Twitter live tests new controls on who can reply to tweets

Twitter is limited-testing a new feature which enables users to limit who can reply to tweets.

Per Twitter:

"Before you Tweet, you'll be able to choose who can reply with three options: 'Everyone' (standard Twitter, and the default setting), 'Only people you follow', or 'Only people you mention'. Tweets with the latter two settings will be labeled and the reply icon will be grayed out so that it's clear for people if they can't reply. People who can't reply will still be able to view, Retweet, Retweet with Comment, and like these Tweets."

Twitter's goal is to facilitate a healthier and more interactive tweet discussion options, while muting distractions and other voices not related to the conversation itself. And of course, it also limits abusive behaviour such as cyberbullying and tweet reply spams. Anyone can limit their replies to preference, and could theoretically reduce criticisms, particularly constructive ones, which could result in a biased tweet thread.
Even if it's still under limited testing it's interesting how this feature will be used by verified business accounts and celebrities who are both prone to flak on social media.

Chime in.
