Do You Outsource to Locals?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this topic.

Some background...

I'm fond of outsourcing. It's a necessity, really. You develop a system and, given that there exists only so many hours in a day, there comes a point where you need to find extra hands.

Here's my question: do you have experience of outsourcing in your locality? And, if so, can you provide some tips?

I have 2 locals who work for me, but I knew them before the hiring process began. I see a lot of opportunity to hire from the local populace here, but I'm wondering about the best ways to go about it: newspapers, mail drops, online. And is there a demographic that you find works out best? I'm in need of marketers, content writers, and admin. I'd prefer them to be local because the sites in question for these projects are set locally.

I don't really think think that you can get a straight answer about demographics. You can find all kinds of people with the necessary skills.

About finding them: think about this project as any other marketing project and find out where you can find them, and what are the most important things for you.

Example: when hiring a young assistant or trainee I know that usually a lot of inexperienced young people can fit the profile and choosing between them can be quite hard as they don't have much background. I had a lot of experience with unmotivated and untrustworthy people in this territory, so for a position like this I always start by posting it on Facebook. Most of the time I'm able to find someone who is a friend of one of my friends, or the child of someone in my network, etc.. The point is that you get referral info instead of background, and this usually works for me. My favourite assistant was the the girlfriend of a coworker of one of my ex schoolmates

On the other hand, if I need for example a developer, I know that they have some dedicated local sites and forums (like this one for marketers) where they hang out, so I just post my ad there, and usually I get more than enough applications.

Mike -- thank you for taking the time to form that reply. I really appreciate it. And you're probably right about the demographics. I'll add your ideas to my notes and use them for my game plan. Thanks!

If you have a local college or university, that can be a great resource for cheap talent. How to reach them? Get on the college website and find the contact information for professors of departments that you are looking for the talent in. They will know who the superstars are.
