Anyone used AutoMail?

The sales letter makes this sound like a critical tool for emailing, to get get better open rates, and avoid gmail's promo tab.

But, I'm also nervous about hosing my own AR, which I've read comes with its own risks.

So, I'm here to ask who's used it?

Or, who can say, definitively, whether or not self-hosting an AR is a good or bad idea?

    Yes I saw this and am looking for a new autoresponder and it looks like it has ability to be a good replacement for other services.

    I reckon the Aweber crowd will be out saying never host your own, but I think much depends on the type of business and lists you have and how you look after or use them.

    It is all to easy to get a spam return if you send your list junk, however stay on the white side and I see nothing wrong with going down this route.

    I am going to try AutoMail. It is less than $10 for a single site license which is hard to beat. The developer's license OTO is $47 and the multisite license is $27. (as of this moment)

    I have also used GWA which has a free version and is very easy to configure: WordPress › [GWA] AutoResponder « WordPress Plugins

      Yes, and this is better than AutoMail, which still they want you to use MailJet, and this means you are still external. I feel comfortable with in-house.

      Haaa haaaaa, that's what they have you believe. You will find a hidden company in there they are promoting that they say is the only real way this AutoMail is going to work, and which will have you paying substantially more than Aweber and GetResponse combined. Just another scam to get your money.

      I thought the same, and got it, and then discovered the hidden "loop" they pitch at you. GWA is ALL in house and much better.

        That's not entirely fair.

        YES, it should have been pointed out in the sales letter. THAT wasn't cool.

        But, it hardly seems like a scam. They get no financial benefit from you signing up with MailJet. They're just piggybacking on their infrastructure.

        For beginners, MJ has a free plan. 6,000 emails a month. Next level is just $7.49 / month for $30,000. So, the beginner should already be making money in the free tier before they have any add'l expenses. If you're sending out 6,000 emails a month and not making any money, no A/R is going to fix that.

        I don't know what GWA is, but a comparison at this stage is also not fair. AM is in beta and has many, many features planned. I have no idea if they'll pull it off or not -- that's a different story.

        But, let's be fair in our criticisms.

        GWA also pitches a "pro" version which is $67...

        And to make ANY WP plugin work effectively you will need to use an SMTP service - that is not exclusive to AutoMail.

        Of course I guess you don't have to use an SMTP service - but the chances of inboxing are low.

    Agreed, there are pros and cons and two sides to the coin. This does look like a very clever use of SMTP and a cloud service integrating the two in WP.

I do use MemberRocket which does integrate Amazon SES (Simple Email Service) so I thought it might be a plugin that does that (just gave my idea away didn't I). But this looks to be equally a good a concept. Yes, I do have questions about SES's deliverabilty and to be honest, I would have to spend some time doing that R&D to be able to bring that idea to the table. I have a direction that I need to follow while the momentum is there so best I benefit from the fruits of somebody else's labour and need a service that will service me. Enjoy!

      So it's either a hosted solution like AWeber etc... OR try something different. Automail just might be that something different.

      Oh! BTW It does integrate Mailjet SMTP with WP which does have some pitfalls. But all that and how to overcome those pitfalls are in the tutorials. That's it from me. Hope you all make the choice that suits your business.

    I personally haven't used Automail, but there seems to be FREE solutions on the market that may be similar if not superior. Anyone heard of WYSIJA? (Wysija: a Newsletter Plugin for WordPress) It's one of my favorites and also allows for 3rd party SMTP email provider integration such as SendGrid and others.

    Can someone tell me how Automail is superior to WYSIJA which is actually actively developed and rolling out tons of new features and updates every month?

    As a WordPress developer, I see that the technical landscape is ALWAYS changing so I believe for a vital feature for any online business such as Email Autoresponders, having active developers backing up the product is a big deal.       Just checked out your list. Man... Hope you don't mind me saying so, but WYSIJA seems a little on the pricey side and I'm not totally convinced, although they look good on paper, that Sendgrid is for me. But hey thank you very much for the heads up. It is APPRECIATED!!

    I picked this up but it's not something I would promote just yet.

    The product is in extreme beta and it's not quite ready for production. I think the creator wanted to get it out there and see how popular it would be before he invested the time to polish it. With that said he does promise that there will be some major upgrades in the coming week and that it will turn into something completely different. At the moment it's a bit technical and the interface is well... glitchy.

    Several of the pieces on how to make it work are either unfinished or completely missing. For example there is a place to paste in your auto responder code when you go to build an opt-in form. But I'm not sure why you would need that when this is a self hosted platform. When I left it out, it spilled some errors I wouldn't want customers to see. However, the free bonus you get from Chris Munch was probably worth the price of admission so I'm willing to give them time to improve.

      That's so you can use AM as a backup - or vice versa - use Aweber (or other) as a backup. In that area you would post the AW optin form.

      I left that area alone with no issues.

    When you say something completely different is it going to be more advanced or more options? The price is ideal right now and I'd be willing to jump on a glitchy beta with the promise of improvements later on. On the other hand I've wasted alot of $10 on junk so it'll probably be worth the spend. LOL

    PaidAllDay, from what I recall in the sales letter, AutoMail allows you to simultaneously sign people up to AM list AND your 3rd Party AutoResponder. I think that's why there was a place for the AR code. BUT, it's supposed to be optional, so it looks like there's a bug, there.

    I'm still trying to figure out what the big benefit of this is.

    If it uses a 3rd party SMTP, we have no greater chance at getting in the InBox than with the commercial ARs. Once Google sees all these promo emails coming from AM, it will simply flag that SMTP server as promotionals and start putting all emails from there in the promo tab.

    An AR is a critical part of a marketing business, and I'm having real doubts the developers are big and stable enough to maintain AR for the long haul.

    I DID buy the $10, single license. But, I'm waffling on the $47 OTO for Dev license.

    I'm ok with the current bugs because they warned us it was in Beta (I think). $10 or even $47 is nothing if this ends up being a viable replacement for the monthly ARs. But, I still have the concerns I've mentioned and I'm less interested in risking the $47 for the Dev license until they're resolved.

There is also another plugin provider called Tribulant Software that also looks promising. I will add that the Automail site as Keith and others have mentioned is in Beta and the video training is informative. Hmmm... I do believe that 3rd party SMTP services (at least the better ones) have measures in place that boost your chances of emails being received. That is, they use their IP range to improve deliverability etc. Mailjet is one of those services. Also with the Tribulant plugin you can use GMail 's SMTP itself. Hope this helps... No doubt we are on the right track.
      EDIT: What I want is one service that does the job. SES or SMTP. Need to make a choice within the next week or two (leaning towards SMTP at this stage) I have a product to launch and I want my relationship with my clients to be served like it deserves to be served and I don't want anything to get in the way of that. After all it's not just money that's on the line... It's my reputation! If a purchaser of my product does not get their confirmation email I'll hit the roof! I'm sure you guys hear me.

        Hi, I've tried that plugin from Tribulant. It's TERRIBLE. Is not flexible at all, it's complicated and also buggy. When I contacted them about a feature they promoted on the site but doesn't work as expected, their answer was rude and denied me a refund.

        Stay away from it.

          I have used Aweber both before and after GMAIL changed its interface. I ran a campaign yesterday to promote one of my coupon sites and made twice what I made a few months ago (although my list has increased in that period by about 20%). So I did not find any harm from the new GMAIL interface (perhaps because my subscribers are looking for promotions, not sure). My only complaint is that Aweber was only affordable ($19 per month) until I hit the 10,000 subscribers mark. Now it is I think about $69 a month.

            I doubt you can draw any conclusions from that simple test. There are so many variables contributing to the results.

            I've been looking at my own behaviour regarding the Gmail tabs - and it's disconcerting...

            I actually like the tabs - because I can now easily dip in to check my mail and usually only bother with looking at the already-open Primary tab. I give that my full and regular attention. When I go to the other tabs, I do so much less frequently and with less attention. In particular, the Promotions tab, which receives the most messages, I scan least frequently and with lower attention.

            I expect people will gradually change their behaviour - as I am doing - over time, and as a result this is sure to effect open rates.

            If promoter A is getting into the Priority tab but Promoter B is languishing in the Promotions tab, and both are promoting the same product, it's almost a dead cert who is more likely to get the click, or to get it sooner.

              I would like to point out that you will not need a SMTP provider to use Automail. You will be able to send emails using your hosting account, we just advise its not the best practise for a professional business than needs to send its emails out on time.

              we are rolling out a new version of automail on tuesday so keep your eyes peeled for our notifications.

              Keith, Thank you, i did notice you understood about the system and why we are going the way we are going and nothing i said was aimed towards you in a negative light & i do agree with you that i did leave many of the features out of the software description as we didn't want to tell anyone features that they wouldn't have at time of launch. I was hoping people would be happy when they start seeing all the new features implemented that are not covered but we still need a bit more time to prove ourselves. But i am confident we can do that way before the refund period is over as i am completely confident this plugin will help many businesses with their email marketing.

      While this is always a possibility - it will be based on your own efforts as you will have a dedicated IP and MailJet has reputation monitoring so they route your emails accordingly. So they pick the IP that is best suited for your current situation. They also take care of the throttling, etc, needed to warm up a new IP address.

      Essentially MJ is doing all the grunt work we expect from AW while giving you 100% control of your list and how you manage that list.

      It's hard for a lot of people to "wrap their head around" until you actually get down into.

      In my opinion - this is a "best of both worlds" solution.

        I agree Coby... AM is in beta and when you compare the Mailjet Plugin against the AM one...well there's no comparison. Alexander states this does integrate with membership scripts such as InstaMember so he's thought things through. I say this as I have been doing my own recon since I got the email from Todd, as you can tell by my posts and frankly speaking this is a good deal. I just hope Alexander gets the site back up online soon, I want to get going.

        Please could you clarify what you mean by "they [Mailjet] pick the IP that is best suited for your current situation."

        i) Spam filter issue: If WPAutomail is actually managing sign ups, confimations, message seding, unsubscribes etc., how can Mailjet maintain the reputation of its shared IPs addresses, and so ensure maximum deliverability if theyare just providing SMTP service and don't know what is going in your list management? Or is the product very tightly integrated with Mailjet so they *do* see that thigs are bieng done right? Is the product more of an add-on to Mailjet to integrate MJ into Wordpress?

        ii) GMail "promotions" tab issue: If messages sent from WPAutomail include an unsubscribe link (as I assume they must), how is it that these are not detected by GMail and so lead to the messages going into the Promotions folder?

        iii) General issue: Even if both i) and ii) are OK, won't those clever people at Google soon find a way to detect self-hosted auto-email and start filtering it also?

        I have looked in the thread and also on the Mailjet site and am still in the dark about this. I would send these pre-purchase questions to the product creator, but there didn't seem to be any means of contacting him through the sales page.

        Sorry if I've missed something obvious here...

    has anyone been able to figure out whether WP AutoMail actually works on its own, creating an AutoResponder service hosted on your (dedicated!!) server?
    Or does it pretty much need to rely on a third party service, like MailJet?

    Just as a very basic alternative, I'd like to make you aware of this plugin:
    WordPress Automessage Plugin - WPMU DEV
    It was $9 until recently, it's now $14.

    It's not really a full self hosted AR service and won't work for most of us. But if someone here is looking for a basic autoresponder with no monthly costs, then this could be it.
    It basically add any new WordPress member to the autoresponder sequence you create.
    Not sure how you could integrate this with a squeeze page though, as it requires the user to first create an account within your WP site... !

    Sorry, I'm still not clear about this.

    i) As I understand it, the software requires the use of an external SMTP server, such as Mailjet. Unless you are willing to pay quite a high monthly fee to Mailjet, you will be using a shared IP address for outgoing messages. This sharing could be with anyone, doing anything – so its “IP reputation” could be suspect, either immediately or later. Lots of marketing messages from this IP address means that all messages have an increasing likelihood of being treated as “promotions” by Gmail. Worse than this, junk mail sent through from this IP address may tarnish the reputation to such an extent that all messages are treated as s p am - not just by Gmail, but by multiple mail providers and ISPs. This is clearly a worse outcome than the Gmail “Promotions” issue.
    Even if you are able to use your “own” (site) IP address for outgoing mail, this is most likely on shared hosting (unless you are spending a lot every month), so the IP reputation issues also apply.

    ii) I also understand that one of the factors that Gmail looks for in identifying “Promotions” is an Unsubscribe link in some shape or form. Perhaps WPAutomail mail can send out messages without this – but then how do you comply with the relevant legisalation – and no Unsubscribe link means that people may hit the “ Sp~a m” button more readily – again, a worse outcome.

    Any clarification welcome.

If Maijlet is essentially just providing SMTP service and the rest is down to the individual WPAutomail user to look after, how can the IP reputation be maintained if you are not paying a large amount for dedicated IP address in Mailjet?

    Hi everyone.
    I can consider myself a very experienced person in email marketing, as I've tested almost anything on the market, and running my own email marketing business for my own clients (my platform is not open to the public), my clients and I are sending from 1M to 4.5M emails per month.

    Here are my modest advices:
    - do not use Amazon SES until you are pretty sure that you have: very clean lists (no bounces), all contacts are really interested in your emails (double opt-in and interested readers). Amazon is very picky on this and will suspend your account without notice, putting you in real trouble.

    - if you have large lists (over 50,000 contacts) consider getting a dedicated server, because the database queries can be really long and could mess up your hosting

    - I don't know this plugin, but I'm using this on some sites or blogs, I think it's very similar to AutoMail but very mature product and excellent support: Wysija: a Newsletter Plugin for WordPress
    the reason of using this is because it integrates into your blog content and the editor is very good. You can just drag&drop your images, posts, etc... right into the newsletter editor.

    - do not, really, do not ever think of using your hosting smtp, postfix or internal mail server to send out. You'll be blacklisted in few hours. Remember that the trend now it to blacklist the domain name also, not just the IP. So, changing hosting, will not help to rise your reputation up again.

    - use an external SMTP service instead, I advice you to use mailgun.com or mailjet.com - if you're sending a lot, mailgun.com will be cheaper on the long run ($499 for 1.2 millions and just $.1 for every extra thousand). Mailjet has a slower response on support, but they are good. They also use a technology that allows you to automatically throttle the emails, improving your deliverability. I would go for mailjet if you're not a PRO, mailgun is perfect instead, if you're a developer or have one in your team.

    - if you need a professional platform for sending out on your own (but you still need an external SMTP), I would suggest interspire email marketing platform or arpreach.com. They are expensive, and if you're serious about email marketing, you should then hire a programmer or buy an extra module somewhere to add multiple sending and improve your speed.

    - whatever is the SMTP service you'll be using, be sure to sign your domain with SPF and DKIM records (they give you the right values). This is very important, as those states that you're the owner of that domain, and you're legit to send from that domain.

    That's it!

      First of all i just wanted to say thanks for checking out Automail & to let you know we are having a few #techissues. Hostgator Just informed me they are doing maintenance and that my sites will be down for a hour or so (This is not just me but many people using their service). Rest assured we will be moving over a better dedicated server very soon but dont have time to wait for the propagation to begin just yet. So please give us a bit of time to get the site back up and running.

      Now let me Explain why myself and my development team created Automail.

      Prior to the gmail tab system I had had many issues with deliverability using many of the major autoresponder networks, I looked at many different options on the market but none of them integrated with what i needed as a internet marketer, optin forms, membership system, sales pages etc. So we decided to create a system that is built from the ground up with wordpress in mind with the idea that we will be able to make it work with all major 3rd party software. Automail will be the flagship product we build our other services around.

      Then the gmail tabs system came out and we discovered that when using SMTP properly we could get all our emails into the gmail primary tab easily.
      Staying their ment we had to follow best practices to ensure our SMTP providers would send our emails with their servers that had the best rep.
      The only way to future proof this method is to get your subscribers to create conversations with you or mark your emails as important.

      We are in beta with the actual plugin and at the moment & we are only working with mailjet and in the next few days local server. We will be introducing many more SMTP services over the following weeks and many more advanced unique features that we are keeping up our sleeve for now. But we ashore you, we have tested many of the current plugins that have been mentioned and we knew their was massive room for improvement.

      I knew a lot of people would be hesitant to leave a autoreponder service, so we integrated our optin forms with them so our system can be used as a backup for your email lists incase your accounts get shut down for whatever reason.

      I will try to keep a eye on this thread if anyone has any questions, While my support desk is down i am somewhat helpless... Will be back up and running very soon..

    Could you please answer the following specific points - please excuse me if the answers seem obvious, but I only have limited knowledge of the intricacies of email authetication and delivery:

    i) To get the benefit of delivery to the Primary tab as you describe, is it necessary to have your own unique IP address - i.e. you need to subscribe to the Mailjet Silver package or above? Or will it also work correctly with Bronze and Free packages?

    ii) Spam filter issue: If it will work with Mailjet Bronze and Free versions (shared IP address), given that WPAutomail is actually managing the opt ins, confirmations, message sending, unsubscribes etc., how can Mailjet maintain the reputation of its shared IPs addresses, and so ensure maximum deliverability if they are just providing SMTP service and don't know what is happening with regard to list management? In a shared IP address environment, couldn't one 'bad' user cause problems for many other users?

    iii) GMail "promotions" tab issue: If messages sent from WPAutomail include an unsubscribe link (as I assume they must in order to comply with relevant legislation), how is it that these are not detected by GMail and so lead to the messages going into the Promotions folder?

    iv) General issue: Even if both ii) and iii) are OK, won't those clever people at Google soon find a way to detect self-hosted auto-email and start filtering it also?

      Your welcome,

      1) I have used the free account and my emails where going to the primary inbox without issue. I have expanded to silver only recently.

      2) Yes this is the case, it is up to mailjet to remove bad apples from the pie. So your domain/email reputation must be built over a period of time. If you are consistently sending out promotion offers then it will not be as easy to keep a good reputation, but if you use your SMTP to deliver your transactional emails,quality content and build a relationship with your list you will get much more value out of the service. As mailjet removes people that will give them a bad reputation i have found them to be a very stable service to use even with the shared ips, Upgrading to a dedicated ip is good once you know you have a clean list that does not bounce or unsubscribe. Using services like listwisehq.com are very good in this respect (to clean your list) Mailjet also blocks bounces from being sent etc.

      3)
      I have sent emails with unsubscribe links without issues, but i cannot say if gmail will find a way to filter these messages yet. You need to have a unsubscribe message in your email (otherwise people will hit the spam button and thats even worse), but im not sure it will be easy to tell what a unsubscribe link is,for example, "remove yourself from this receiving email from us" gmail would probably take a while to work out what that means as opposed to the traditional "unsubscribe" link. I need to check the law on this and see if its allowed as it may be a little grey hat in that respect but i want to cover as many possible routes.

      4) It is always possible for gmail to sus it out as they always change so i cant guarantee it will work forever or how long it will work for, but it is working now. Using this tecnique along with Gmails official future proof methods (getting users to star your emails or mark them as important etc) is a great way to get in theprimary inbox in the first place and get your users to keep you in their.

      5)
      The local sever config allows you to send emails from your own server, This is more for advanced marketers or people with small lists. Ideally you need your own dedicated server and a strong understanding of email setup OR a small list that you dont mind how fast the emails are delivered.

      Hey, im really sorry about not being able to contact everyone straight away, we have setup a temporary page so everyone can still download the plugin and access a few of the videos.
      We are now moving servers straight away so by monday we should be running a lot faster for everyone. ( we decided to do this while we have a temporary page up and as it is usually quieter on the weekend so we should have time to propagate before monday.

      As for the comment about us recommending mailjet and being a scam "shame on you" Its not fair to judge us so fast...

      WE chose mailjet (after a lot of research)as they have a very easy platform to utilise "even making it simple to setup spf and dkim for our customers" We wanted to provide a solution to the gmail tabs before anyone else and listing every single service would not be easy straight off the bat.

      Like bruce lee says, Perfecting one punch is better than throwing 100 different sloppy punches. or something like that ....

      So Automail is starting out by utilising mailjet, Then we branch out to all the other companies (amazon ses,sendgrid,smtp.com etc) not to mention using your own server to send emails automatically. we will be providing a lot more training very soon. and yes we are in beta at the moment but i guarantee we will have a very high end system for our members before long.

      Our development team at pressword are very strict on using clean code and will not be incorporating fancy menus and drop downs, we are focused on creating a tool that works with wordpress best practices and utilises top quality coding. So please Don't pass judgment to fast and i ensure you, you will like what you see. Remember you have 30 days to test the beta version and keep a eye on how many updates come out in that time and if your not happy or you cant see the Potential you will still be able to request a full refund.. I am very confident in the quality and the direction we are taking.

    Alexander, in case it wasn't clear, above, I was not one of the ones criticizing you for using MailJet. In fact, I defended you on that.

    BUT, I do feel you should have been much more clear in your sales letter that AM was not a stand-alone tool and that it would require a 3rd Party SMTP server which COULD have additional charges.

    That's a major thing and as someone who did buy AM, I feel I should have known this before making my decision.

    Again, I'm fine with it. It makes perfect sense. But, people should know before making a purchasing decision.

    Thanks, Alexander. I picked up the multi-site version.

    I have no idea if you'll be able to pull this off, but for the small, one time fee, I'm willing to give you a chance to amaze me!

    If I can have a reliable autoresponder w/o the monthly fees, that would be awesome. And, yeah, I know there are fees if we use a 3rd party smtp server like JetMail, but their free tier should be fine while I build up my list and start making money with it.

    Alexander, do you plan to compete with the major ARs by adding features such as

    Multiple Lists
    List Segmenting
    Auto rules for moving subscribers from one list to another (i.e. freebie list to buyer list)
    High Quality opt-in form builders
    etc

      I received two email updates since purchase...

      The last update was August 6 - visit JVzoo and go back to the download page to access it - they've added some more training vids also.

          It came with a 30 day guarantee. (image attached) I bought it on July 31st when it first came out so I am pretty sure we are all within the guarantee.

      Hello all, Well wonders never cease! I checked the members area at WP Automail again late last night and I was able to log on and it all seemed functional. I don't know what happened, if it was my computer glitch or the site was down for awhile, but I am just glad it is up again. I really did NOT want to go through the whole refund process thing. Although, from what I have read here by other Warriors I may end up doing the refund thing anyway because I bought this product to get away from monthly AR fees, Not to replace them with some other service fee!

    Looks like a new version of the plugin - 1.4 -has just been added. I am glad to know that Alexander is still around & working on the plugin, as I have not been getting any support responses by emailing him.
    I have been trying to find out about the training to avoid the gmail tabs which was mentioned in the original sales letter but does not appear in the members area.
    Should this plugin work out really well (& I so hope that it does), it would great to have access to the OTO for multisites, but for some reason, it did not & does not come up via JVZoo.
    If ur checking these Alexander, what is the best way of contacting you/support?

    P.s. Mailjet looks great but I seem to be unable to receive any activation emails from them for my account - surely, they are not having deliverability problems!!??!! - set up a new account to try again & it works this time.

    Anyone know how I can upgrade this? (I'm still at the newbie techno-nerd level)

      If you're on a VPS or dedicated server you can easily update through your WHM, Web Host Manager. Otherwise, you'll need to contact your host provider to perform the upgrade.

    It was all looking promising last week with an update & new video from ALexander, as well as a new support forum, but now it all seems to have crashed with no way to contact them & meanwhile, my website's functionality has been impaired by adding the plugin, as no emails are going out or received at all now.
    I hope that they sort this. It's really frustrating when plugins & systems are released b4 being fully tested :-(

    Yeah, that is frustrating. Just remember he was very upfront about this being a beta launch. That said, I canceled the trial before the big payment because I didn't feel it was close enough to being ready for live use.

    Gave up after 12 days of waiting for a response from the automail support team - seems like they are more interested in building Facebook pages & promoting the plugin, than fixing bugs or supporting people who have already bought the plugin.
    Being a beta product is one thing & you can expect glitches & bugs, but not actively giving any support & just giving "I will get my team to look into it" responses that never manifest into anything, isn't great at all. :-(

    What's up with this?

    There are people saying that they have new updates forums and support...

    Then others saying they cant even get a response.

    On the sales page there is no contact info... no support listed.

    Even the owner on this thread has posted a few times last year but never given any contact info.

    Does this work?

    Is it still available (looks like the salespage will still take your money)?

    Is there support?

    Does anyone have a optin form built using this?

    No it doesnt work and you will get in trouble if you use it, It loops something terrible. Some of my list got a dozen of the same messages. So not only did I get a higher spam rate as well as a unsubscribe rate, I have to pay for all the extra emails.

    Even if he comes back and says he updated it blah blah blah, stay away from it. I emailed four times in three days and still have not got a reply after a week.

    Do not invest in this crap.
