Views on Udemy for online income

Does anyone have a view on using Udemy for generating revenue?

I am investigating it as a platform for my (currently manual) training products. There is quite a bit of work to create all the content to their standards and they seem quite fussy on the quality of what they accept - which is good.

What are the experiences of the Warriors with this platform? Many thanks.

It's a good platform altogether. In fact, it became my tertiary source of income since Udemy itself promotes products in their marketplace. It's kinda like free promotion.

However, Udemy does take a huge cut on your earnings (like having affiliates sales) especially if the traffic came from Udemy or is already enrolled/registered in Udemy.

  • Let me be the negative person here, the one BIG negative I see is there is no monthly income you can't setup your clint to pay you say $27 per month? (Am I missing something here)?

    It's horrible.

    - 80%+ of your course needs to be in video format. Might be cool for some. But it didn't make sense for my stuff. Still I had to do it.

So you can't present your stuff the way you want to. You've to have it on video - even if it actually decreases the quality of your teaching.

    - They've too much of a say on quality of content. Some control is good. But they've gone too far.

    - You sign away some of your biggest rights.

    - You're not in control of your pricing.

Want to sell your thing for $100. Sure - price it that much. But it won't matter.

They've flooded the market with coupons. People are getting my shit for cents on the dollar.

They also have promotions where EVERY course is 90% off. Just short-sighted sales that attract customers that don't even complete the courses they get for free.

One week I got a ton of people signing up. Turns out they had some promotion where mobile app users could get paid courses absolutely FREE.

    - Their own cut + affiliate cut is just too high.

    ..........

The only time it makes sense to use Udemy - is when you're offering your course for free.

Get a ton of people. Then jack the price to $999 or some strangely high number

New users will see that you've a 1000 students - for your $999 course - and go crazy.

They'll think they all paid $999 for your thing. And that will act as social proof and they'll buy your cheaper stuff.

Either flood their market with a ton of courses. Or game it.

It's not worth playing fair - since they're too shortsighted for that.

And that's the truth nobody wants to tell you.

Many thanks dabuzz. While I note the negative points you make about Udemy, I love your last point about a free course that you then up the price on - brilliant!

Well no I don't agree, dabuzz, that is not the only reason that makes sense to have a presence on Udemy. You can position yourself as an authority in your niche on Udemy I mean that makes great sense because there is so much traffic you probably would not be able to create on your own.

I know in one case a vendor setup a course that now drives traffic to his blog. Another vendor now has 6 courses that expanded from one ultra successful course he is now earning $4,000 a week. I'm not aware that he has a blog or website though.

I have quite a few Udemy courses and yes I do also have a number of completion certificates. Many of the courses I've bought some even at full price, some with a coupon. Sure it's great for the student to find such high quality even superb courses all on one platform at reasonable prices. I go there precisely because it is guaranteed high quality ( to be fair I have encountered a couple of duds too).

I can understand some of the frustration of the pricing structure for vendors as it's really out of your personal control. However remember the coupon thing only lasts at most anywhere from 24 hrs, to a week or 10 days, it does help a sudden influx of new subscribers and students. Some of the free coupons are under your control I'm given to understand by length of time available and the number given out.
I'm sure there are other warriors /marketers who have used Udemy with success for other things the above are only two that I personally know of.

P.s In answer to HelpingYouBeAnExpert you could set the price much much higher if you perceive the value to be several months worth. So $27 could be 6 months $167 well you get the idea ; I can see it might be unappealing to you. Remember for the student they would probably stop your membership fee after say 4 months, I guess it's something you would have to weigh up against the other benefits.

This is also how I feel about it. Udemy (and others) provide a great opportunity to establish yourself as an authority while recouping the investment required to produce that content. If done well, it's essentially free marketing.

Many thanks FlyingPig7, a good positive balance to the argument. Nice to hear of someone having good success at around $4k a week.
