Best Hosting Provider NOT HostGator

HostGators is requiring me to send a copy of photo id or passport and a copy of my credit card. I ordered via PayPal. Seems like a phishing scam to me. Any else have a good unlimited hosting provider.

Disappointing since I had a 25% of for live coupon.

I've never had them ask that of me, and I've had a few accounts with them.

They USED to be AWESOME. But since they were bought out by the same company that owns BlueHost and a whole slew of other hosting companies, their service has slipped and their server stability has tanked. There have been several times in the past 6 months where their servers were down for as long as 13 hours, causing offline marketers all over the world to have new bungholes chewed by their clients who were losing money and leads like crazy.

Try something else- it's worth it to pay more for quality and stability.

    And yea, seems really fishy..

I use Arixe and so far so good. No problems yet. Had Hostgators for awhile until problems became to much to bare.

I agree with Jenny completely. Hostgator used to be one of the most reliable shared hosting suppliers in the biz, but they've been fairly substandard the last half a year.

My new favourite web host is bluehost.com. Never had any significant issues with them ever.

Sadly BlueHost is owned by the same company that bought up HostGator and left it to whither. They have had the same outage issues as HG more often than not, because both services have a large portion of their customers accounts on shared servers at the same data centers

I don't see a lot of people talking about FatCow, but that's who I use. I am nearly a complete novice at the technical stuff, and so far they've happily walked me through every step of the process.

Granted, I probably don't ask as much of them as some people would need to...but I have no regrets about using them.

If possible (budget wise), go for a low end VPS, you will not look back!

Suggestion: Cpanel VPS | Managed VPS | Reseller Hosting with WHMCS End User Support | ThePrimeHost.com, been with them for over 2 years now, downtime is very negligible and they have 24/7 live support for emergencies...

Couple more amazing ones are WiredTree, Hostdime...

The question is: Do you really need UNLIMITED?

I'm with MediaTemple and they are superfast. They give me 100GB of storage which I will never even be close to using up, and 1TB of bandwidth. And I believe I can just order more should I ever need it. They are also capable of dealing with traffic spikes if you're featured on the frontpage of large websites. I can't comment on that though as that has never happened to me

Grid: Shared web and cloud hosting for small business - Media Temple (no affiliate link)

Unlimited (and therefore peace of mine) comes at a price. And for most shared hosting providers that is speed and flexibility. How often do you read that a popular launch has crushed their servers? I bet with MediaTemple most of these cases could have been avoided.

(If this sounds like a sales pitch, it is because I am so happy to have found this provider )

    EDIT:

If you go for a VPS I can double the WiredTree recommendation.

Does the OP really need a VPS? Do they understand what is required with running a VPS (more advanced technical skills, keeping it up to date, etc)?

VPSes aren't for everyone. I wouldn't recommend it for less technically savvy users.

Why does it seem like a phishing scam to you, rather than seem like Hostgator wanting to take care to "know their customers" (as the financial service regulations tend to put it) by independently verifying their identities? It seems to me that hosting companies have some potential legal liability for what they display, and although their terms of service understandably require indemnities from their clients for those liabilities, they're entitled to verify their customers' identities. I've hosted there for years, now, and I'm actually pleased they do things like this (I admit that back when I first bought hosting there, all I got by way of verification was a phone call from them, rather than a request for scanned documents, but we live in changing times).

No hosting is really "unlimited". If either your storage or your traffic inconveniences their servers or their other clients, any host will be very quick indeed to bring to your attention the need to upgrade.

One thing that strikes me, about your post, is that if you deliberately choose a hosting company that takes security and client identification less seriously than Hostgator does, you may one day also discover that they take some other aspects of their service less seriously, too - and that might be unfortunate.

I've decided to leave Hostgator now having had 3 shared accounts with them for 6 or 7 years +1 vps. On the groups I go in - Superfriends for example – there are just too many complaints of bad service – deteriorating since they changed hands.

I've decided to get one good VPS from somewhere else (liquid is highly recommended and on my shortlist) and then transfer just about everything to that.

With all the small hostings is I've got scattered about the place it might even be cheaper. Maybe I can even look at reselling hosting too.

They required me to provide them with these details, too. I believe they did it because I'm from a country where credit card fraud isn't unheard of, and probably even very common. But it doesn't bother me, especially because they even tell you can you blur out your CC number, except for the last 4 digits, so they can't steal money from your CC even if they wanted to.

And how could it be a phishing scam since it came from HostGator? I mean, how big of a coincidence would it be if some scammer sent you a phishing email right after your order?

As for HG's customer service remarks, I don't know, I haven't had any problems with them. A few weeks ago I completely messed up my Wordpress website, and they were very helpful even though it was my fault. They stayed with me for more than half an our on their chat, trying to help me.

Are you SURE it is HostGator that sent you that? If it is not then yes its someone phishing, so it just delete the message.

If it IS someone phishing then this has nothing to do with HostGator so why bash HG because someone else is phishing?

Technically, Alexa is right. Even though owned by the same parent company, using the same data centers and support staff, HostGator and BlueHost operate as separate company's.

You might want to start comparing the canned responses from both hosts via their support teams - then make an educated decision on whether or not you're dealing with the same support staff. I be you'd be surprised.

Why? Knownhost and LiquidWeb are excellent VPS hosts. Yes, LW is better, (Xen vs Virtuozzo) but both are good.

Rackspace, however, is a very slow host, for shared and VPS. It's worse than Knownhost. Just Google "rackspace vps slow", or something like it, and there are tons of SERPs that show this. I've experienced it too. Stay away. They are so 1990s. Not a good host.

And again, for the upteenth time, Bluehost = Hostgator. Don't "switch" to the same company!

HG asked me for all kinds of crap. DL, extra ID, copy of my light bill, and the list goes on. I am an HG reseller, but I do not rec em any more. Actually, things went down hill after the firm got bought up. Like it is not the same company. Mostly, they are down a lot now. Yeah, and they cram servers. Well, that makes my site time out and that really sux.

Yeah, Hostgator used to be great. Now I've moved on. I'm with Arvixe now. Try them, they're pretty inexpensive-just 7 dollars per month for their cheapest plan and you can still host 6 domains under it.

They do include a free domain name, but I'd highly suggest that you get your domain somewhere else first and then change the nameservers. That way, you're domain isn't tied down. Best not to keep all your eggs in the same basket.

Well, all good things must come to an end. I once had great service with Hostgator.....No More.....

Over a year ago I moved my ecommerce site to Hostgator because of thier good reputation. During that time I experienced excellent performance and reliability that I would expect from a large hosting company. However, thier migration to a new data center has been a shockingly incompetent disaster. Yesterday (19 hours ago), at about 4:30 est my site went down and as of now is still down. Not only is that alarming but even worse, tech support informs me no one is working on the issue yet. I have called tech support three times now and no one seems to know what the problem is. Even worse I was just told they don’t know if they will be able to get my site back up??? I was also told they did NOT do a backup immediately prior to the migration… WHAT ?? SO many questions…… As a web consultant it is unfathomable that a competent “fallback” plan would NOT have been put in place for such a major migration project. I was also told they don’t know if the old server is still available. WHAT? How could you do a migration and NOT have complete access to the old server until ALL the sites have been successfully moved and tested ?? This is what you would expect from a low end, one man operation hosting service from some guys bedroom. Not Hostgator…… UNBELIEVABLE !!!

If your serious about your business and own a lot of domains, sell products and have a lot of videos on your blogs or domains I would suggest getting a dedicated server. Personally, I love the dedicated server plans with HostGator and they treat you like VIP when you move up from the shared plans.

GVO seems to be a "me too, me too" service when it comes to hosting. Personally, I find their multi level marketing scheme to be a little shady from the looks of it. I'd recommend finding a company that specializes in web hosting, not 500 different tools, plus web hosting.

I've been with them for a while now and have never had to submit ID proof of any kind. I think a lot of hosts have been doing this a lot more recently to prevent fraud. Do you have a lot of sites hosted with them perhaps?

My thoughts... Good for domain names but not so great in the hosting department. I had lots of trouble with their hosting and had to move.

I am moving to Go Daddy temporarily just to get back online, but after learning they don;t even have Cpanel will soon move . But, I need to find a REALLY Reliable hosting service. I thought I was all set with Hostgator, and was for over a year...but now realize after they sold out to EIG are spiraling down to land of the incompetents.... What a lost opportunity....

I've heard too many horror stories to consider GoDaddy. Also, I don't like the style of the guy who owns it. On top of which I find their Control Panel confusing.

Liquid Web gets a lot of good press.

JennySweets - Thank you for the confirmation that I don’t want to do business with them.
DigitalBar - Thank you for the comments
Brendan Mace - I have not seen to many good reviews of Bluehost. How long have you been with them?
Amod Oke - I am looking for a good venue to host my IM Mini Sites. I have my own co-hosted rack for the sites that I build and manage.
JanG - I will check MediaTemple out. I guess when I think "unlimited" and more concerned about the # of domains I can host.
praveenshkgp - GoDaddy is my registrar and dns provider for all my domain names. I tried their hosting and was not too fond of it.
Brian Lett - I will check out hosting source
Alexa Smith - Thank you for your opinion. I have started a dedicate file to IM wisdom presented by Alexa Smith. I really appreciate your opinion. However, with the data breaches that happen every day, I think giving them my name, address and phone # should be enough. I don’t think the need my License #, personal information like height, weight or eye color, birth date or State of Birth. They can verify me through my PayPal payment and it’s transaction id. They can do a white pages search and find my address and phone #. They can look at my IP Address and see that it is a static IP in my home state. If the servers are in the US (I assume) they are not held liable for the data on their servers that is dedicated to a customer unless someone report illegal activity on the space and they do nothing about it. I asked them for a verbal verification with a code they sent me by their choice email, voicemail, fax, text or snail mail. They refused.
“Unlimited” I think my unlimited would be the number of domains that can host as long as it had ample data transfer and moderate storage.
malcsimm - I think the common theme is they were really good until the buyout. I have seen that on several forums. My only concern is the few WSO and Plans have recommend Hostgator. That is why I wanted to use them.
Lucian Lada - Thank you for your comments. I am from the US and used PayPal. I contacted HG via phone and chat looking for an alternative to these scanned documents. They said no options and my solution provide additional sensitive data or cancel. I cancelled while I had support on the phone. I still have gotten the cancellation email or credit to my PayPal account.
jazbo - thank you for your suggestion, I will check out dreamhost.
Romeo90 - Thank you for your comment
brutecky - I contacted HG via phone and chat looking for an alternative to these scanned documents. They said no options and my solution provide additional sensitive data or cancel. I cancelled
m@tt - technically I am fine with a VPS. However, the last three programs I bought from WF recommend HostGator. They may need to change their recommendations. The overwhelming mood about HG is negative to neutral.
Linx99 - I will look at Rackspace and LiquidWeb
M@tt - That is crazy. I see older reviews of BlueHost that look very similar to HostGator today.
Graham Maddison - What do mean by "Migrating to Wordpress Engine?
seobro - I hate that your preferred hosting provider, HostGator, has done downhill. Have you been looking for a new provider? If so, which look the best?
Kingfish85 - That is crazy. I am glad you shared that with me. Now I know that I made the right decision to find another provider. Any recommendations?
JennySweets - Thank you for confirming Kingfish85 information. Who are you with now? If HG, are you planning to move your site(s) and to where?
Long Beach Nathan - You are confirming the detearation of HG once stealer value and suppot. I will look at Arvixe. With limited # of domains, that may be a good provider for test sites or mockups.
Woodusa - I will look at FatCow. Thank you for the recommendation.
nofearman - Wow! Another resounding statement of HG going downhill since the merger. Do you have a new provider you are working with?
mrfarshay - I would will look at GVO/PureLeverage. I am looking for something for my mini-sites. I do have infrastructure around my paid developed and hosted sites.
Neil Morgan - I have it on my list to look at LiquidWeb.
AZMD - Thank you for that research. I will eliminate these from my future searches.
pinkgorilla - This is the first time that I have had to provide any additional prove to get a host. I know that to get a real ssl certificate, your information has to be verifiable from a public source like Hoovers, D&B, yellow/white pages. With all the hacking that goes on, I don't want a declining vendor like HG to have more of my personal information than they need.

Yup. My exact sentiments. Never had an issue until AFTER "the email you got from them." Hopefully you will still be in business AFTER the upgrade (or downgrade... ). I think if you have standard WordPress site no big deal, but if a shopping cart (I have zen cart) , then you may be in for a rocky ride !! I received several emails the sites that were down are now up but according to the live chat guy there are some DNS errors which is a result of the DNS "propagating" and they do not guarantee that there will be no additional down time after this.

EDIT: Sites down again. No joy for today.

What I don't like is the way Hostgator handled it.

I don't recall getting a note saying "Hey, we're under new ownership."

Instead, one day when I couldn't log into my control panel, I contacted customer service. She asked what link I was using to log into my Cpanel and when I gave it it her, she responded, ""Here, try this one instead." Lo and behold, the new one worked. I can be a bit dim :p, so I didn't think much of it.

Then I, too, got the email stating a "migration process" had begun. I'm thinking, 'WTF?' - Still not putting two and two together, at this point...

And then there was the infamous DAY (or at least, better part of a day) of down time...never had this problem from Hostgator before in the past.

When I heard they had new ownership, it all made sense. I just don't like how it occurred and they should have been more forthcoming with the customers about it. I might add, this happened right around the time I paid for another 2 years' hosting with them. If only I'd known, I might have shopped around elsewhere before allowing them to be my hosting company for another two years!

That's because this is how EIG (Endurance International Group) handles acquisitions; in secret. You were apparently told "migration"...others were told "upgrade", "hardware failure" etc etc.

I did a migration out of SoftLayer the other day - went smooth & very quick. (datacenter HG used before EIG bought them)

Last night, I did a migration from their new "upgrade" datacenter - it was horrid - connection throttling, dropping etc. A customer migration that would normally take an hour tops, took 5+ hours. The servers slowed to a crawl. It literally took 5+ minutes to copy a 150MB cPanel backup file from a users home directory to the public_html directory....they're on the same disk! It should have taken seconds!

My best recommendation would be to start looking at new providers - you'll thank yourself 3-4 months from now. Pick a couple, assess their support online, compare features etc etc and then get in contact with them and ask questions.

        Yep.

What appears to be the case is that they took 2+ servers on the old network, and crammed everybody on one "upgraded" server. Even if the server was upgraded, the performance was downgraded, because it's overloaded. They're using the not-better BetterLinux OS on these boxes, which allows extreme overloading. It's EIG's wet dream. More profit!

Move to a new host. Your old HG is gone.

I prefer iPage and if the traffic demands it rent a Mac mini or a dedicated server. Is not expensive compared to the reliability and confidence you get having your own server. iPage for light to medium duty, a Mac mini or dedicated server when expecting a lot use of web apps. Just make sure the data centre is up to the task.

We actually tested some mac-mini hosting (including some cool housing to get 4 x Mac Minis to 1U of rackspace). Sadly though, we didn't get much demand from it at all.

Do you run OSX Server + Apache? Any additional control panel? What is compelling about a Mac Mini (versus spending the same on a 1u Dell R320 that will outperform it)?

You have to do that a lot of this forum for some reason.

For example, the poster just after I wrote that very same thing, says "ipage, dreamhost, bluehost". Well iPage and Bluehost are the same company (EIG), the same host. Now true, the vDeck DC is not the same as the cPanel DC, but both suck equally, and still the same folks answering tickets.

(Note Dreamhost is indeed another non-EIG host, but it's not very good, a mixed bag of reviews that are legit. There are better hosts.)

You have to keep reminding folks around here, because many seem to develop instant amnesia regarding hosting. I just don't get it. I think the "use HostGator" mentality was too prevalent for too long, and almost completely driven by the affiliate payouts. Which is ironic, of course, seeing how this should be savvy users at this site.

Same for the old "SEO hosting" myth, or the related IP-based SEO myth. Some never learn. We'll just have to keep repeating it until folks start to understand it's outdated BS from ~2003.

Sounds to me they have a reason to doubt you and you have did some less than ethical dealings on the host. I do not blame them.

I had mailware on my site once and they did that to me. Once I confirmed my identity we quickly investigated where the mail ware was coming from and found out it was a script I had built on scriptlance, the coder inserted it when he installed it.

Try to look for some affordable hosting with at least 99% uptime and with great customer support. Right now I am using iWeb for all of my websites and blogs. They are indeed reliable and fast enough to fix something.

As it was said Hostgator is no longer owned by the same company of years ago and most people promote them because they paid a $100 commission at CJ.

I've used more than 2 dozen web hosting companies, dropped most of them, right now I must use a dozen.

You don't need unlimited, that is a gimmick. The problem is on cpu usage and sql connections, not bandwith...

PM me if you need anything.

I was trying to switch from Godaddy to Hostgator.

The 20 Wordpress website hosting. Think it's called cloud hosting.

I paid over 1,300 dollars with a big coupon for 3 years of hosting. I always heard they had a great support team. I'm starting to think the only reason the have such good reviews is because most good reviews are people in there affiliate program, lol.

They made me send them a picture of my drivers license, a picture of the credit card I used with all the numbers blocked out except the last 4.

It's been 3 or 4 days now. Opened multiple tickets complaing. I only got one response and it said....." Please don't open multiple tickets"! Seriously!

I have been using LiquidWeb for over 5 years now with no issue. Switching to them was the best thing I ever did in regards to hosting.

Never had any problems and they are always on their support game.

I'm thinking of making the same switch after being loyal to hostgator for so many years.

I would like to recommend you to search a good reliable host instead of looking host with unlimited disk space because in shared hosting environment every host having there own disk space usage and resources usage limit for every single hosting account

Please let me know, your budget, so I can provide you good reliable hosting provider name.
