www.mydomain.com or mydomain.com?

Hey,

On my last thread, one warrior suggested me to change my default URL from mydomain.com to
www. mydomain.com. I did just what she said.

Now when I look into it, all my links are indexed on google with the URL - mydomain.com/whatever.

One of Matt Cutts' posts (I just read) advised to keep one of them, rather than using both.

So, what do I do? Switch it back or wait for the www format get indexed.

Please Help,
Thanks.
Sumit.

The server you use should be using your domain with and without the www both if it is not maybe it is time to switch host.

No... I can have both of them. And using both the www and the non-www leads to the same site.

I was just asking which would Google prefer.

Pick either www or no www and stick with it. Or setup your sites so www and no www go to TWO different sites.

Why two different sites? Wouldn't that be confusing?

URLs with www are redundant. Or, in other words, "www.example.com" is the "www" subdomain of example.com. There is absolutely no need for WWW, in technical terms.
And yes, G. sees the the URLs as two (2) different addresses/sites!

So, stick to one - no www is simpler...

Choose one and setup a an htaccess redirect to send all the other traffic to the one you chose.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the htaccess version.

Additionally, when you're getting backlinks you should always either use the "/" at the end of your domain or not use it at all.

Example, always link to either www.mydomain.com/ or just www.mydomain.com, not both.

It is personal preference. But once you decide which way you want to go make sure you setup a 301 re-direct so that the one that you choose not to use will direct to the one you are using.

I have never heard of making two sites with them. I think that would be insanely confusing.

Google sees them differently and will count the links accordingly, so use one and stick with it. Both of them can get you to the same content, but keep all your links in the same format.

Search engines may think www.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com are two different sites. You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a "301 redirect") between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites.

Don't do it and you dilute all your efforts.
