2 weeks until redundancy. What would you do?

Right folks, being made redundant in two weeks. I know we all hate the 'what should i do to make £2000 a month' threads. So this isn't one of them.

What would you do if you were starting out today? - no ties, very little money and no specialisms.

My Background: SEO/Content/Design/CMS/Social; mostly whitehat... little to no programming, hate hard sales/scams.

I'll make the best suggestion a challenge and document it in the challenge forum.

Your input is appreciated.

I hate these sort of threads . . . little or no money, no experience, etc.

You say you're being made redundant in 2 weeks time - well that means you've got redundancy money to put into something. People can make suggestions to you till doomsday, but whether YOU are capable of doing it is another matter. On the other hand, why should someone suggest you a really unique idea on a public forum, where it can be taken by the masses and saturated in no time. I could PM you a simple way to earn 5-figures+ monthly, instantly, and without having any experience, but why should I? You should be prepared to pay for things in life and not be like the countless other daily threads on here seeking something for nothing.

Seems to me you've got some tangible skills to start off, or even to offer or seek a partnership where two sets of skills could complement each other.

Whatever you choose to do, at some stage it's going to involve a financial investment of sorts - however little or large. It's best to get your head around that fact if you want to speed up your progress and set yourself apart from the thousands of others on WF who've posted almost identical threads to this . . . and are still searching.

In your position, I would first inventory my own
      • Education
      • Skills
      • Professional training
      • Life experiences
      • Talents and inclinations
      • Connections and network
      • Passions and desires
Find something that will give you an advantage in the online marketplace. Look for something that you know or have done that others would like to experience or learn. Find something where you can be the voice of authority even if you're not a professional in that topic.

Once you've identified your specialty, do some research online in that same topic and see if you can find demand for specific education, training, or knowledge - things that you know or do well that you can use to help satisfy the demand. It may be solving a problem, satisfying a need, or simply helping others experience something they're wondering about.

Sell into that demand, whatever it is. Create a product, license a product, hire someone else to make your product, or create a service that will allow you to become an authority in the niche.

There are thousands of ways to make a living online. This is just one of them but it's one of the best ways there is. It takes advantage of things you already know and do well. You will have the edge over your prospects and many sellers that are already in the market your entering.

      The very best to you,

Steve is giving you great advice. There is no best niche, best method or best anything. Only what's best for you given your talents, skills, abilities and preferences.

The only thing I'd add is that developing a business takes time, so if you're looking for money fast, you're probably better off just finding another job. It took us about six months before we made $2,000 a month and while growth has been very fast since then, if we had been hard up for cash when we started, we never would have made it.

Hmmm ... very difficult to answer as I do not know your likes and dislikes. What do you like? I know what you presently do (by reading your post). But what does your HEART like? If you could identify that, then it would be s start.

Once identified, can you make money with it? If yes, are you an Action oriented person by nature? Can you work on your own? Or do you need someone to direct / instruct. Some people are like that you know.

If you are a self-starter, you have identified your heart's true desires, and these desires can be 'monetized', then go for it. What ever 'it' is.

Sorry I could not provide a 'do this then this would happen' type of answer. You need to do some internal reflecting and answer these and similar questions your-self.

    All the best.

    I would find a job.

In your scenario - no cash, no programming skills, and can't sell = no ability to run a business.

You need at least two of the three. Either you need programming and marketing skills to compensate for a lack of cash, or you need either programming or marketing skills + cash to spend on the one that's missing.

To answer your question bluntly if I had "no ties, very little money and no specialisms." I would start by finding out how I turned into a 14 year old again. Study a lot harder and ask out Jeanette to the prom.

Also would like to voice my view that Steve B has given some sound advice but with that said could you provide us with more detail....

    What do you like doing?

What type of methods interest you the most?

Will this be your main source of income or will you be looking for a new job?

How much money do you need to live off?

Reason for asking these personal questions is because I want to provide you with real answers and I don't find it productive use of my time if i'm giving suggestions that's no really suitable.

    regards

    Owen

If you have two hours until you are made redundant, I'd play on that when you interview for your next job.

Concentrate on getting a new job in 2 weeks, you will have a lot more results than if you did IM for 2 weeks.

IM is not for broke, desperate people.

Sorry folks, I was away from the internet for the weekend, I've read your responses this morning, some good feedback and I do genuinely appreciate the advice.

There are three main points I've taken from your answers:

    - Do something you love, I have a couple of niche sites doing 'what i love' - each of which caters to a niche too small to effectively monetize (even the biggest players won't be making much). But it's how i taught myself many aspects of digital.

-Find another job - Already on it, shouldn't be too difficult, but I'm a natural risk taker and weighing up the opportunity for a slightly reckless life decision was too hard to resist.

    - How did i turn back into a 14 year old? - best complement i've had all day!

Anyway here's my progress so far:

I've signed up a client for 6 days retainer for £600pm which covers all my fixed outgoings. (rent/bills, etc.) - I'll be doing content creation, outreach and traffic generation for them.

I'm going to split my time around that into thirds:
1/3 - trying to find similar clients
2/3 - working on 'passion projects' in bigger niches
3/3 - applying for other, more secure employment; just incase.

if it all goes wrong then look out for me selling my soul on Fiverr!

    Thanks again

You'll find better success if you have a job and do IM at the same time (at least when starting out).

People who need money quickly tend to jump from one thing to another, because it's not working as quickly as they need it too.

I think that's the most realistic outcome. I have been growing several sites gradually for the past year or two, I now will concentrate on monetising them around some (hopefully)stable income.

Become a website and domain investor, I used to make sites on a regular basis, still do but I tend to buy more than I make now. Online property is not just a business of mine but also a hobby, you just need to be careful when doing your research on sites which claim to be making money.

Always do well in depth research and ask as many questions as possible.

I know your SEO experience could help you to get started with a biz and with no start up costs

You could go here to the Classified Section and start a back linking Service where you would strategically do some very helpful Blog commenting and put your Client's back link in a passive area on the comment.

You can charge $1 per link.

Blog commenting may not be as powerful as it once was, but it can still be helpful.

That's one of the angle's i'm going down in a way, I'm collecting all the bloggers i have built relationships with, I'm going to then search through my linkedin to find other agency contacts and offer to write and post guest posts on these blogs.

Some will go direct, others will deal with me for ease, that's where the profit will be.

But i'll check out the classifieds here, see if there is anything interesting!

Thanks for your continued support; I thought I would update you guys for a second time,

I spent the morning constructing a list of PR/SEO agencies and sent out an e-mail asking if they'd like blog placements, listing the blogs I could place them onto for less due to my relationship with the bloggers.

Already two have come back and asked for a trial (at £40 profit each), with the intention of continuing into ongoing work.

    So far:
Day1 - posted for help here
Day 2 - weekend drowning sorrows
Day 3 - weekend recovering from Day 2
Day 4 - secured client on retainer, £600 a month
Day 5 - two blog trial orders, £80

    Will keep you updated here!

well, today marks 2 weeks since I posted my plea for help and suggestions, throughout the predictable negativity which results from posting a vague, aspirational enquiry there were some good pointers and reality checks so I thought I'd give you a two week update!

I have managed to secure 4 clients for SEO and general digital marketing services with a total monthly retainer fee of ~£2000, on top of ongoing blog placement pay as you go fees (another few hundred per month).
If i wanted, I could move abroad tomorrow and manage the accounts remotely, but I'm going to stay around for a while, atleast until a routine is established.

What I realised was that if someone is making money from your labour, there will likely be others who would be willing to also. I used some creative ways to seek out and secure work, but the demand was out there.

Good luck to anyone trying anything similar!
