Unbiased hosting reviews - Where to go?

by bwh1
57 replies
I'm on the fence to switch my host and I'm looking for some alternatives.

I try to stay away from EIG if possible, or I can stay where I am now, Hostmonster.

There are a few hosts I feel worth looking at

Arvixe
Namecheap
Veerotech

But I like to go over some reviews from real customers first.

Where to go as 99% what I find are affiliates with glowing reviews?

Yeh, most affiliate review sites I went to when looking for a new host seemed to be recommending hostgator! I kind of got the feeling that they were just after the affiliate income.

Darren Rowse recommended me to WpSynthesis, which is a great wordpress host if that's what your after, they are a bit more expensive mind you..

"WordPress host" is just a marketing gimmick. Every host supports WordPress.

Yes, I know, but the host I use also provides top notch security and speed..That's the main reason I use them.

I use hostgator and I find their 24/7 customer support very good!

Bluehost is also another great hosting company.

Webs is a great drag and drop website creator I've used to create a site in minutes if you are not wordpress friendly.

I know that hostgator has a new owner, but I still use them (have for YEARS), and I'm still happy with them.

Their 24/7 phone support now takes longer to arrive (as does the chat support), but they're still good, and for the price, I don't think you can beat them.

The most highly recommended alternative is a LOT more expensive. I can't think of the name right now, because after I checked out their pricing I was no longer interested... and apparently deleted it form my mental database

It's owned Copyblogger/StudioPress, and honestly not that good. Darren's advice is a bit suspect here. He's long whored their products, some of which are not good at all. Methinks that advice was paid!

No. Those are the same host. HG = Bluehost = EIG.
What part of "not EIG" did you not understand?

Unless support responds in 15 minutes, it's not amazing. That would be premium hosts like LiquidWeb or EuroVPS. If all you've ever known was cruddy Hostgator support, then you're sadly not aware of how good support can be at hosts. Because Hostgator, and now EIG -- two separate companies (the old HG is gone!) -- are really quite lousy at support. If you want another unlimited host like HG, then Site5 and Glowhost are much better.

To get reviews from real customers it is better to check out opinions in forums rather then in web hosting directories. I do not say that all web hosting directories are biased, but in the forum you have higher chance to get honest reviews.

I would start at WebHostingTalk forum. If you do not find enough reviews there, try to google for something like "company name + forum".

There are two hosting companies that I can recommend: Rackspace and Godaddy.

I can recommend them out if years of personal experience.

Rackspace is what you use for mission critical sites. Sites that either get a lot of organic traffic or sites that get thousands of dollars worth if traffic per day.

Godaddy is for everything else. You get hosting for any web site and 24 hour support per phone. That means you can at least talk to a live person right away.

Again, I do not get paid for stating this.

There are many hosting companies out there. Pick up the phone and call them. Ask questions and you will quickly see for yourself who is good and who is not that suited for your particular needs.

    BigScoots.com wins... Period.

They answer support tickets faster than HostGator can get someone on live chat to SLOWLY get around to your questions. Plus they will DO what is necessary vs. tell you what needs to get done. This is HUGE!

I've (Miles) worked for a MAJOR hosting company, I've made hundreds of affiliate sales for hosting, I am a reseller and have been for years... Our money sites receive ~100k visits/mo and we cannot tolerate downtime, slow support or slow shared hosting.

    Seriously, BigScoots.com wins.

...And friends don't let friends use GoDaddy... The owner is an endangered species, elephant killer. GoDaddy Founder & CEO is Endangered Animal Killer

If you want serious reviews from people in the industry, check out WebHostingTalk.com and be sure to search BigScoots over there... And everyone else being recommended here. Don't just take the marketers' word for it, see what the real-deal server admin nerds say!!!!

Here's my two cents, for what it's worth...

I always used GoDaddy early days and was very happy with them. Then I switched to Wordpress sites... oh my! GoDaddy seems incapable of hosting Wordpress! The sites crashed, refused to load, loaded so slowly that you'd need an appointment a week in advance to view them, etc.

I switched to Hostgator, after first trying a local company who turned out to be dreadful! My only real issue with Hostgator is that, unlike GoDaddy, you cannot phone them - you have to use their online chat, which can sometimes mean waiting half an hour for someone to turn up. And they usually do that just when you've nipped to the bathroom or to get a coffee! But apart from that, I am very happy with their up time and general capability and service.

All that said, I don't have any complex sites or anything particularly heavy running. End of the day, go where the other marketers actually go and not where they recommend on their review sites . Those are likely to be the ones with the best affiliate commissions .

StableHost and Arvixe are definitely quality hosting providers. Been with StableHost for years without any headaches. I starting using A2 Hosting for my main site running on WP a couple of months ago and have been really impressed with them.

I didn't knew this one but it seams a interesting option as it's a mid size company with enough clients to warranty quality and not too big to snooze at you if you have issues.

And looks like Warior John Tornhill has some friends in there, he's having a 10% coupon indexed from D9.

We have always used Hostgator, and have found that they are generally quite good. Their interface is very easy to navigate around, and if you want to create email accounts, install Wordpress or have multiple domain names then it is easy to get started.

Hosting really is dependant upon your needs, If you have custom programming and have a lot of traffic, there are several that would do well, you can check out web hosting talk, beware of some of the "deals" you get what you pay for most of the time.

I have been with knownhost for more than a year and they provide top notch managed servers, not as fast as I would like, but decent for the money.

If your not ready for a production service, try webhosting talk, lots of good info there.

Wait till one of your websites gets a worm or hacker. That event will eventually happen if your site gets to be high enough profile and high visitation. When your site is inaccessible for "5" days because of HG's nothing-is-urgent mentality to support, suddenly, everything you ever loved about HG will be out the window.

Thanks, stable looks interesting, the other two are new to me. Just don't want to over complicate this adding a ton of new hosts.

Nothing against namecheap, I just don't see having my hosting setup with the same service as my registrar.
Namecheap is giving me a good customer support as Domain registrar so it's only natural that I give them a chance as host too. They separate those 2 entities very much so you ain't mix them for the rest of your life.

I got a small plan a while ago with them and so far they are great. Not that the site has a lot of traffic but in respect to setup and support etc. The only downturn is that they don't transfer my account to NC as it's not on a regular cPanel.

That's my source now but as you mentioned, every host has bad reviews and good ones (name Arvixe which has a terrible one out of many good ones).

So at the end it's also a bit a decision based on my "feeling".

By now I narrowed the selection to following companies

D9 - great and super fast support, like the size of the company
A2 - very fast speed and no bad reviews around
Hawkhost - looks good, waiting for an answer from sales support
Arvixe - Personal Plus Pro plan looking good and is cheap
Veerotech - Got great help from Brent but is a bit more pricey than others as I would need a reseller plan what is not exactly my goal

I host the majority of my sites with Bluehost.

And my blog is hosted with WPengine (which is excellent, and if I could afford the $100 a month for the 10 site plan, I would move everything over to these guys).

But for the moment, Bluehost is good for 7 out of the 8 of my sites.

I'm currently at Hostmonster which is Bluehosts sister company and other than speed I have not much to complain. Just another EIG brand with the same Infrastructure as far as I know.

As I use mostly WP and believe that they overload their servers with databases I have little hope that this will get better, that's why I plan to switch.

Since they changed location it has been a slow host what hurts my sales and rankings.

I've used HostGator for years and don't have any complaints.

After going over a few of my priorities I got down to three potential Hosts. Funny that non is from my initial selection :-).

    Listed in preference...

    Site5
    A2Hosting
    D9Hosting

Site5 is at the top principally due to a free trial what let me setup my main domain first and try it (speed) before I actually decide to stay and will be billed.

A2 is simply a speed monster if you get the Prime with SSD plan.

D9 is in the ranking due to it's great support.

All are similar in pricing, around 8 bucks for a 24 month plan - unlimited domains etc.

Have not found any bad reviews from the last months back and their uptime is great. I'm between A2 and Site5 but maybe you guy's can get me some more feedback IF you used any of those 3, good or bad.

    Many thanks

Pay attention He has hostgator already and wants to switch. Suggesting HG again means you are not paying attention to what he is asking. Recommending Bluehost is still the same parent company (E&G )

With HG going down hill, the OP is looking for a quality alternative. If he switches and finds a great company. I would hope the op would share so others could follow.

If hostgator is going down hill it may be time to jump ship, before the panic sets in. Dare to be different !

Actually it's HOSTMONSTER, not Gator. Still a EIG company but today in time a really slow host, even worse than Bluehost and definitely slower than Hostgator (till when??).

I definitely will come back to share my experience if I take the plunge.

Have you decided on which host you are going to go with yet? A2 seem to have an endless number of good Reviews, I might move my web site over to A2, I am with host papa and I am ready to move on. Thanks for sharing your findings, seems you really did your research!

First to the poster right above, you should read the thread as EIG Hosts are NOT an option.

Then, I'm going with Site5 and it will be done in July. I will also remain my hosting account at Namecheap which works just fine so I have an alternative to switch fast if needed.

        Why Site5?

1 - They have a one month FREE trial - yep

Before I actually pay I can do the whole switch while I still host at my Hostmonster account and only if all works out fine I do the payment and that's it.

2 - They have great reviews all over and a few complains from a long time ago.

3 - Good price, lot's of Data centers to choose from (Internationally distributed)

5 - All I need in the account, no addons or extras

For me, A2 is the second option but I just love the Free trial option at Site5.

If I would start out totally new I might go for A2 due to their fast hosting platform.

Finally HAWKHOST has also looked very good during evaluation, just so you have another company to chose from if you want.

        Site5
        A2
        Namecheap
        D9
        Hawkhost
        Stablehost
        Veerotech
        Arvixe
        etc.

There are several good hosts out there which are not related to EIG.

Thanks for bringing to my attention EIG, I did some google research and now understand why one should steer clear of all EIG web hosts.

I really appreciate you sharing your findings, you certainly do your home work.

Good luck on your migration, Site5 looks like a good call.

          All the best

          I've been with Hostmonster.com for 7 years.

I believe they are owned by Bluehost but anyway I have never had any issues with them and I have a Membership service that I NEED to be up and running 24/7/365

Totally happy with all features, unlimited databases, websites, domains, etc. Cpanel with all the options there for you - Support is pretty

We provide HIGH PR links (ALL done manually by my own staff) every month on complete autopilot (for the Client). These are now posted from UNIQUE IP addresses. I have been using HostGator for almost 10 years and have had no problems and I get great phone support. All I can say is what ever you choose sooner or later your current hosting provider will be the bad guy and people will start recommending something else! So stick with one and hope for the best! lol

I had my blog hosted on hostgator and faced daily downtimes. So, I decided to move on with Godaddy managed wordpress hosting and its really great. Site loads very fastly and the security and support is great. My site was transferred in less than a hour.

I don't understand why you're bashing blue host and hostgator?

They're the best in business, from my experience at least.

I never hosted with them but research a bit in respect to support, speed and uptime and you will see their recent evolution.

They are part of the EIG conglomerate and simply not an option, as I can stay at my current host if I wanted that level of service.

And about GoDaddy, they could give me free hosting and I would not take it, same as domains. I can't stand their business model and culture.

And in respect to speed, they are fast but in a speed test I found online they blocked a simultaneous access from 25 people from the same IP due to a "suspicious" DDos attack rule on their shared servers.

25 visitors better you ain't have a lot of traffic if you run a site at Godaddy.

I'll keep my pre-selection the way it is.

Still have till end of July to do this, most probably netter I do it early July to change anything if I need to.

So far I've only dealt with GoDaddy and their hosting. I love how you can set up Wordpress via your online control panel with GoDaddy. It's easy and fast.
I've also heard great things about Hostgator as well. Eventhough I've never dealt with them, from the reviews and comments about Hostgator id feel safe with them aswell.

I abandoned Hostmonster during the EIG debacle, but hung on to an account at Hostgator. After some shaky days during a couple of periods it seems that they have their act together. I'm not quite ready to recommend Hostgator, but I'm no longer bashing them. I had a couple of support chats, and most of them were picked up within 15 minutes. They take about 24 hours to respond to a support ticket unless you follow it up immediately with a chat session.

I do owe you guy's an update, as promised.

As mentioned, I choose Site5 for my new hosting and the decision was a good one.

The transfer was smooth and no problems appeared, absolutely non.

Should mention that it took almost a week due to the amount of clients they have to move over, so I can't say how it is going if you need to move from one day to another, but they have an emergency department which would support you if needed.

Support is fast friendly and has somehow a personal touch. I just felt this way, don't know why. They know what they are talking about when you need an explanation.

Hosting is great, about 4x better loading speed as Hostmonster with the exact same sites on one account.

Support has been great, they respond quick and with people apparently from within the US as their English is perfect. If they have ANY support issues like control panel maintenance, they send you an email to inform you about.

Price is basically the same I pay now to what I paid before, but the product is better.

No host is perfect but you should go with one with little to no problems.

Thanks and hope you could benefit some from this post.

I think you're getting your answers right here :p

I have hear good things about blue host but I have never used them. I currently use godaddy and I have to be honest I gave had zero probably and there customer sec is ridiculously good (my exp). I haven't looked at pricing on awhile but it seems godaddy might stick it to you in year 2, but really, I haven't had a single probably with them

With regards to finding honest viewpoints, I don't think u r going to get better then all the responses here

    Arvixe
    Namecheap
    Veerotech

But I like to go over some reviews from real customers first.

Where to go as 99% what I find are affiliates with glowing reviews?

Didn't know that this thread is still going.

After the switch I host my main packages, about 20 sites, with SIte5 - great experience so far, nothing to complain.

I also host some sites with Namecheap, can recommend this one also.

Last, I signed up to ARVIXE last week for a basic plan, 5 bucks per month, as I will start an adult site (they allow this) but I can't tell anything so far about their hosting as my site is still under construction.

WP setup etc. went well, looked like a very fast server, nothing to complain so far and you get the root domain for free for life, a $15 bucks per year value.

No Bluehost or Hostgator please, clearly stated in my thread that I like to stay away from EIG.

    Cheers
