Facebook now lets users turn off notification dots for mobile app users

TechCrunch reports that Facebook will now let users turn off notifications dots for selected icons on the shortcuts bar.

Users can now remove tabs such as Marketplace, Watch, Groups, Events, Profile, Friend Requests, among others, or just mute notification dots. Facebook also confirmed this feature is rolling out to iOS users, with Android users to follow in the next few weeks.

This change is seen to improve user experience and eliminate clutter, thus alerting users with only the most important alerts.

To access the Shortcut Bar Settings options, tap and hold on any of the shortcuts in the nav bar (bottom on iOS, top on Android). A menu will pop up which will let you remove that tab, or disable red notification count overlays.

I have yet to explore this, but I see this as a great move from the embattled social media giant. I have been dealing with countless and unnecessary Facebook shenanigans I didn't want in the first place, and the app has become more of a bloatware than a necessity. Facebook after all is a social networking tool to connect with friends and relatives, not expose our data to advertisers or show us nonsense ads I have no business dealing with.
