home users, and it is really good, I love the fact that it can scan before windows starts, so he outsmarts some of the intelligent viruses.

      AVG is also very good and its free
      Spybot / Spybot Search and Destroy is very good anti spyware and its free

      No need to pay for good anti virus software. In fact, my experience is the free are better.

  • I am using Kaspersky because I thought it would use less RAM. I have previously used Macaffee and Norton but was not happy with them.
  • I used to use Nod32, which I loved. Unfortunately after 3 years they began disallowing me to download renewals from their US site saying that I had to buy the Italian version (Brit living in Italy here), which was more or less double the US price. Probably a licensing issue but the end result was they lost a customer.

    I used Bitdefender for a couple of years which is another good security suite but took far too long to scan my drives.

    Now I'm using Avira Premium Security Suite and I'm very happy with it. It even blocks dodgy web sites and is scans much faster than Bitdefender.

    I've never used any of the free antivirus solutions as I believe "you get what you pay for" in this sector.

  • I have to cast my vote for AVG free version too.

    Plus just last night I installed another free tool. Spybot -Search and destroy.
    It's knocks out malware and spyware, and other ooky things that slow down your system.

    I highly suggest both.
  • Norton and McAffe.....and their ever present pop-ups, warnings, upgrades, sales pitches, etc clogged my computer for too long. I use spysweeper and another program in unison.

    • I use symantec antivirus 10.2 both for home and office use. It's pretty well. I set it to run scanning every Wednesday. So far so good.
  • Hi Bob I am also Using Kasperky 2009 and its very effective anti virus software , previously i was using "Avg" but it was not much good , then I used "Norton" but its also not good instead of blocking or deleting any virus its totally blocked my internet connection, then i Purchased "Avast" one of my friend suggested it but it in stead of disinfecting any virus or trojan it completely delete all my softwares from my system and its also not good then finally I have purchased Kasperky its very effective its also not make my internet connection slow while scanning anything and it also block many Trojans and It also delete the Saliti Trojans.So I Will Give 100 out of 100 points to it.

  • I swear by Avast. My other half ran some comprehensive tests a while back in order to write a review article for a tech mag. He tested all the major antivirus apps, and Avast was the only one that could deal with the nastiest of nasties.

    I use Avast in combination with Lavasoft Adaware and CCleaner.

    Twice it found bugs that other "Big Names" have missed.

    Dumped the "Big Names" and stuck with AVG.

  • Am currently using Spyware Terminator after AVG recently played havoc with my computer. This has also happened to many friends of mine. A pity, as I had previously used it for many years without a hitch. Also use use Spybot which, I find, is very effective.

    and which i use now is BitDefender. You can download the trail version for one month.
  • Even though you get McAdfee free with High Speed Internet. I find that it slows down my computer. Norton is another program that seems to slow computer speed. I love AVG in fact the Professor teaching Info Tech suggested that I take McAfee off and just use AVG.

  • I am using Avast and the Anti-virus module of ZoneAlarm Extreme although they dont like running simultaneously.

    ZoneAlarm Extreme is a firewall with other security modules like, email, browser and spyware.

  • I used to use Nortons but it seemed to be getting worse instead of better. I have switched to free AVG but I think I am still getting something going through. My computer does wacky things sometimes. May have to go to a purchased version.

    I use to use Norton and i had at least 1 virus a week getting thru and i had to reinstall windows, I went to the paid version of AVG, and never looked back, I will always stay with AVG.

  • I used Norton last year and hated it. was buggy and, frankly - didn't work. The geek squad guy at Best Buy told me to get Kaspersky so I did. It's actually much easier to use, doesnt eat up as much of your 'puter resources and doesn't pronounce everything I do to be "deadly".
  • I am using ESET anti-virus and keeps on updating it.. But some unwanted .exe files keeps showing up.. They get quarantined though but these files show up again once I restart my computer..

    • I'm happy with Bitdeffender. Doesn't seem to use much resources unless it's doing a full system scan. Integrates with Outlook for antiphishing - just updated to work with win7.

      May have to give AVG a try though...

  • I'm using Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntispyware, and SpybotSearch&Destroy.

    Next time I'm going with NOD.

    The reality is most antivirus programs are useless. They are retroactive. It's not the virus you know about but the one that is sitting there silently sending info that is the problem.

    Take it from someone who is still cleaning out hacked websites from an ftp trojan - the current list of FUD (fully undetectable) spyware sitting in cyberspace will blow your mind.

  • I've tried and tested most of them....but hands down Eset Smart Security (makers of Nod32) takes the cake....then Kapersksy

    McAfee - resource hog
    Norton - resource hog

    Eset has a light RAM footprint and higher detection rate as well as a lower false / positive rate.
  • I use and sell AVG Internet Security, I have used and sold Norton and McAfee until they both over did it and blotted them selves up. So far AVG hasn't done that.
  • I have NORTON ANTIVIRUS ....... to that i added AVG ......... BIG MISTAKE ........
    i stopped the quick response that i got when i clicked on any piece of email.

    I called norton support and they said to take off the AVG immediately ...... i did so
    than every thing got back to normal .......... both of them running together will
    slow down or stop all email. have only one running at a time.

  • Ran into something a month ago, over that time I have downloaded all the above on trials etc., also did spyware cease no answer form support, good job, viper, did not find crap. Norton, spyware terminater, micro trend, nod, karpasky, etc etc, all of them would stomp a cookie and call it clean........but I knew something was going on.......so remembered in many spyware definitions in searching for info came up from CA internet security. If you actually believe your good and secure with that free crap that says its all good.........look up their free scan..............

  • Few years back, I was a great fan of BitDefender Internet Security but later on I got uncomfortable with it. it got too complex to set up for average users.

    Lastly I tried ESET Smart Security and never got back to other AntiVirus. I'm comfortable with it. It consumes less System Memory than other similar programs. Scanning time is also very fast.

      Say what you want about the older versions...They were indeed resource hogs..BUT..

      I believe the 2010 version of Norton Internet Security is one of your very best choices. I have years of experience with computers, and have tried AVG, Bitdefender, Avast, and several others.

      What is so good about the 2010 NIS is:

      *Most all of the reviews say NIS does a great job overall, not just on virus, but adware, ect.

      *It is much lighter on resources than their old versions..

      *The presets to start scanning automatically when your computer isn't being used, and update itself many times per day without you even noticing is VERY helpful.

      *Our experience is that this actually catches FAR more virus and malware attempts BEFORE any infection occurs.

      Try it and I believe you will find it to be very effective...and worth the cost..

      Yes, it's true and Windows machine are vulnerable to virus kinds of things whereas Linux-based machine & MAC are the safest bet.
  • Not getting into the whole this one is better deal, but I use ESET Smart Security 4 and I love it! I've had Panda, AVG, and some others and this is by far the best (that I have found)...It's already stopped me from getting some bad stuff!
  • Right now I'm using Webroot (paid version). I'm really impressed with it. It found a trojan, that AVG didn't catch. Which I just stopped using. I quit using Norton years ago. I've used a lot of different anti-virus programs in the past.

  • ESET Nod32 antivirus is highly recommended or bitdefender
  • I use a combination of AVG 9, SpyBot SD and MalwareBytes. Has worked very well for me. On problems whatsoever in the last 3 years on XP.
  • I use Kaspersky Internet Security. It's very good.

    Ive tried many . Yes Kaspersky is good ( But as you tell it has many holes in it ) . Now Am useing Norton . Yes it has its own cons ( makes the system slow , Often dosent allow us to install some essential software etc. ) . But in case of security - its actually doing a very good job ! I just need to tweek it now and then to adjust my stuff to get inside .
