I used to be a HUGE fan of HostGator, but over the last year their service has really gone down hill. In order to cut costs, they've been migrating all of their servers from a datacenter managed by SoftLayer in Texas, to a new datacenter that they run in Utah, and it sucks. For work we have dedicated servers and the amount of downtime has been unacceptable. For my side projects I have a shared account and after the migration my server response time has been very slow, even noticeable in the crawl stats from Google Webmaster Tools.

Is anyone else noticing the same degradation in performance after they make you migrate? Or is it just me?

I'm currently paying $15 for my shared plan that allows me to have unlimited sites (currently have 7, but don't exceed 1k visits/day total). Can someone recommend a host that allows you to have multiple sites that has solid performance? I'm open to paying up to $30/mo. Please don't say GoDaddy.

Thank you!

I've never liked Hostgator personally. Always seemed to be a bit ghetto in terms of hardware.

Good customer service though, they certainly have that. Have you tried GVO? Very similar to hostgator but geared towards internet marketers.

I expected the worse, waiting to be moved to new servers. Actually, I was very pleasantly surprised because, if anything, my websites are now running a tad faster, so I shan't be bailing from Hostgator any time soon.

I am with Bluehost and I find the customer service a bit difficult to dealt with especially when it is about emailing. Most of the time there are issues with their servers during the weekend (I believe because they think their users do not check them at that time).

I never tried Hostgator but I think that there are great chance that I have the same issues than you with Bluehost.

Yeah, I gave up on them completely several months ago. But the best deal is their reseller accounts anyhow, because with each cpanel account you create, you get all of the "processes". I read an interview with a former employee and he said the VPS deals are rip-offs and serious website owners should ditch them and just use reseller accounts for best performance.

I recommend calling / contacting HostGator and having a good discussion on your service and the options / upgrades, etc. they have..

My company has always used HostGator's reseller plan which costs a little more but offers more features and benefits, too. And their support is top notch, too. They don't shirk returning communications or anything.

I'm not seeing those problems with hostgator. They always had random small points of down time, but for what I do I'm not too worried about that. I'm pretty sure bluehost is run by the same people. If you need more, upgrade. If that doesn't do it, leave. That's how you work with vendors. It's on their end to provide results.

The offer that's in your signature, then the site linked from the offer traces back to HG in Texas - wait until they move you to Provo, Utah - I bet it'll be a different story. That site is also ungodly slow for TTFB (time to first byte) upon initially loading the site.

How about "After" you're moved to Utah, you come back with your experiences.

I have had a reseller account with hostgator for years, just for my own websites, and I never have a problem.

I have often questioned why I chose an account that is four times the price of their standard hosting package, but after reading this thread, I guess it was a good decision.

I was with Dreamhost -- they were terrible.

I was then with hostgator for years - fantastic service. Great support.

First they changed their live chat -- it became unusable.

Then - my sites were going down loads - and having to keep emailing support was a pain.

After years of great service - I had to leave. As they'd become terrible.

I won't say who I've moved to now - as I don't want them to oversubscribed and get worse

i moved from Godaddy to Hostgator a week ago.

My site was unresponsive for 30–45 min EVERY single day. Hostgator customer service said that there wasn't any problems with the hosting.

After one week I decided to migrate my hosting to VeeroTech. Now my site response super-fast, I decreased my hosting costs and I get the best customer service I ever had from ANY hosting company.

If you have any problems with your current hosting company I strongly suggest that you try out VeeroTech. They will do the migration for you. For free

And I'm not affiliated with them anyway. Except being loyal customer

Personally i have to say that I haven't had any bad experiences with
    HostGator ever.

It's a bit of mixed bag I suppose.

Some of my students have said they ran into some minor issues
but nothing that would have any serious impact on their results.

On the whole I like them.

But with so many customers across the globe I suppose it's just
inevitable that some will experience issues along the way.

I am still using host gator, but for how long we are not so sure. Truly, the degradation in performance is an issue. Sadly, they were bought up. It is not the same company any more. Utah servers are worse. Yeah, they were not great before, but I still have some pleasant memories. Brinkster is a company we are using now. Mostly, they are good for people using dot net and micro soft type architecture, but I am happy to say that they are about the same quality that they were years ago. HG is over loading servers again. Do not expect them to improve. Just got another email warning me. They are moving servers again. Like what is going on.

Thanks all - I'm curious why the HostGator Reseller accounts are having better performance. Are they on different sets of servers, or maybe they haven't been migrated yet?

Regardless, I'll check out VeeroTech and NameCheap. I'm actually interested in any reseller of SoftLayer servers. I'm not making enough to warrant a dedicated server from them (start at $120/mo), but I'd be happy with a shared solution on their network and hardware.

I have also noticed a downturn in the quality of service (both hosting and support) provided by hostgator in recent times. This seems to coincide with the migration to the new servers and so may be a factor.

I would suggest you to get a hosting package from namecheap.com, arvixe.com or eleven2.com, these are the hosts providing good quality service and responsive technical support for your needs.

I am a hosting fanatic and tested almost all of the companies over the internet for the past 2-3 years and I found these 3 companies right now are the best and safe to host.

For me, I best vote for namecheap.com the first host for your choice to move from bluehost and eleven2.com is the second choice.

Try them out or check them out for their hosting reviews at most of the web hosting forums, they have a great number of happy customers. I personally experienced their service and was extremely impressed and happy with them.

I moved all my sites from HG over to namecheap.com and I'm happy for it.

    Yep, Hostgator is lousy.

I've covered this a number of times in this forum, and given quite a few suggestions on who to use instead.

Read some past threads on this topic:
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...s-traffic.html
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-all-down.html
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/internet...hostgator.html
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-want-out.html

    And don't use:
    - Godaddy
    - Yahoo
    - 1&1
    - Dreamhost
    - the other EIG brands, including Bluehost, Justhost, iPage, Fatcow, etc (50+)
    - amateur/"kiddie" hosts

I Googled "Hostgator sucks" cause I was wondering if anyone was experiencing what I am and that's how I found this forum. Sadly I too have to report that Hostgator sucks now. I always highly recommended them to all my customers for years, not because I was a reseller, but because their tech support was the best, and that's what I am a reseller. And, trust me, I've tried quite a few in the 18 years I've been building websites. But now, their tech support is horrendous. They have these "sale" days frequently now, and good luck getting any help on those days - even if your problem is serious as in the email doesn't work because of their server migration which I'm dealing with now. They put getting as many new clients as they can on their servers ahead of taking care of the ones they have. Hate to say it, but I won't be recommending them anymore.

I've had some downtime too with Hostgator as they've been making the changes, but I still don't plan on moving. Their 24/7 customer service/chat is awesome. I don't know how many times I've had to contact them after midnight when I've noticed something wonky on my site, or I've messed up uploading files, etc.

Let's get something straight. HostGator is NOT HostGator any longer. They were purchased, moved their data center, customer service is different, etc. etc. etc.

HostGator used to be the best, so they have a very strong brand which still confuses people into thinking it's good host. They are a terrible host now, budget host, slow service, poor support, etc. etc.

There are so many great providers out there who provide 24/7 support and a much better hosting experience. I personally switched to ServInt after the HostGator nightmare (after being with HG for 10 years). My hosting and support has been rock solid since.

Get away from HostGator, they are a joke now.

I switched to Servint too. I have had HostGator for the past two or three years (memory isn't what it used to be) Before that I had used Servint for a while but switched trying to save money and now I came to realize the old saying " You get what you paid for" is so true. Sure it cost a little more, but it does so much more.

I was hosting with hostgator for many years but when my 10 websites started generating some decent traffic, hostgator shut my blogs down. They basically just want their monthly payments without providing the service a marketer needs when generating traffic. Who cares how good the support is?...it's the service that actually matters.

No worries if you feel that way....I did a lot of searching and communicating with others and owners of hosting companies before I made my own decision. SSD has been awesome with my blog sites for the last 6 months in a few different ways. Not trying to debate with you so best of luck with hostgator
