Best Hostgator Alternatives?

Which are the best alternatives?

My budget is same as it was with hostgator - $9.95 per month.

I got some responses on webhostingtalk.com from which i learnt that crocweb is a good alternative.

Any other?

Or should i just stick with hostgator?

Thanks,
ASHISH

Hostgator seems to be getting worse after the EIG take over, if their struggles with changing the datacenter is an indication. The support is not as good as it used to be. I hav heard a lot of good reviews about crocweb, that should be a better option.

Mdd or stable host. You can get a year for about $40ish with coupons from webhostingtalk. Mdd has been great for me so far.

MDD and Stable were good suggestions.

Lunarpages was quite bad several years ago, and never really recovered. They left the consumer shared market. They still offer it, yes, but you have to dig around for it on their site. I tried to use them in 2006, and they were totally incompetent. I was told lots of wrong info that first week, by various techs, and ended up leaving soon thereafter for a better host. Other feedback over the year has more or less repeated this pattern.

Reliabox has several bad WHT and WOT reviews. Better read those first.

Bluehost = Hostgator = one of the 50+ EIG brands = avoid them all!

LiquidWeb VPS are excellent, if you need a VPS. (Most users don not.)

Webhost.us.com = Webhost.uk.com, and the reviews are mixed. Do your research.

Read some of my other posts here at WF to see my various hosting suggestions for shared hosting (web hosting), reseller, VPS, and dedicated. Done it many times, no need to keep repeating myself.

Chose your new host wisely! Good luck.

Yes, I can no longer recommend Reliabox as I did for nearly a year. It changed ownership at some point, which I wasn't aware of, and the bad management reared its ugly head recently when
1) I was threatened with suspension due to non-payment, even though I had in fact paid on time as usual. They didn't have it in their records, but I was able to provide proof. They then entered the transaction into their database, but also slapped a late payment fee on me. I did get them to credit me for it, but still...

2) Within a couple days of the billing issue, my site was absolutely nowhere to be found, as if it never existed; I couldn't even FTP to the server. When I submitted a ticket they said it was fine, and of course suddenly the site was back up. And about two weeks later it was down again.
I canceled my account (which included an affiliate site to promote their services!) and do not recommend them at this time.

I do have other sites on WebFaction, and haven't had any problems in the 8 months I've been with them.

That's where I saw it the other day -- it was bought by Root Level Technologies. They bought Urpad, VMPort, Semoweb, K-Disk, and some others. Believe it or not, those were already crappy hosts, but RLT succeeded in mailing them worse! Unbelievably awful now.

@others...

Digital Ocean is getting bad reviews suddenly. The CPU load is not very good. Watch out. It's being heavily abuse by bitcoin/litecoin mining, accord to industry scuttlebutt.

myHosting has mixed reviews, mostly negatives. I've experienced some of that in the past year. In terms of hosts, I think this one is on EIG's radar; I wrote about this a while back, on my site. I'd avoid them.

ZPanel is NOT safe. Avoid it! The devs are stubborn. cPanel is better for pay, and Virtualmin GPL and ISPConfig 3 are better for free panels. Note that cPanel is best for security. Lots of SSH time is required to secure the freebies. zPanel cannot be secured because it's exploited, and unfixed after many months.

eUKHost isn't bad. Not great, but not bad.

I've had bad luck with most shared hosting companies (I used Bluehost - horrible -, Lunar Pages - equally bad, GreenGeeks, lots of problems...) so I have been using PVS for the past year. I am with MyHosting.com. Overall they are good, they customer service is also good, I just find they platform a bit average... lots of steps before you can access your Plesk panel etc.

How's DigitalOcean? (The prices are the same as MyHosting.com).
Cheers
Digital Ocean is one of the best host in my experience. I've been using them for quite sometime now. They allow you to start up instances known as droplets. I also use Amazon AWS EC2 instances but prefer Digital Ocean.

Digital Ocean also just received another few million in funding: Digital Ocean raises $3.2M, stakes its claim on developer-friendly cloud hosting | PandoDaily

The support is fanatical and the community behind it is amazing. You're just going to have to sign up for an account and get going.

Remember to ask support for a $10 coupon. Depending on the droplet you use, that's about two months free for one droplet. I think one is: SSDTWTTR

You can find bad reviews about anything online. The best way to find out is to try it yourself. If you haven't tried it, I wouldn't discount it. I haven't had any problems with my droplets and I've been using them for quite some time. Just learn to manage it correctly.

As for Zpanel, true. There are plenty alternatives. You don't even need an all in one system like cpanel or zpanel. You could just manage everything yourself.

Digital Ocean gives you the ability to start up a droplet with Wordpress installed automatically.

Give it a shot.

True however, the point being made here from us in this industry is that it's extremely unsecured. It's been exploited many times & continues to be.

I agree. Those other hosts, with ads all over the internet, are "so popular" because of their aff commissions and all the websites set up to earn those commissions.

I use stablehost, and yes, webhosting talk is the BEST place to look for unbiased info. Crocweb has some recommendations, but unless you just really like reptile mascots, there are other great hosts like MDD, StableHost, and others that you can find there.

And, no, I would advise you against staying with Hostgator or going with other EIG hosts.

Hmm.. hostgator has been very good for me till date,

My sites are 99.99% uptime or rather i don't see any error.
If you get Reseller / Baby / Hatchling, shouldnt experiences anything..

But I know that if you get Hostgator's VPN Server, then yes, it's Hell loads of problems..

Checkout Lunar Pages.

You may have to increase your budget a little. I am using 2 virtual dedicated servers from them for more than 1 years. I have seen them really cooperative. Not like Godaddy or Hostgator. I used (via my clients) hostgator and Godaddy in past and now moved to other hosts.

I just moved all my smaller sites on Hostgator over to Stablehost, based on some recommendations I've read here.

Migration took just a couple of hours.

Only thing I'm gonna miss from Hostgator are the Google Adwords coupons they send me from time to time.

For those who aren't familiar with some of these companies, kpmedia has written a great in depth article comprised of information over the years: HostGator Alternatives, Part 1: Who is EIG? – The Digital FAQ – Media Guides & Services

I encourage everyone reading this thread to review it thoroughly and understand what the article is about & who Endurance International Group actually is. He's been reviewing the web hosting industry I've known since the early 2000's that I'm aware of & has seen plenty of companies come & go & also get destroyed. There's a lot of horror stories of EIG acquisitions & some companies that most of you have never even heard of.

99.9% of the customers who all of the sudden start having problems, chances are, your "new" host is the problem. 90% of the customers were either lied to about this migration (so called "upgrade") or simply fed some other BS; network issues, hdd failures, RAID array failures, websites go down for a few hours, suddenly come back up & customers are told Wordpress/Joomla plugins are the culprit...come on.

Yeh last pages don't look so good. But for someone like me with a few small sites they have been excellent!! Thats my opinion anyway :p

I am so fed up with Hostgator. I've been using them for years, but the last couple of years it has been driving me crazy. I just got my THIRD "sudden migration" notice "because of hardware upgrades" and every time this happens there are always problems and my own clients always get upset at me. The frustrating thing this is the 2nd time for this to happen now in just a couple of months. I don't want to go through this again.

Last time I thought it would help spread out resources (reaching too stringent POP3 limits) and avoid these migrations if I switched to their reseller plan. So I'm paying $24.95/month.

I'm not looking for a bottom-of-barrel price savings. I'm just looking for decent, reliable hosting of a couple of dozen domains, and reliable email hosting for a few of those domains and reliable ordinary web hosting or WordPress hosting in the others. My bandwidth needs are low. My hard disk needs are low. I just need reliability and Hostgator is turning into an absolute nightmare.

I don't want to go through one of these migrations again. And if I have to, I'd rather just switch to another service altogether.

I'm looking for good suggestions here. I need good 24/7 tech support if there are problems. I don't want to run my own cPanel on my own VPS necessarily. Not without support. I also use Linode for a bunch of VPS instances - but that is for an entirely different purpose running custom server software. I don't use or need cPanel on the Linodes.

My Hostgator needs are for the supposedly simple stuff. Clients who need plain web pages, WordPress and email.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

Thanks!

doug
Can you give some additional details on the sites? What is the total number of sites you currently have as well as the resources you're using? (how much storage space)

I have 28 sites/domains. In total they use less than 20 GB of space. 2 sites have about 50 email addresses each. The rest have 0, 1, 2 or 3 email addresses. About 4 sites are using WordPress. The rest have their own designed home pages. Bandwidth is fairly negligible.

Read your two posts.

Yep, that's pathetic, if all you have is 4 WP sites, and 24 HTML sites (non-CMS, non-WP). Alas, that's expected from Hostgator and other EIG brands.

I'd usually suggest several hosts for this, but since Kingfish85 is here, just use Veerotech. It's a great host, use it myself (one of many), and it has none of the BS like you experience at the cheapy hosts.

If you need/want a lower-cost plan, then look at Stablehost, Site5 or Stream101 (my three S's!). Those are great hosts too. But Veerotech is my suggestion for you.

Your needs are nothing unusual. Switch hosts, and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the mention here KP.

@douglerner - that's not a lot of sites or a ton of storage space being used. As for bandwidth, it's not really a major factor anymore since bandwidth is getting cheaper by the day.

I think the most important aspect of what you describe, is the number of email addresses - what are these emails used for? Are they just general email accounts or are they business critical email accounts?

Since DNS can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate when changing, we always make sure to adjust the TTL's a day or so before the planned move to help speed things up. This would especially help with mail flow as well.

Aside from that, as KPmedia mentioned, your needs are fairly basic.

Yes, those email accounts are business critical. It's really just two of my clients with that number of email accounts. That's just been because they have been with me for years. My own personal email is an old grandfathered in Google Docs account with a 50-limit email address private domain. But the 2 customers with about 50 email addresses each have been using them for years at Hostgator, and mostly use POP3 and have also been hitting the 30 POPs per hour from a single IP limit as well. The whole idea of there being "unlimited email addresses" is practically fraudulent.

I have to thank you for the Site5 suggestion. Those guys rock ! I am sick and tired about hostgator services. My website is shut down for almost 24 hours because I "overused CPU". Suport ticket - still not answered. The live chat support - just like you are speaking to robots. I'm so done with hostgator !

Migrating my website as we speak. And i have to tell you, I had a blast chatting with the guys at site5 ( actually it was first a guy, than a girl ). Awesome support, awesome services , the prices and what they offer seems even better, they have a 30 day free now. It's fantastic !

Just so you know, they were recently bought out buy the same company that HostGator was bought out by. Typically, there's only one way that goes..

Sad to tell you that Site5 is recently bought by EIG, we expect Site5 will just become Hostgator with another brand name, you better move to another one before its quality goes down, make sure you check if the hosting company is owned by eig before you buy host plan.

Sad to see A Small Orange on that list. They were supposed to keep it "small" and personalized. I was even looking to host with them for a little while then the EIG buyouts started happening.

I think as long as hosts like WiredTree stay away from EIG things should be fine.

Yeah, I agree that kinda sucks. I also looked at A Small Orange, and almost went with them until I found out they had also been bought by EIG. Too bad because I like what I saw, but just couldn't bear taking a chance with another EIG owned property.

I'm curious about one thing for starters at the Veerotech home page. I'm not looking to beat Hostgator's price. I'm more interested in some stability. But at the site it says:
• Reseller Hosting
• Starting at $9.99/mo
Yet if you click on the reseller hosting link the lowest cost plan is actually $26.99. So I wonder what that's about.

Also, it's not clear from the site what kind of support there is (just email? also live chat? 24/7?) and what the general limits are (are there POP3 checks-per-hour limits, etc?)

Thanks,

Hi there,

Our site was recently redesigned & glad you pointed that out as it slipped by. It has been corrected now.

• Reseller Hosting
• Starting at $9.99/mo
-----

Also, it's not clear from the site what kind of support there is (just email? also live chat? 24/7?) and what the general limits are (are there POP3 checks-per-hour limits, etc?)
We provide support via our support desk (ticketing system). "I" can arrange phone conversations however, we do not provide public phone support at this time. It's easier for myself & my techs to work out issues through our ticketing system - it also creates documentation & history on said account.

As for Pop3 connections, I will have to double check that for you.

If you have any other questions, please do let me know.

Thanks,
Brent

I see. Thanks. A limit of 10 POP3 checks per hour from one IP address might be problematic for an office with 50 users. Interestingly their entire current disk usage is less than 1 GB, including their web site and all their email together. But they have been running into the Hostgator 30 POP3 checks per hour limit lately and have been complaining that "they can't check email."

I mean what can I tell them? Yes, don't check ever minute, or every 5 minutes. That's fine. but I can hardly say, "Stagger your email checking schedule and be sure that no more than 10 people check their email each hour. How you schedule that is up to you." It's a complicated issue. I know they are not "swamping the server" with requests. The total bandwidth for all the sites together is trivial and everything is low traffic. But I would like the email at least to run smoothly for them.

I see - we're flexible on settings like these however, allowing too many connections can cause stability problems, especially on shared/reseller environments. If the limit was say, 50, it would be the same for every user which opens doors to other security issues.

It's not so much an issue for 1 account however, if you multiply that by multiple accounts per server - it can certainly cause some performance issues.

Now, on the other hand, could you tell me more of what your budget is for this?

I'm starting to fall asleep (I live in Tokyo) so will probably need to go into more detail tomorrow. But basically my budget for the kind of replacement-for-Hostgator services I was imaging are in the range of your VR100 to VR300 service range. The reseller just means there are separate cPanels, right?

The only reason I recently switched from Hostgator shared "business" to a reseller account was to have more resources per cPanel, thinking things would run better.

Things haven't run too badly, but the migration was difficult. And just before that they had one of their spontaneous migrations which was also difficult, and my clients got sort of upset at me, and claimed emails were missing, etc.

Now it looks like they are going to do this yet again over the next 2 weeks and I really don't want to upset my own clients any more. For the life of me I can't imagine why they have to up and change their IP addresses and name servers. I also use Linode, and occasionally hardware is upgraded and host machines need to be moved, but I've never had IP address changes occur. Everything was very seamless with minimal downtime.

But as I said, I use Linode for other purposes. Special server software my company makes. I don't run cPanel there or do the kinds of things I do at Hostgator at Linode.

So ... anyway, I think I'm going to take a diazepam and go to sleep for now.

Thanks,

Hi there Doug,

The reseller accounts would be identical to what you have now - separate cPanel accounts for each domain. Now, that said, separate cPanel accounts doesn't solve the mail connection per IP limit, especially if your business users are behind NAT (IE using 1 single external IP).

What I'd propose is one of our managed VPS's - our VPS - 100 includes all of the same features "except" for LiteSpeed, CloudLinux & outgoing SpamExperts filtering (we can arrange this at an extra cost - I'll need to double check it though but it's not too expensive. It's managed, we secure it, maintain it, back it up etc - and provide you with a reseller style access. You have root access available upon request, but by default we provide a reseller account to you on the VPS to lower the chance of any issues with root access. This would be a few bucks more per month than the VR300 however, the server can be 100% customized to meet your needs - IE 5 pop connections, or 500 pop connections, backup schedule can be changed etc etc.

Aside from that, you mention IP address changes - this is because you're most likely being moved from Softlayer in Texas to EIG's datacenter in Utah.

-Brent

I just wanted to mention that I ended up settling in with Veerotech (VeeroTech Systems, LLC - Web Hosting Solutions) and have been very pleased.

I am a refugee from Hostgator, who after years with them got fed up by their ceaseless, sudden "migrations" which caused havoc and, most recently, during massive chaos, lost me a long-term, large customer whose fees covered my entire Hostgator annual reseller costs.

I tried one other service first (A2) because, to be honest, I was a bit worried about the staff size of Veerotech. But A2 had extremely slow support - I couldn't even get anything migrated from Hostgator after 5 days. So I quit that service.

Meanwhile, Veerotech's owner (Kingfish85 in these forums) kept politely and helpfully answering all my questions, here and by private email. So despite some initial reservations about size and the ability to provide good support (especially 24/7 support - since I live overseas) I decided to open a reseller contract and migrate over my cPanels from Hostgator and see how it went.

It went just fine.

Naturally when changing companies there are always some things you are used to which are done differently at the new company. And there were a few minor things which needed to be adjusted. But Brent and his team were there for me every step of the way.

Their help with migration could not have been better. Their obviously strong desire to make sure everything is working well for me makes me feel very much at home with Veerotech.

I currently have 23 cPanels in my reseller account, and just need to move over 2 more from Hostgator after coordinating with my clients.

If you are anxious to get away from Hostgator and are looking for a safe harbor to migrate to, I would recommend Veerotech.

To be completely objective, I would not say their support is truly "24/7" for the kinds of support tickets I opened. After all, the company is small, and people need to sleep. On the other hand, I didn't mark any of my tickets as "high priority" (because nothing was really going that wrong - just a few initial quirks to square away). I assume if there was truly something horrible happening somebody would be there. But there were no serious problems. And everything is working smoothly and quickly.

By contrast, my final few weeks with Hostgator were a complete nightmare. Even with their 24/7 support I couldn't get answers for days at a time. And Hostgator's "Live chat" would end up hanging after waiting for almost an hour at a time.

That doesn't happen with Veerotech. If you need something, you will get a response within a reasonable amount of time. I've definitely never had to wait more than half a day. And if I make a request during their normal business hours, their responsiveness is even faster. Almost like they are just sitting there waiting for me to contact them.

Their technical skill levels are definitely excellent.

Sometimes a smaller organization is better. I have to say after being with them for a month now I feel very much at home, and in good hands, with Veerotech and would recommend them to anybody. Again, their link is VeeroTech Systems, LLC - Web Hosting Solutions. And I have not signed up with their affiliate program. I'm just satisfied and happy to say so.

Well, it's a complete train wreck at Hostgator today. They did yet another "migration" and now all my cPanels, add-on domain emails, static home pages and wordpress blogs are broken and all my customers are yelling at me at 2:30 am here in Tokyo. Hostgator is giving nothing but vague replies about "emergency maintenance." After they get this up I am desperate to find another solution.

I never did hear back from KingFish about his service.

Any recommendations for good alternative to Hostgator would be greatly appreciated. After these sites become accessible again I would like to begin the process of migrating elsewhere.

The actual data, etc., isn't that large. Less than 20 GB of space used among all 30 or so domains. 2 domains have about 50 email accounts each though. But resources used are very small.

But Hostgator just isn't reliable anymore.

Sigh,

Brent,

Sorry. I was sort of left with the impression that you might contact me and I left my address above - doug(at)elliptics.com. But I see it was sort of left in a vague state.

If you would contact me I would appreciate it.

It's about 3:00 am here now, and Hostgator has been down almost all day JST, and I don't know when they are coming up. A migration isn't possible until they come up again obviously, so if you do email me I won't be able to respond until the morning my time when I get up again.

Thanks,

Hi Doug,

I may be mistaken but I thought we spoke via email. I will search through my emails and then shoot you an email here shortly. Were there any specific questions you had that perhaps someone here on the forum could benefit from public answers as well?

I may be mistaken too. After the upgrade to Mavericks on my Mac some mail has gotten confused. I just did a search but don't see anything, and don't recall anything. But all our communications so far have been in the middle of the night my time, and my brain is not at its peak at this time of the night.

Mine are slowly coming up again. Mail seems to be working. WordPress sites are still on-again / off-again. No response to my support ticket. One warning mail to me that I need to make a private nameserver IP change I made over a week ago and afterwards confirmed with Hostgator and confirmed again is already set correctly.

It's very bad over at Hostgator right now. Very bad.

I do have lots of questions though of course. The sorts of things anybody might ask, such as:

- How long have you been in business?

- How large a staff do you have (or are you basically a one-person operation)? (Note: We are a small company too, so that fact you may not be large is not necessarily a bad point. But it would be nice to have a general idea.)

- The support-ticket-based system is fine, but is it monitored 24/7 and how quick are responses?

- How much will it actually cost?

- How is the migration process handled to be the least disruptive? Particularly for people's email settings.

- Do you handle all the needed migrations?

- Where is your data center? Is it possible to test an upload and download connection?

Those are a few things off the top of my head.

Thanks much,

Doug

Hi there,

I have been in the IT & hosting industry for 10-12+ years - worked with various technologies from Linux servers, Cisco gear (networking), Windows servers, Active Directory, VMware, NetApp, disaster recovery etc. My company, while small, has 3 technicians including myself. Our support desk is also monitored 24/7 and also by techs who have been in the industry as well - you will not get "canned" replies; we know what we're doing.

Regarding migrations, we can handle everything from start to finish - it's actually easier for "us" to handle the migration as we do it on a daily basis. That way, we're not stepping over each other moving files & data. The process is fairly simple, you'd just submit a request, fill out the requested info & then we'll schedule a start time. Generally, we complete migrations within 24-48 hours of submitting the request.

We have 3 locations: Dallas, TX - Lenoir, NC & Chicago, IL. I can provide you additional details & test IP's privately for this.

Any other questions, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Brent

That A2 Hosting always looks interesting. They seem to be independent of EIG as well. The A2 apparently stands for Ann Arbor (where I went to grad school).

Anyway, much to think about. I will think everything over. And thank you too Kingfish.

I have been using inmotion hosting for the past year and a half, they have been great and their support is spot on, they have all the packages a marketer needs, vps, reseller, dedicated servers etc.
Tip, also use Cloudflare (free option), then when your server goes down, Cloudflare will still show a copy of your website to visitors, instead of the sites just disappearing.
Cheers

Not likely. For every 1 customer that leaves, an affiliate looking to make $50 a pop is sending them more and most are unsuspecting of what's going on..

I already offered StableHost. But if you want more options: A2, MMD, VeeroTech all look good.

The migration accident is why I left HG to begin with. Except it was my own site--not clients' sites. Moving from a host is one of those things that nobody really wants to do. That's one reason why crummy hosts still have lost of customers.

It's like when companies sign you up for a trial offer that will become a paid monthly subscription if you don't cancel. A lot of people just don't get around to cancelling.

Moving hosts is a bit harder than calling to cancel a subscription. But it's a lot more beneficial in the long run too. If you stay at HG, and it happens twice, then it's your fault. Make a switch, and you'll be glad when it's over. And though it might seem like one more thing to do, it's worth it for better service, perhaps faster speeds, and peace of mind.

I'm really upset because due to the migration chaos at Hostgator my biggest Hostgator client informed me yesterday he was leaving me and finding another place for their services. That one account was more than enough to pay for my Hostgator fees for a year. And they've been with me for 8 years! But there have been 3 incidents like this over the last 6 months, and this past weekend was such a disaster they finally got fed up and we are parting ways. Sigh.

Ironically, Hostgator is working quite well this morning, and SQL accesses are back up to speed.

But I can't trust them any more so I am migrating away. With what customers I have left after the debacle.

I agree with the comments above about why Hostgator doesn't fail and disappear. There are so many affiliate promos out there. In fact, I've gotten promo money myself from them, which I feel guilty about now. Though for the people who used my promo link, they are super simple, one person, tiny home pages with email, and they never have anything complicated and never use outside domain registrars, etc. They probably don't even notice that anything happened.

It's just for people who need a tad more complication, like working with multiple cPanels, and providing extra value-added services for their clients who get hurt by Hostgator's shenanigans.

Their support responses to me about my last issues were just completely infuriating, missing the point entirely.

You have to admit that they are unfailingly polite and pleasant though. It reminds me of a phrase I read in a novel once: "sweet bovine unreason."

It would be wise to bite the bullet and get a migration set up with a new host before you end up losing more customers. If not, I'd start monitoring all of your sites on 1-5 minute intervals.

My short experience with A2 Hosting - and why I just canceled my account.

After reading about A2 Hosting in this thread, it seemed quite interesting. SSD hosting, slightly higher pricing but more disk space and bandwidth for the money than Hostgator. It is located in Ann Arbor where I went to grad school, so I felt a sort of connection. They promise 24/7 Live Chat and phone support in addition to support tickets. The infrastructure they promote looks really nice, and they told me they have a staff of 40 and are hiring, which seems to indicated stability, sufficient staff for support and growth. And of course they are independent of EIG. Also they have no POP3 checks per hour limits, which had proven to be a problem with one customer at Hostgator, and was a concern to me.

Also I was (and still am) anxious to get away from Hostgator because this past week, after all the disasters, and after repeated problems there over the last few months, I just don't trust Hostgator anymore.

Because of Hostgator this past week, I lost a customer who paid $800/year for minimal services and who had been with me 8 years (they just didn't want to deal with web services and setting up email accounts themselves - an ideal customer). They were a low-resource, low-maintenance customer whose fees more than covered my Hostgator fees. And now because of Hostgator I've lost them.

So I definitely want to change.

Side-note: Since yesterday, Hostgator has been responding very speedily again and the problems seem resolved - for now. And I received an apology letter and a month's billing credit, which I did not request. But this is not a one-time incident, and I've lost my faith in them, so I want to move on. I can't deal with Hostgator's sudden, mysterious, repeated, short-notice migrations which never go smoothly.

But I'm not in a "crisis mode" like I was on Monday when everything was falling apart. So I want to take my time and make sure I choose a better place this time.

Anyway, back to why A2 Hosting did now work out.

A2 Hosting seemed great on paper, and at least one person here wrote positively about them, and they have what looks like great, independent reviews, and have a lot of info about their data center and so on. So on Monday I signed up for the SSD reseller hosting plan.

But I am not satisfied at all with the support and progress.

It's now the 4th day since signing up and nothing has happened yet. There is no indication that a backup was made of my cPanel at Hostgator, and no change to my WHM at A2. All I asked was that ONE cPanel be migrated from Hostgator initially so I could test before proceeding with the rest of them.

1. The first day was spent dealing with billing because my signup was "flagged" because I am in Japan and my credit card address is in the U.S., and their billing office is not 24/7. Even though I was told by Live Chat support that the billing person gets in at 6:00 am ET they still were not there by 10:00 am when I went to sleep (midnight here).

2. The 2nd day the account was finally created and I put in a migration request for one of my cPanels at Hostgator so I could give them a trial run. I didn't hear back from them that day, even though I sent a followup question asking "how is it going?" It certainly didn't seem like 24/7 support.

3. Yesterday, the 3rd day I finally heard back that I needed to increase the disk quota for the cPanel at Hostgator so it's at least twice the size of the used area so they could create the full cPanel backup. And they asked me when I wanted it scheduled, even though I originally said "immediately." They also didn't answer 5 simple questions I asked in my support ticket until I reminded them again. Anyway, I increased the quota as requested, wrote back to let them know and I've been waiting ever since. That was 24 hours ago.

4. It is now day four.

Also, their 24/7 Live Chat appears to often be offline.

Then there was a problem with the support ticketing system initially not showing any of my support tickets and giving errors.

The "image" A2 Hosting promotes seems really nice. And I was excited about trying their SSD drives. And I felt a connection since I went to grad school in Ann Arbor. And they definitely are very friendly when I do reach somebody in Live Chat. But that image that doesn't live up to reality. At least in my case.

There is a 30-day money back guarantee. So I have requested that my account be canceled. I will move on and try to find somebody else. As mentioned above, since Hostgator is stable (for the moment) I don't feel rushed at this point and want to do it right.

HG's "free" month will hardly cover your loss. Sorry A2 didnt work for you. There are still lots of options left.

If you didnt do it already, check out webhostingforum and look for reviews on every company you find.

Hi James.

Actually, I am in discussions right now with Brent from VeeroTech (VeeroTech Systems, LLCVeeroTech Systems, LLC - Web Hosting Solutions). He has been very supportive in these forums since I started posting, and has also been very responsive to private emails.

His company is very small, which was somewhat of a concern. But at this point I think small, and the ability to make personal contact, might be just what we need. So I am leaning towards VeeroTech right now.

Anyway, I'm still putting out fires this morning and will post again soon.

Thanks,

I glanced at that site out of curiosity. I was rather put off from the outset because the site is poorly edited and clearly not written by a native English speaker. And it seemed to open slowly. It just doesn't present a professional appearance, so it raises suspicions in my mind. Plus the ultra-cheapie prices promoted are unrealistic. I'm not looking for rock-bottom, ultra-cheap at this point. I'm looking for reasonable prices for reasonable resources and performance, and stability.

Thanks,

Hi Kingfish,

I had some addition specific questions about VeeroTech that I thought others might find useful for reference as well, so I thought I would post to the forums.

1. For my custom name servers at Hostgator I am using private name server names: ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. To make this work I created two new host names at my registrar (a GoDaddy Reseller account I own) and set the IP addresses to the IP addresses for my reseller account's name servers. This "glues" the name servers. You mentioned something about clustered name servers and not using just 2 IP addresses for this. In this case, how would the private name servers be set up?

2. For domains with email accounts, would mail.thedomain.com be used for the incoming and outgoing mail server names regardless of whether the mail client is using SSL or not? I wanted to confirm this because at Hostgator, you can only use mail.thedomain.com for non-SSL, but for SSL you need to use a special name, such as "peranza.websitewelcome.com" or whatever the secure name is they assign to your account.

3. What would the format of the webmail URL look like?

4. You have a 60 POP3 check limit per hour per cPanel per incoming IP address, right? I guess I'm a bit concerned about what happens at an office where, say, 25 people have email. Even if their email traffic is not heavy, I can see them quickly not being able to check their email because of this limit. By comparion Hostgator's limit is just 30, which is even worse. A2 Host had no limit, but as I mentioned in my other email I canceled that account.

5. Is Fantastico used in your cPanel?

6. Do you have a screenshot or something of the cPanel and what services are available?

7. Why is LightSpeed better than Apache, and are there any incompatibility issues?

8. I don't see a support link at your site, or knowledge base, or support forums. Do you have a support forums? If not, you should talk to me. Is there a knowledge base and things like that? Perhaps they are only visible after logging in?

Thanks,

We have been used to SpamAssassin in the cPanel at Hostgator, which is free for all the domains. In addition to SpamExperts, which is not free for multiple domains, and with which I am not familiar, do you also provide SpamAssassin in your cPanels?

This would be for a reseller. I would have about 28 cPanels and maybe 50 domains in all, though only a few of the domains actually use email services.

Thanks,

Hi Doug,

We do provide SpamAssassin however, SpamExperts blows this out of the water. (we can do bulk discounts for multiple domains, we're flexible.)

Yes, resellers can utilize our IP's for our clustered DNS - we have multiple servers located in different geographic locations. This not only speeds up the time for DNS queries, it also removes the single point of failure for our DNS system. Using a cluster also virtual removes the need to change nameservers if we needed to move your accounts from one of our servers to another.

2. For domains with email accounts, would mail.thedomain.com be used for the incoming and outgoing mail server names regardless of whether the mail client is using SSL or not? Yes, DNS entries are created for mail.domain.com and mail clients can connect to mail.domain.com for each account. For SSL, you would need to connect to the mail.ourservername.com to use an SSL IF the account in question does not have an SSL cert.

3. What would the format of the webmail URL look like?
domain.com/webmail for each cpanel account or specify the port in place of "/webmail"

4. You have a 60 POP3 check limit per hour per cPanel per incoming IP address, right? I guess I'm a bit concerned about what happens at an office where, say, 25 people have email. There shouldn't be a problem with this however, if there's a user refreshing their mail continuously, it could cause problems. Our firewall ratelimits connections, but as discussed via email, we can make adjustments for you.

5. Is Fantastico used in your cPanel?
We utilize Softaculous, which is similar and better supported.

6. Do you have a screenshot or something of the cPanel and what services are available?
Our cPanel & WHM interfaces are the same as located here: https://cpanel.net/demo/

We do not brand them or load them up with ads or other junk.

7. Why is LightSpeed better than Apache, and are there any incompatibility issues?
LiteSpeed is a commercial grade web server that replaces Apache. It utilizes less resources, serves content faster and has a lot more security features. With commercial support, if there's a problem, we do not need to reply on random forum posts and "hack" fixes to get the problem solved. When we replaced Apache with LiteSpeed on our shared/reseller servers, the loads & RAM usage decreased anywhere from 10-20%. Those also decrease with every version release we've noticed as well.

8. I don't see a support link at your site, or knowledge base, or support forums. Do you have a support forums? If not, you should talk to me. Is there a knowledge base and things like that? Perhaps they are only visible after logging in?
We do, we've partnered with Digital FAQ for our guides & tutorials: Web Hosting Tutorials Forum – The Digital FAQ – Help for Video, Photo and Web Media

We do also have an internal KB that's being redesigned and will have mostly VeeroTech specific guides - we did have our own forum however, having an empty forum isn't all that good. We spent more time cleaning out spammers than anything else. Along with DigitalFAQ, we have some great resources coming down the line.

Hopefully that's answered most of your questions, and if any more, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,

Hi Doug,

Yes, we have an integrated billing and support system. There's a login link on our site in the navigation; perhaps we need better placement on that and I'm making note of it as well.

All hosting related issues are dealt through tickets that way there's an account history. There's a link titled "Login" that directs to our account management portal. This info is also mailed to all customers when purchasing as well.

That sounds good.

By the by, for some people who are put off by lack of chat/phone support, I want to mention that my favorite vendor - Linode - where I do my main business (the stuff I do at Hostgator is a very tiny part of what we do) also works only via support ticket. They have no phone or live chat support. Yet I am constantly praising the incredibly good support provided by Linode.

I could just use a Linode and get a cPanel license myself and add an extra Linode, but I am not experienced with the process and would really like to have somebody to contact for support if I run into trouble. Plus I assume various pieces need to be regularly updated for security and other purposes and I don't have time to deal with that properly.

In other words, I have no desire to be a competitor to the kinds of things VeeroTech is doing.

Thanks,

I recently signed up with Digital Ocean and it's been going pretty well. It's not too complicated to set up if you plan on using just one website. I imagine installing cPanel on it would be a bit difficult but they do have a one click WordPress installer. So if you use one plan per site it works out great.

For the past year I've been using a VPS 2048 from Beyond Hosting with a few upgrades. While I like this service it seems to be a bit much for what I really need. I'll be getting rid of CPV lab since my promotion methods are focusing more around sites like facebook instead of paid search. Not to mention their support is frustrating.

Support at Digital Ocean has been great on the few occasions I've had to contact them.

Overall I say keep it simple and why not try the cloud?

If I'm not mistaken, DigitalOcean uses "local" storage...which is not cloud - even though it says cloud, that term is thrown around a lot...

EDIT: Example, being able to adjust your resources is not cloud.

Using a high availability SAN (enterprise grade one at that) and clustered host nodes with failover & the ability to bring the VM's up in another location fairly quickly is more so a cloud.

EDIT again: nothing against them, I have a small vm for testing and it works pretty good for what's needed.

Digital Ocean provides a scalable VPS (scalable up to one physical server and not above?). It is not a cloud product.

In most cases, money ==> quality. But not always. We are in Web-Business since 13 years (though new in this forum) and from our experience I have seen, sometimes higher priced companies provide bad services, there are always limitations, either on server quality or service, in low priced hosting services.
That reminds me a story about a guy who tried to sell ties. He had average quality ties and tried to sell them for a good price. But without success. Then he decided to increase the price. But not only for 10% or 20%, he multiplied the price and sold them for the same price as luxury ties are sold. And people started to buy them...

What does it mean for you? If you are the vendor, it may be an inspiration for you how to be more successful. But if you are the customer, make sure that the higher priced products or services are really worth the price.

How about Dreamhost? I've been pretty happy with their services and they have still improved a lot from what they were a year or two ago. Support works now fast and nicely (chat & twitter). And I've got lots of tips from them for example how to make my pages loading faster.

No too bad downtime (even a year ago I faced 10 hours downtime but that was the only time). But other than that, they are good and reliable. If I remember right my plan is $8.95 per month. I can check.

From my own research when really looking at hosting companies - shared, dedicated, cloud etc - it seems that people only land on EIG companies because they don't do their own research. And by that i mean deep research on hosting related forums (webhostingtalk anyone?) where just about every host gets slammed in some way so there is very little fluff as far as reviews go.

When you do research like that just about everyone is on the same boat; if you want quality and consistency without a high chance of future crap occurring stay away from anything EIG related.

I'll say it one more time and hopefully someone doesn't directly recommend an EIG company RIGHT AFTER my post, but here are my recommendations:

Mddhost
Stablehost
Hawkhost
Veerotech
Inmotion
Site5
Arvixe

Most of those hosts have options that will accommodate 90% of people looking for hosting right now. If you need something bigger for higher traffic sites I recommend Mediatemple and LiquidWeb.

Please for the love of God do not recommend another EIG host. The main point of this thread is to find the "Best Hostgator Alternatives" so it just doesn't make sense to point out other EIG hosts since that IS the company behind Hostgator.

Oh crap (sorry). Just found out that Dreamhost is part of EIG as well. I'm seriously considering of changing the hosting company now...

Edit: Hahaa, I just fell for this April fool: http://www.dreamhost.com/dreamscape/...ational-group/

So if I'm absolutely correct, Dreamhost is NOT part of EIG. Does anybody have better info?

I've replied to your email that came in, as I didn't see this post. (wasn't on the forum)

I've asked a few questions however, it's hard to give a comparison as we're not a "budget" host per se.

Just migrated my sites to Veerotech a day ago. Sites run faster, everything went smoothly...just really sweet overall.

Unless I upgrade to cloud hosting I can't really see going any where else for my hosting for a long while. I'm on their unlimited site plan going monthly to test out the service before i pay for something long term.

Everything about them so far has been faster than my previous host, from customer support to cpanel loading etc.

I know Brent can't self promote so I'll do it for him. As far as i can tell his hosting rocks :p

This is always one big debate and you will get varied answers to this.

Mostly, the people who will suggest a hosting company, are the ones who are affiliates of that company, trying to make a quick buck from you. So, you will have to be your own judge - you will get many answers.

Be careful of who you choose.

These are not business class hosting, and I would not recommend anything like this for serious business use. If you're making money, you should really invest a bit more than $4/mo for hosting.

If you've got modest needs and you're in a bit of a luck to score a fast server, these host may work reasonably well.

Half of the ones being "recommended" are the same company! Same servers, network, datacenter & parent company. The others, when compared with posts found on other forums are just spammers link dropping.

I've used a number of different hosts over the last 9 years, including Yahoo, HostMonster (pre-EIG), WebHostingHub, SiteGround, Servint, and HostGator (after EIG takeover).

Of these, the very worst was HostGator, where I had a reseller account hosting a couple of dozen sites. The server was often down or inaccessible and 30-45 minute waits for tech support - both chat and phone. Really lousy performance from both the server and customer service and it got worse as time went by.

I also had a VPS with Servint during that same time, and in contrast to HostGator, their service was stellar, with 99%+ uptime, and quick tech support of 5-10 minutes at most.

After the infamous 10-hour service outage of Aug 2, 2013, I had enough of HostGator and switched all of my sites to Arvixe, which someone had recommended to me, and had a really good special going at the time. Since migrating to Arvixe a few months ago, I have never had any problems with the service and uptime. Tech support can be reached in a few minutes, and they are always very helpful about any problems or questions I have.

Based solely on my experience, at this time I would have to recommend Arvixe for shared hosting as my #1 choice, SiteGround for #2, and WebHostingHub #3. I've also heard that Site5 and Namecheap are good, but haven't used them so I can't say. For managed VPS, I would highly recommend Servint, as they have always been reliable and support has been good everytime I have needed it.

On the other hand, I would definitely recommend staying FAR, FAR away from any EIG owned group, which includes popular hosts such as Hostgator and HostMonster (which I have used), Bluehost (EIG owned sister to HostMonster), and a long list of others.

To be fair, I used HostMonster about 3 years ago before its sale to EIG, and performance was generally pretty good at the time. However, even back then, they started throttling accounts, and my account was terminated because I was exceeding resources on their obviously over-sold server. So much for the "unlimited" everything that they promised LOL!

I have been with Hostgator for over 6 years now. I loved them and highly recommended them.
Now all my HG hosted sites (built on WP) take 5-17 seconds to load and the HG support keeps repeating "install a cache plugin"...

- So, all of the sudden, all of my HG sites are super slow.
- Similar installation hosted on smaller hosts are fast as usual.
- I was also not able to update WP or plugins, on HG hosted sites only.
... and hostgator keeps telling me about a cache plugin.

So I did active Quick Cache for my blog - no difference. At this point HG created a support ticket (because people on chat have no clue). I have been waiting for a reply to that support ticket since yesterday...

What a great way to lose a loyal client and a loyal affiliate. Bravo, hostgator.

Since "BlueHost" and "iPage" are both owned by EIG (Endurance International Group), they are essentially sister hosts to HostGator, and therefore not good alternatives to HostGator in my opinion. Try a host that is not owned by EIG if you really want a HostGator alternative.

Crocweb is cheap but the support is limited. There is no 24 hour support. You have to file support tickets and wait until they hit you back..

I am pretty sure that's who I am thinking of.. I did get like 3 years for $56 though.. However, I had some issues with using custom WP themes and when contacting support they told me that I need to address it with WP. I don't want to hear that crap. If I buy hosting from you then you better figure it out.. Don't tell me to contact Wordpress support. I'm paying you..

With that being said... Total waste of an account.. $56 bucks I'll never get back..

Now, let me be clear that I could be wrong.. I may be thinking of HostWinds... I've had so many hosting accounts that it's hard to keep up...

My budget is same as it was with hostgator - $9.95 per month.

I got some responses on webhostingtalk.com from which i learnt that crocweb is a good alternative.

Any other?

Or should i just stick with hostgator?

Thanks,

Stick with hostgator is the worst choice

go with a reliable web host that comes highly recommended and is popular, also, make sure they have exceptional technical support. Nothing worse when you need support (no matter how small or great) - there is non or very little.

Getting a host with exceptional technical support these days is important and know what they are doing 24/7. Find a host that is always genuinely helpful to your needs. Above all, make sure the host is reliable and easy to deal with.
