Just business people and buyers. No jobs

  • Who would build cars and appliances - and check out groceries in a store. Who would answer the phone and make appts at the doctor's office or do clerical work or run govt offices?

If every position in a hospital was fill by a self employed person - how would that work? If teachers were self employed would they teach only things they like? If they hate history - could they skip it?

    • Robot's and software automation. They are ALREADY building cars and appliances. Wake up! Seriously. It isn't going to be long and we are going to be in big shit when 1/2 the population has no job. Wallmart, the largest employer in the US, will automate everything soon. Their biggest competitor is Amazon and they are almost fully automated.

  • As KK mentioned there are too many necessary jobs.

In order to have "no jobs" you would have to redesign and redefine the entire economic system to have everyone be an "independent labourer".

But that's just semantics and you would be looking at pretty radical, and near impossible, changes to society and its economic systems.

    • The vast majority of people aren't interested in doing anything but living in their little bubble, get a job, go to work, come home lay on the couch and watch tv.

It takes someone who thinks differently who wants (and has the courage) to venture out on their own into self employment and entrepreneurship.

We are a rare breed of people. Sure a lot of people think about, dream about it. But most will never ever take action on it.

So no, there will never be a time or point where everyone is self employed.

  • No because in schools children aren't taught to run their own business. They are taught to be employees.
  • That's impossible. When you are running big businesses you need workers. It's impossible for 1 person to build millions of iPhones for you to conviniently buy over their website. Who will run their website if the person is making the iPhones. It's 100% impossible.
  • Not possible. This world is build on and sustained by opposite forces. Joy and sorrow, rich and poor, cleaners and tycoons, justice and tyranny, good and bad, rich and the poor on and on. That is what makes this world go round. The tigers will ask...why can't all of us are tigers and be the king of the jungle. Then who is going to give them food? Also, that is why you have Heaven. Agree?
  • It would never happen as 99% of the people would rather the "security" of their job over taking any risks.

Plus us risk takers who do cross over to the no-job-needing side need people like that anyway - as Kay King eluded to

  • Being self employed doesn't take you back to the Garden of Eden.
Like being rich it also has it's disadvantages.

  • No. Everyone is not meant (nor does not want) to be a business owner. Some people are meant to be employees and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just their choice or circumstance.
  • It's possible and we would be more free, but in the world the way it is it's not possible because most people are to dependent on the welfare to be taken care of and that would prevent such a think. I would love it but most would not.

    • How exactly would we be more free if there are 0 jobs and all owners?

Owners would have to work themselves cause "hiring" is out of the question.

NO ONE is free because EVERYONE are owners...

      lol. this just gets silly...

  • I love running my own show but it's not perfect. I can see how having a job is preferable especially if one likes the job. I've had jobs I enjoy... I just happen to really enjoy building my own biz.

I know people who were self employed and made decent money but sold and got a job and don't regret it.

I happen to like being a lone wolf, but our work is fairly solitary so I can also see how people enjoy the social aspect of a job.

That said, many studies show that people are happiest with work that offers a high level autonomy. There are many jobs that people enjoy autonomy... self employment isn't the only avenue for autonomy.

Besides, after being full time in IM for a couple of years, there are times when I have to work such as a site is down and I'm running paid traffic to it. That isn't a picnic I can ignore.

From an economic perspective I don't think it's impossible. Many jobs are filled by independent contractors which could be expanded into more positions.... but of course you can call one an independent contractor but if the pay check is from one source it's really an employment relationship.

These days anyone can freelance readily, but market dynamics are such that in most cases it's advantageous to be an employee instead of a freelancer. So while it's possible in theory, it won't happen because most people will opt for security and higher income than what could be earned freelancing or running a business.
  • Yeah, it would be quite easy. Just turn all employees into independent contractors. The only thing preventing it are the IRS rules.
    • [1] reply
    • Can you point me to that rule(s)?

The reason I ask is that I have been self-employed since 1983, have owned both brick and mortar and web businesses, and
      1. I never asked the IRS if it was OK (short of applying for an EIN), but
      2. they still expected (at a minimum) monthly tax deposits, and an annual return filing.

  • Yes, but it is NOT a good idea for several reasons:

    1. Some people require leadership and management.

    2. Economy of scale is usually determined by an industry. Crowdsourcing is a potential solution to this but try to build 100.000.000 mobile phones using crowdsourcing.

    3. The highest tax revenue comes from corporations.

    4. The concept of a free market is fragile as it is now. Have seven billion people determine their own prices and fees and you would have huge fluctuations. Financial arbitration would become the norm. You would buy widget X for $100 in one part of the world and for $500 in another part, partly due to the cost of living. I assume that this reversed engineered communist system would lead to huge inflation.

    5. Some systems work better in an organized setting. Without an organized army, we would have mercenaries.

    6. Finally, this would lead to anarchy. Someone needs to answer 911.
  • It is possible theoretically but not practical nor feasible. If everyone was self-employed they still have needs. So they would procure goods and services from others (who are also self employed). So theoretically it can work.

But realistically, there must be the provision of public goods and services because the human being is complex and not every one is 'programmed' in their sub-consciousness to be pro-active and self-assured to become self-employed. In other words, in reality not everyone has the confidence nor motivation to be their own boss.
  • I lived in a poor village in East Europe and I can see everyone could be self employed. Look at Native Americans before the Spanish or English came and killed 90+ % of them, who employed them? I can be done! You call can lie all you want but it's a lie!
  • i think the main solution is not working for just money
as long jobs is based on only seeking money and mostly bad bass-worker relation more people will seek self employment
so payments should not be related to profession
lower paid workers will mostly and in realistic thinking hate higher paid bosses
  • Very interesting points. Many people are very happy with their jobs and wouldn't want it any other way.
  • Are you kidding me? Who would make my bacon, egg, and cheese croissants from the Burger King every morning?

No buyers? Lol... no money when they run out of it. How they gonna get money if they don't have a job?

It is what it is in life. Gotta be who you are in this world.
