SEO 'STUFF' For Wordpress Blog

I just started a new wordpress blog...

And there's SO MUCH STUFF for SEO out there - is it all even necessary?

I'd like to know from YOU, what the core SEO stuff I can add to my blog to get the most results - you know the 80/20 rule.

I'm sure there's those 2 or 3 plug-ins/tweaks or whatever to do to get maximum result.

What can you suggest for me

Cheers!

    I've got a few that I wouldn't be without:

    All In One SEO Pack

THE tried and true SEO plugin for WP.

    Headspace

HeadSpace is a powerful all-in-one plugin to manage meta-data and handle a wide range of SEO tasks. With it you can tag your posts, create custom titles and descriptions that improve your page ranking, change the theme or run disabled plugins on specific pages, and a whole lot more.

    Google Site Map Generator

This is a must too - an XML site map generator that generates site maps for not only Google, but for Ask, Bing, and Yahoo as well.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Warren!

I've also heard that there are other things, not plug-ins, such as changing the ping list? permalinks? stuff actually within wordpress itself that needs to be changed?

Total wordpress noob here, help appreciated warriors!

    First things first:
    1. set up your Permalinks so that they are "custom". To do this, go to your WordPress dashboard and click "Permalinks" under the Settings category. Then select "Custom Structure" and enter this: /%category%/%postname% then click "Save Changes"
    2. Next click "Add New" under the Plugins heading and you'll be taken to a page where you can search for plugins. In the search box type in "Google" You are going to install "Google XML Sitemaps" and you are going to "activate" it and then click on it under Settings. Leave all the default settings in place until you know what you're doing . But you're going to have to build the sitemap manually the first time.
    3. The next plugin you are going to add is "All-in-One-Seo". Just type in the search box and it will come up. There's that one or from what I've been told Platinum SEO Pack is better...either will work. Install the plugin, activate it, and then go to settings and enter your blog's description and keywords.
    4. This is a trick I use that has allowed me to get first page rankings in Google for various keywords, and in some cases I've stayed there for over 2 years! The title of your posts should contain the main keywords and repeat the same keywords 2 or 3 times within your post (depending on the length of your post)
    5. Open up a Google Webmaster account
    6. Sign up for Google Analytics
these are all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure others can give you some more advice. I wish you every success with your WordPress blog
