Web Hosting Affiliate Review Site - Do they still work

Hi all,

Just a quick questions. Two weeks ago me and one of my friend were having a discussion about setting up his (my friend's) affiliate site. But he was a bit confused about what sort of affiliate product he should promote. So I suggested him why not go for a Web Hosting Review site and sell hosting as an affiliate.

I personally have no experience in web hosting niche but I can say that the commission rate is pretty attractive in this niche.

Later on I had this second thought and I asked myself; due to the humongous competition in the web hosting niche, would it be good choice to enter this niche?

So do you guys recommend that I should advice my friend to choose this niche? I mean, can he still take this business in the long run and expect to earn a decent income each month?

Since this is a topic which could be worded as "entering highly competitive market - can i make it??" I'll make my answer very specific...

As long as you can master the traffic that's half the battle in my book. Entering any market with huge competition is just about getting your offer (your site) in front of as many eye balls and possible. Just think of the competition as a good thing - everyone wants a piece of the huge revenue pie available and they want to spend as little as possible doing so.

The second half the equation is conversions, but your site layout/ structure should more or less take care of that (this really has to be nailed first before you think about traffic).

You ask "Do they still work?" to which the answer is: it depends.

Google "best shared hosting" or something similar and you'll find a load of affiliate sites using comparison tables to "compare" different hosts in terms of performance variables. So in terms of having the site and measuring potential profit web hosting can be massively profitable.

BUT...and that's a big but...you have to master your traffic generation so those nice commissions aren't over spend on gaining that traffic.

Honestly, Youtube can be a great ally here. The traffic can be strong, it's cheap and you have the great potential of ranking on google search as well.

I could also reverse this scenario and recommend to you and your friend that you both master a given traffic source (such as Youtube) THEN pick your offers. Hosting is good but since you can make videos on almost anything, most markets and offers are open to you here as well.

Since you're just an affiliate you must be a master of driving traffic (that's what the product/service creators don't want to deal with...which is why they have affiliates to drive traffic for them). Once you have that down pat you can enter just about any market regardless of competition and take your slice of the gold because you know how to funnel traffic wherever you want.

@heavysm appreciate your detailed and to-the-point response mate.

I get the picture, and not to mention the importance of targeted traffic generation. As an Internet Marketer myself, I do realize that in the online world what's more important is getting traffic and making sure that traffic converts well.

Question: you mentioned YouTube as a traffic source OR for advertising on YouTube?

Didn't get this part: "Honestly, Youtube can be a great ally here. The traffic can be strong, it's cheap and you have the great potential of ranking on google search as well."

I almost never use the advertising on Youtube lol I meant using your own videos to leverage traffic on there...meaning all free traffic. I said it's cheap because it's really free if you're smart about video creation.

I see, now I got it, thanks.

I most certainly will add it in my to-do list. Can do basic videos myself in Flash and once things starts rolling, will outsource the process.
