For those who have tried both, which would you go for and recommend?

Catalyst as of this week is no longer being offered. The developers have shifted their focus completly to their Genisis/Dynamik product. Dynamik is Catalyst for the Genisis framework.

So, you get the best of both worlds. In my humble opinion, after a couple of years using Catalyst, this is the best solution going out there for WordPress theme development.

Thanks for the reply. So, is Genesis actually any good?

Genesis arguably sits upon the top of the heap for premium WordPress theme developers. A division of Copyblogger, these people think, eat and dream about WordPress. Studiopress, using the Genesis framework, has over 100,000 users.

Bottom line, in combination with Cobalt Apps, Dynamik child theme designer, nothing else comes close.

If you'e thinking about getting Dynamik, price is going up around first of August. So, I would pull the trigger quick. Also, Genesis 2.0 is about to be released soon.

I'm a longtime Catalyst/Dynamik user and I am not at all happy about the recent change. I've used Genesis is the past and hated it, which is why I've been building websites with Catalyst. In my opinion, the recent change that took place was a big mistake and created nothing but a mess for people who were promised lifetime updates and support for Catalyst.

I agree Catalyst was top notch, but as they say, all good things come to an end sooner or later. Eric gave everyone a generous free offer of Dynamik for Genesis and about 90% of all the functionality of Catalyst is there. So, I can't complain. Most of the sales were going towards the Genesis framework side anyway.

From a pure business point of view, it was the right thing to do. Some people are willing to ride the horse right into the ditch, in which case, everyone suffers. I expect big things with more focus on one platform.

Completely agreed. I setup all my sites on StudioPress these days. I'll definitely be picking up this plugin.

I loved Catalyst/Dynamik and am still pretty peeved Catalyst is being discontinued. That said, the features I love pretty much all fall into the Dynamik feature set so if that is all heading over to Genesis then it should remain very good.

I've just got a lot of sites to convert over in the next year which is annoying considering that I've already been through the process when Frugal was reborn as Catalyst/Dynamik.

I purchased Catalyst in the past and am looking for a way forward. Is there some sort of a discount for Catalyst owners to upgrade to Genisis/Dynamik?

Catalyst is still being supported just not upgraded with new features. There was a free upgrade to Dynamik if you were a former Catalyst owner and a discount to the Genesis Framework last month, which is off now. I believe the offer is still good for the free Dynamik upgrade. If you're looking to go in the direction of Genesis/Dynamik you can always wait for a sale by Studiopress on the Framework to get a better price or just bite the bullet and get it now. Most likely the difference will only amount to around $20 bucks.

Anyone know if there is a way to get Studiopress cheaper than the current $399?
